shadow - April 16, 2009 02:19 PM (GMT)
Director of Arkansas Native Plant & Wildlife Center Tommy Young's home & property at 307 Westmoreland (off 375) was badly damaged. Since he rehabs many of the main center's (fortunately just out of the tornado's path) animals at home, he's in a world of hurt & needs help.

Greatest need is animal feed:
All Grain
Sweet Feed
Corn--both crushed & whole
Pig Feed
Dog Food
Meat & Produce

Also needs fencing

I was at Tommy's Friday evening bringing roof repair supplies from a mutual friend in HS and he got hammered!

A lot of folks don't know there's a second 'zoo' at his house for the animals that need basically hourly attention like new born fawns, ect.

He is having a hard time, nuff said.

fOLKS, It sounds like anything that could happen has happened to Tommy. He supplies a greatly needed service to this area especially after all the environmentalissues we have and the ever growing encroachment of civilization. We are losing species and animals are fast becoming endangered. Anaminals are a barometer for the environment and if we can't save them we certainly can't save ourselves! I hope that everyone will rally to the support of this worthwhile endevor.

Good gosh yes.

You all may have read he was very ill in the hospital the week before the tornado. :newlmao:

I have freinds who are cleaning out their meat freezers due to electricity going out, I'll tell them to bring it over. I also have some T-posts and fencing.

Awshoot, is Tommy's house still inhabitable?

I don't honestly know. when I was there Friday, both vehicles were, then I went back Sat I think to move the cardboard box of plastic sheeting under the carport in event of rain and Doug Fay and friend had most of it on the roof already. Again both vehicles were there, think one of the guys on the roof said Tommy was in the house, but again not sure, my hearing is poor.

I saw Tommy yesterday at the store across from the 'zoo' and he was doing a little better.

He gets a slew of fawns in every year about this time and I've helped him feed them in the past. It's quite the process, virtually takes 3 people to bottle feed one fawn, and the little rascals need fed about every 2 hours. No kidding, that's 12 times every 24 hours.

Ok, my break is over, back to town to cut wood.

I just delivered some feed out there. The correct address is 3107.... Also, Lovonda told us that their house bobcat is still missing. It's name is Simon and he weighs about 30 lbs. and has been de-clawed on all four feet. If anyone has seen Simon in the Hwy 375/Westmoreland/West Boundry Rd. area please give them a call.

Thanks for the info on the bobcat. I had gotten a bad description of him. I live in the general area and will keep an eye out for him. Is it true he will come if called?

I don't know about that but she said that he is friendly but probably freaked out. He will not come to food that you think a bobcat would want. He likes catfood mixed to suit his taste.

Good news/ Bad news.

Talked to a mutual friend of Tommy and myself today. SIMON IS HOME! Heard he only weighs about half of what he did and picked up a gun shot wound in his travels but is in good condition considering and is expected to fully recover.

Also heard another Tommy story from yet another mutual friend. As it goes, he was driving near Acorn and following a vehicle when a woman and little kid were trying to retrieve their dog from the road.

The truck w/ 2 'men' swerved off the road in an effort to actually run the dog over. He chased them down and got a beating eventually. Story I got is he lost a tooth and has some severely scraped knuckles.

Tommy will be ok, the dog didn't survive the encounter. Hope he got the license number, but haven't talked w/ him lately and this is 2nd hand info..........sounds like the Tommy I know.

A de-clawed, domesticated young bobcat ....SHOT?

This really pisses me off.

People are so................stooooopid if they can't even observe an animal and see that it is not harmful to them. That just jogged my memory, I seem to remember all those "shoot everything that comes into my yard in case it might hurt me or be a nuisance" posts I see on here sometimes......

Maybe they'll all move back to the city. :coverlaugh: One can hope.........

I see this kind of stuff all the time, people going out of their way to run over animals. I don't get it.

I see them purposely go out of their lane to run over a turtle, or a racoon, or a squirrel.

Maybe someone can explain. <_<

Are there laws that would define that as cruelty, yes? We need to put those kind of sadistic people somewhere.............

I believe we need to FEAR the goverment alot more than the critters running around arkansas IMO

wulf - May 1, 2009 11:35 PM (GMT)
Trust me, people here will shoot anything that moves thats for sure, Had a friend who raises wolf hybrids, He said he had to quit raising pups because every one he had sold had been shot.

I'm a hunter and I regret both the bob cat and the hybred wolves getting shot. In the fall, I could understand the bob cat, there's a season on them for trapping/hunting.

My guess is Simon didn't show fear of humans and may have been considered rabid. The declawing would not be readily apparent, and would make it very hard for him to hunt in the wild.

He may have been near some ones chickens too. Both incidents are a shame any way you want to cut it.

The mutual friend in HS has a bob cat also, 'Bobby/Bobbi'. Until this past year he/she had the run of the house. Now, there's a huge cage attatched to the house, I'll grab some pics next trip over there.

I've played w/ both of them, they are really neat animals. Bobby/Bobbi has a preference for chicken thighs, won't eat red meat, lol.

Unless a wolf looks like it is going to attack you, which is highly unlikely, or is attacking your livestock, which is more likely, you nwould have no reason to shoot one. If the animal is scraggly looking it might be wild but if the wolf has normal to above normal body weight , it is probably someones pet and should not be shot just for the h#LL OF IT! But I have noticed a mind-set around here that is thankfully fading away to a degree. A lot of the original families here were used to shooting darn near every thing that moved because it was either food or was a threat to food and the shoot anything that moves mentality was passed down even after there was no longer a need. I know because I come from a long line of hunters, trackers and trappers. My ancestors here lived off the land quite literaly and passed all the knowledge down. I personaly do not hunt but I have a great respect for hunters that have a respect for their surroundings. They play an important place in our eco-system.

You know, I am really impressed with the way folks around here banded together to get through the aftermath of the tornado, but the blatent animal cruelty that I hear about makes me soooo mad. I'm from up north originally, and while it happens there, too, it's not so "acceptable" to such a high percentage of residents. Hunting is one thing. Killing or hurting animals for the "fun" of it is just depraved, mean, and low class, in my opinion. It's too bad the cruelty laws weren't better enforced here. I bet putting the arrests in the paper with all the other criminals would have an immediate impact if law enforcement took it as seriously as they do traffic stops and shoplifting at Wal Mart.
