Title: Highway Up The Mountain
Nascarpit - July 10, 2009 12:49 AM (GMT)
Has anyone noticed between the first and second turn out that in a curve in the highway that the road looks like its sinking in and about to slide down the side of the mountain? We have been watching it for a few months and it seems to be getting just a little worse all the time.

When was the road constructed? The guard rails look antique and how did they get the locomotive up the mountain? I've always wondered.

I've been here since 1970 and that spot has always been a problem. They have hauled fill in and repaved and done all kinds of stuff trying to stop the erosion.

They have always had problems up there. There have been times when whole pieces of the road have slid down the side and the road closed or at least one lane closed for a while. Over on the OK. side you could look down and see an entire section with stripes and everything way down the side of the mountain. When that happened, they dynamited more of the mountainside and it was dirt for a little while.

Hopefully it won't give way with someone driving across it.

There is a fault at the location of the sunken road.
The modern highway was built in the 1960s but the original gravel road was much older.

Would somebody pm me if it gets bad for a motorcyclist? I come to town on my bike that way some, just not lately.
slingshot - July 19, 2009 04:25 AM (GMT)
It's not too bad yet. I went that way today on mine.

who built the road in the 60's, was it done incorrectly

I believe it was built by the Arkansas Highway Commission but the feds paid for much of it. What do you mean by "was it done incorrectly"? If you mean "was it engineered incorrectly" then no, the highway has excellent design features. If you're talking about the slide area, there is a fault there and things like that happen when you build a road over a fault. And also consider the road carries very little traffic so it's not as high a priority as, say, I-630.
