Title: Insuring older homes

Scotto - April 24, 2009 02:13 AM (GMT)
A good friend who lost his home but still has another older home, told me today that his insurance company wants to drop his coverage, as they no longer want to insure houses that are over 50 years old. <_<

Anyone else hearing this? Can't remember who his insurance carrier is at the moment.

I think that depends on your history with the ins. co. if you have ins. with a co. and buy and older home they will usually cover it. If you buy the older home and don't have ins. with a co. and want to just walk in off the street to buy ins. it may be a little harder. Thats been my experience anyway!

My residence was built in 1946. I changed insurance companies last year to keep earthquake coverage. The last company was dropping earthquake coverage in Arkansas due to increased risk. I had no trouble getting insurance.

In late 2007, I had a vacant house that was built in the late 1920s insured.

Your friend should be able to find insurance coverage.

Best Regards!

One can find insurance if they are willing to pay the higher deductible and the higher premiums. Those who live in Mena get cheaper rates because the city has a ISO rating of 4. Most all the rest of the county has a 9 rating. That's where the premiums come from. Ratings are based on a lot of things: fire plugs, fire trucks, response time, water pressure, water available and so forth. There are some structures very hard to get insured, such as log houses.
