Title: Insurance
Description: Problems
Pathfinder - May 1, 2009 11:18 PM (GMT)
Farm Bureau has been giving us A LOT of run-around and trying to get out of paying for damage caused by the tornado. Anyone else having this problem with Farm Bureau?
Focus - May 2, 2009 02:22 AM (GMT)
I was talking with some friends today whose house was destroyed, and they had Farm Bureau Insurance on the house and contents.
They were VERY unhappy with Farm Bureau, and said something to the effect that FB sure made a killing off of this tornado.
FEMA was interviewing them (my friends) today. I sure hope FEMA can help them better than FB did. :downer:

You never take the first offer the insurance co. makes. you have to negotiate(i know thats spelled wrong).
If you don't think they are being fair, you can fill out a form and send it to the insurance board in little rock. The insurance co. does not like it when you do, but it usually get them off their butts.

I didnt loose anything in the tornado but I did have storm damage a few years ago and they gave me a bad time and would not pay for the damage the wind did. Told me it was not wind damage.
I would go to the head honcho in Little Rock and complain. This adjuster in Mena is a hard nose like its his money. :box:

We cannot relate to tornado damage/coverage but we have been with FB (homeowner insurance) and have had vehicle insurance for many years. We have never had a single problem with vehicle or homeowner claims...we have had 2 separate waterdamage claims in the 9 yr. and we were treated very fairly. It depends on what kind of policy you have with what it actually pays...We have Actual cost replacement which has to replace whatever is damaged at actual cost value as opposed to the other kind of policy which depreciates...the actual cost replacement policy is somewhat higher but in my opinion, if you can afford it, its worth the higher premium when you have a claim... on both of our water damage claims, they were more than fair with us...very prompt adjuster service and very prompt payment of claims...Like I said I can not relate to the tornado claims but just wanted to tell of our experience with FB.

We Have had nothing but problems with Farm Bureau since the tornado.

I would add to Sunarab's good advice by saying communicate only in writing and cc the Arkansas Insurance Commission on all documents. This gives you an undisputable chain of events, which should expedite your claim.

We were very happy with our experience with Farm Bureau. Our vehicles and house were totaled. Of course, the vehicles depreciate, but our house went up in value and we were paid the full amount. We were also reimbursed for our outbuilding and fence and we're working on the content list now for that reimbursement. We still own the lot (and the mess on it) so we can rebuild or sell. I'm sure my experience may be better since we were dealing with an obvious total loss, but we are satisfied with our experience. Our agent has been fantastic throughout the process, as well.

FEMA and the Arkansas Insurance Dept. have both been to see what remains of our house and feel it should be totalled. The "engineer" they sent was rude and treated my elderly parents as if they were ignorant (as if they needed THAT after loosing everything to the tornado!) and said even though there was damage, they could still live in the rubble. The agents have been friendly and promise to "do what they can to make it right." But apparently their hands are tied, or they are passing the blame to the adjustors. I am wondering. Does anyone feel that Farm Bureau may be like the banks and not have the finances to pay legitimate claims?
We will be changing insurance companies. What companies seem to be upholding their policies?

I've always had good experiences with Shelter.

We have been extremely unhappy with Farm Bureau. It was their engineer who was very rude, and we have been unable to work with the adjustors they brought in to save the company money. They should pay according to their policies without hassling people who are already stressed over loosing everything they have. People should not have to argue with them to get them to do what's right--negotiating a settlement is very stressful, and can become expensive. It seems that the local people who want to do the right thing have their hands tied by others. When everyone else says property is destroyed, including local/state/federal government agencies, how can an insurance company say otherwise.

They take a gamble that people will just hang their head and take what they are given. If you have the time, fight them. It is a huge hassle and shouldn't be that way but that is the nature of the beast.
I wish the best for each of you that lost their houses and posessions. Know that you are prayed for. I know sometimes that's not alot of comfort but I do it anyway. Hang in there and don't take no for an answer.

The World Claim reps came by my house right after the tornado. Basically told me they couldn't help us since we were a total loss but gave us their info anyway. They have a website with their info -
http://www.worldclaim.net/ - and they help represent you during the whole process of dealing with your insurance company. Don't know what the cost is, and it could be atrocious but might be worth looking into.

I would be very leary of anyone who knocked at my door wanting to help especially if they want cash up front. If the Arkansas Insurance Commission can't help then I would hire my own attorney.
hymmah - May 12, 2009 05:08 AM (GMT)
I have no clue as to whether they wanted cash up front or not. They just happened to come by and I was just passing on the info. I don't know if they are a reputable company or worth looking into.

United Home Insurance Co has been giving me the run around on mine.
slingshot - May 12, 2009 06:45 PM (GMT)
One think that this is a golden opportunity for an insurance company to pick up new clients? All they would have to do is treat their customer right and the word would get around.
two dogs - May 12, 2009 07:03 PM (GMT)
It doesn't work that way sling, it would be nice if it did. The insurance co.'s are trying to get out as cheaply as they can.
sunarab - May 14, 2009 01:20 PM (GMT)
Its time to renew my homeowners and Im going to look for some other ins co besides FB. They have always been hard nosed and you never hear from agent. The policies just renew and they get their take without doing any customer service. And the adjuster acts like he is spending his own money and denys everything possible. I keep thinking if something happened to my place I dont want all the negotiations. I want what we pay dearly for COVERAGE. Thats their buisness. if it costs them they will just pass if off to the insured the following years to come.
