September 2, 4-7, 11-13, 18, 20, 26-27, 2009

Enjoy your stay at Arkansas’s Natural State Park this week, by attending a few of our scheduled activities. Discover the many wonderful diverse qualities of the Cossatot River by bringing your family, friends to any of our programs. All activities listed below are free and open to anyone who wants to attend. Visit with the Park Interpreters Walker and Flanary to experience the Cossatot River State Park-Natural Area first hand.

Wednesday, September 2

10:00 am Morning Stroll (30-45 min) Join Park Interpreter Flanary for this easy to moderate , 3/4-mile guided hike along the Waterleaf Trail. Feel Free to bring binoculars; who knows what we will see or stir up. Meeting Place: Waterleaf Trailhead at the Visitor Center.

2:00 pm Snorkeling Adventure (1 hour) Snorkel the Cossatot River and observe the underwater life while enjoying the clean, clear, cool water. Snorkel equipment provided. Wear appropriate clothing for swimming. Minimum age is 6. Meeting Place: Sandbar Campground Information Board.

Friday, September 4

10:00 am Who Wants to be a Park Interpreter? (1 hour) Do you know who a park interpreter is and what they do? Bring your knowledge and your family to compete against others for the title of “Cossatot River Park Interpreter Champs!” Join Park Interpreter Flanary in this fun game to discover if you can measure up to becoming a Park Interpreter. Meeting Place: Visitor Center’s Classroom.

2:00 pm Snorkeling Adventure (1 hour) Snorkel the Cossatot River and observe the underwater life while enjoying the clean, clear, cool water. Snorkel equipment provided. Wear appropriate clothing for swimming. Minimum age is 6. Meeting Place: Sandbar Campground Information Board.

Saturday, September 5

10:00 am Macro-Invertebrate Hunt (1 hour) – What creepy crawly things live in the river? Join Park Interpreter Walker to investigate these creepy crawly creatures. Meeting Place: Sandbar Campground Information Board.

2:00 pm Snorkeling Adventure (1 hour) Snorkel the Cossatot River and observe the underwater life while enjoying the clean, clear, cool water. Snorkel equipment provided. Wear appropriate clothing for swimming. Minimum age is 6. Meeting Place: Low Water Bridge below the Visitor Center.

Sunday, September 6

10:00 am Snorkeling Adventure (1 hour) Snorkel the Cossatot River and observe the underwater life while enjoying the clean, clear, cool water. Snorkel equipment provided. Wear appropriate clothing for swimming. Minimum age is 6. Meeting Place: Sandbar Campground Information Board.

2:00 pm Exploring Trees (30 – 45 min) – Have you ever taken a close up look at a tree? It’s bark? or it’s leaves? Come for an eye opening experience. Meeting Place: Visitor Center.

Monday, September 7

10:00 am Tree ID (30 – 45 min) – Join Park Interpreter Walker for this look at the many different trees in the park and how you can identify them. Meeting Place: Visitor Center.

2:00 pm Snorkeling Adventure (1 hour) Snorkel the Cossatot River and observe the underwater life while enjoying the clean, clear, cool water. Snorkel equipment provided. Wear appropriate clothing for swimming. Minimum age is 6. Meeting Place: Low Water Bridge below the Visitor Center.

Friday, September 11

10:00 am Family Scavenger Hunt (45 min) Grab your family and friends and come get your list of nature items to search for. How good are your outdoor observation skills? You will need them to complete this fun challenge! Park Interpreter Flanary will bring some sacks to gather your items in. Meeting Place: Waterleaf Trailhead at the Visitor Center.

2:00 pm Patriot Art ( 1 hour ) Join Park Interpreter Flanary and Freelance Artist Anne Haley as we investigate a creative side of art. We will discover what art is, if you have to be “good” at it, and do some hands-on activities to take home. Meeting Place: Visitor Center.

Sunday, September 13

10:00 am Exhibit Tour (30 min) Join Park Interpreter Flanary and discover the characteristic that make up Cossatot River State Park Natural Area. Enjoy the hands on experience as you travel back in time through the intriguing area. Be prepared to use a questionnaire to discover Cossatot River State Park Natural Area. Meeting Place: Exhibit Room in Visitor Center.

Sunday, September 20

Monday--Wednesday, September 21--23

6:00-9:30 pm Hunter’s Ed Classes—Anyone born after 1968 must complete an approved hunter education course before they can hunt with a firearm, crossbow, or conventional bow. The exception to this Arkansas Game and Fish Commission regulation is anyone born in 1968 or earlier, and hunters less than 16 years of age when under the direct supervision of a licensed adult at least 21 years of age. There is no charge for the class, but you must attend the entire class to complete the course. For more information about the course and to register, contact the park at (870) 385-2201.
