And.....the news media are saying that other world countries again consider the USA the #1 country in the world. :dunno:

Well.....I guess we should say, " Congratulations to Obama!"
Out of 205 candidates, he won the money and the prestige.

It appears they gave it to him because of his vision. Not that he accomplished anything, but that he wants it. Guess we should all get one. We don't have to accomplish it, we just have to want it. What is that saying to the world? We don't have to work to get a pay check we just have to say we want to work or have a vision to work.

"Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said in a citation. There's his moviestar status again.

The committee said it attached "special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons", saying he had "created a new climate in international politics". He wasn't the only one with this vision or the only one trying to accomplish it.

Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland rejected suggestions from journalists that Obama was getting the prize too early, saying it recognized what he had already done over the past year.
What did he do over the past year? Did he bring peace somewhere I didn't hear about?

So let me get this straight. To get this award now, you don't have to accomplish peace, you just have to have a vision and want it? You get this award because of your superstar status? How does that work?

BearCatFan - October 9, 2009 03:04 PM (GMT)
Kinda strange how he was nominated for the award just 2 weeks in office!!!

DNC: If you laugh at Obama’s Nobel, you side with terrorists
posted at 11:37 am on October 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Oh, and the Taliban too, which must be news to Mark Halperin, Ruth Marcus, Richard Cohen, and Ezra Klein this morning. George Bush got a lot of heat when he used the “you’re with us or against us” for the war on terror, but he specifically meant nations that had to decide whether to help us fight terrorist networks or choose to hide them or hinder justice. Politico reports that the DNC now posits that anyone ridiculing Obama is a terrorist sympathizer:

“The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists - the Taliban and Hamas this morning - in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize,” DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse told POLITICO. “Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize - an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride - unless of course you are the Republican Party.

“The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore - it’s an embarrassing label to claim,” Woodhouse said.

Even in a political environment where the two major parties send out ridiculous ding-dong reactions to events, this takes the cake. Woodhouse argues (almost assuredly uncomprehendingly) for a fuehrerprinzip where the head of state must never be questioned or criticized, lest one become a traitor to the fatherhomeland. Will Woodhouse also start labeling late-night comedians like Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien terrorist sympathizers for their (very) occasional ridicule of His Reverence? Does Janet Napolitano plan to open a file on Saturday Night Live for last week’s prescient dig?

Clearly, the DNC needs a smarter class of public-relations flacks. Given this evidence, it should not be difficult at all to find them.

Update: Did Woodhouse miss a memo? Isn’t the White House about to argue that the Taliban pose no threat to us? Twitterer VJMorton reminded me that the DNC is either a few days behind, or maybe signaling that Obama will dump that rather idiotic notion. Actually, it’s probably just Woodhouse’s own idiocy at work…

Update II: Don’t tell the DNC, but the Huffington Post has apparently sided with the terrorists:

As the world responded with a mixture of surprise and amazement to the announcement of President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize, Nobel insiders revealed that the President’s “beer summit” at the White House put him over the top. …

But, according to Ms. Valle, someone brought up the beer summit, and we all agreed that that was awesome.”

Well damn!! If all it takes is a beer summit to win a Nobel Peace prize now, I know lots of folks who'll win in the near future.

Believe it or not..Time describes it as "a prize for a promise".   Now thats funny!!!

They also said he has callouses on his lips!!!

"By now there are surely more callouses on his lips than his hands. He, like every new president, has reckoned with both the power and the danger of words, dangers that are especially great for one who wields them as skillfully as he. A promise beautifully made raises hopes especially high: we will revive the economy while we rein in our spending; we will make health care simpler, safer, cheaper, fairer. We will rid the earth of its most lethal weapons. We will turn green and clean. We will all just get along."

THis is just getting too hilarious!!!!

If I was in Norway and part of the Nobel Peace Prize team, I'd name the Chargers Superbowl champs for the 2009 season based on what they are "trying to do." Plus, it would be a slap in the face to the 2008 champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers. We all know that awards as prestigious as a Nobel Peace Prize should be given 1) for potential accomplishment (which is non existent thus far) and 2) as a slap in the face to a former president.

The_Bountiful_Beauty - October 10, 2009 03:25 AM (GMT)
In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses.”

I guess there was no one else in this world that did anything more or better then having a vision of peace. I also guess that O sent the least amount of troops? There was no reduction so pick the one that sent the least? Oh wait, wasn't there others sent sent less then 140,000? Guess my idea of abolition or reduction is wrong.

lifeisgood - October 10, 2009 03:54 AM (GMT)
I have never said anything negative about the current president (outside my home). But....this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! What has he done that he has deserved this award? How many years did it take former recipients of this award to meet the expectations of it? This man has done nothing that the former recipients have done for him to receive it! If anyone wants to say that only the repubs are offended by this then they are full of it. I agree with the others, Heck fire I know lots of folks that deserve it just in Polk County!! :banghead:

CyberianWinter - October 10, 2009 05:13 AM (GMT)
This thread is like shark-infested waters, but I will wade in anyway. What has Obama accomplished? Very little at home, but to a world that had grown terrified of what the USA had become under a string of Republican hate-monger Presidents, Obama is hope. Even if he can only deliver a small portion of what he has promised, foreigners can breathe a sigh of relief that MAYBE they won't have to send their sons here to die in a war trying to defend the world from our Rogue Government.

Where was it? Egypt, I think, where Obama told the people "I came to listen".
Ask anyone on earth: US Presidents have NEVER before gone anywhere to listen! They have always gone to threaten and demand. And when, in the entire history of the USA, has any President before Obama EVER admitted to our overthrowing a country's government? Uncle Sam never admits to his dirty dealings and never asks forgiveness. If he were a person you would have absolutely nothing to do with the arrogant slob.

Remember "freedom fries", and how the people of the USA (perhaps yourself included) suddenly hated-on-command our former friends, the French, when they refused to take part in Bush's rape of Iraq? The rest of the world remembers, and they grew to hate and fear us.

So, what has Obama done? He has mended fences. He has eaten humble pie willingly before the world was enraged enough to ram it down our throats. He has begun to set aside Bush's self-righteous judgements and replace them with dialog. He has made numerous small beginnings that can grow into a safer world for you and your family. If the Nobel Committee can see that, why can't you? Are you so hate-addicted that attempts to grow peace terrify you?

A safer world? Are you kidding me? Let's see...we have Chavez, Castro, Kim, Ortega, Putin, and Ahmadinejad all playing Obama for a fool and behaving badly. Perhaps you have noticed an uptick in terrorist activity lately in the United States? One could deduce that this is because people who clearly want to hurt Americans are aware that they most likely will not be facing the same punitive measures now that they would have just a year ago.

I am not HATE filled, as you put it. I see a man who is clearly throwing this country to a mediocre status and putting the safety and security of my future and that of my children in jeopardy. The net effect of what he is doing is eradicating American exceptionalism. Before you get your knickers in a knot, know that every country has their own brand of exceptionalism. Do not delude yourself for one second that the French, Germans, British, Japanese, Italians--you name it do not believe that their nation-state is superior. The mindset of 'nationality' came along before you or I did, so do not blame it on the "string of Republican hate monger presidents." Personally, I'd rather have a so-called "string of Republican hate monger presidents" and feel safer in my own country than one who encourages dialogue but gets (to borrow a phrase from SNL) jack squat done.

Get over the personal attacks. Don't throw something that is an ad hominem out there for all to see and not think there will be comments addressing it. Those attacks are saved for those who do not have a legitimate argument and have to end their argument with a childish comment. Clearly, the point being made here is that one of two things occured with the committee awarding Obama the prize: 1) that the award is being reduced to cheerleading or 2) it's a vote of confidence for future achievements. At this rate, all the prize has become is an endorsement for like minded pols.

Awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama is like presenting Wally Hall with the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Well on that note, maybe you could follow the trend and start awarding A's to all those students who merely declare they're going to have an A at the end of the year.

Do you think you might catch some grief for something like that, HF? :)

I mean hell, if we're (Americans) reduced to nothing more than having to talk about accomplishing something instead of all the hard work involved in actually doing it, we're lost as a Republic. <_<

But after seeing all the "talk" and a few socialist accomplishments, maybe the destruction of the Republic is the plan of this regime?

Actually, Malone...I wanted the NFL to give the Chargers their Superbowl rings for this season because they have so much potential. Maybe next year the Padres can get their World Series trophy because although they were in next to last place in the NL West, they have incredible potential and can talk a good game.

I don't understand how a person can be praised for doing so much when he really hasn't accomplished anything except fooling the people that voted for him.

Well he did accomplish these things:

Offended the Queen of England.

Praised the Marxist Daniel Ortega.

Kissed Socialist Hugo Chavez on the cheek.

Endorsed the Socialist Evo Morales of Bolivia.

Sided with Hugo Chavez and Communist Fidel Castro against Honduras.

Sent his National Defense Advisor to Europe to assure them that the US will no longer treat Israel in a special manner and they might be on their own with the Muslims.

Praised Jimmy Carter’s trip to Gaza where he sided with terrorist Hamas against Israel.

Barak Obama has managed to needlessly alienate our closest ally by botching a visit by Prime Minister Gordon Brown of the United Kingdom.

Obama’s state department violates Spain’s law and posts pics of Spain Prime Minister’s family to its Flickr page. So once again Obama offends another leader of a country thats considered one of our allies.

The French president tried unsuccessfully to meet Mr Obama before he was sworn in after the G20 summit in Washington last November, even stationing a French military plane on 24-hour standby nearby to whisk him to Chicago should the then US president-elect change his mind.... he didn't.

This is the first time since 1991 that the Dalai Lama will visit our nation's capital and not meet with the sitting president.

The newly sworn-in President opted not to appear at what should have been one of the most important Balls on his agenda that evening - The Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball.

The Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball was begun in 1953 for President Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration. The event recognized recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award. There were 48 Medal of Honor recipients in attendance, who were undoubtedly disappointed by the Commander-in-Chief's failure to show. Over the past 56 years and 14 inaugurations, no President has skipped this event - until now.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few others ... but there's the list. See, he has accomplished something. :coverlaugh:

historyfan - October 10, 2009 04:41 PM (GMT)
It is important to remember that EVERY goal Obama had set out had NOT been accomplished. Furthermore, to substantiate my point that he is causing irrepairable harm to our country, this just out in this week's National Review:

http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSF...ers_not_all.asp

There is evidence which points to the fact that Iran has been helping the Taliban in Afghanistan. This would not be a surprise since the Quds Force from Iran was actively taking part in supplying IEDs, VBIEDs, and other weaponry to terrorists in Iraq to kill American troops and Iraqis. The Karbala 5, a Quds group, was responsible for murdering American troops in Iraq. Recently, Obama Administration released those individuals. The Karbala 5 impersonated American troops and then ambushed them, killing four soldiers. For a better look at this despicable act you can read about it here: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/...1647454,00.html. Now it appears that Iran is helping in Afghanistan but our commanders are not allowed to discuss it. After all, that would be disasterous on two accounts: 1) it would belie McChrystal's request for additional troops and 2) it would tank his position that we should 'negotiate' and have 'open dialogue' with Iran.

Remember this folks: Obama actively supports NEGOTIATION with these folks. With friends like this, who the hell needs enemies?

The_Bountiful_Beauty - October 10, 2009 04:47 PM (GMT)
In the Kenyan city of Kisumu, the home province of Obama's father, radio shows interrupted broadcasting to have live phone-ins so callers could congratulate Obama on his win. Traders in the market huddled around hand-held radios and touts shouted the news from the windows of local minibuses.

"When I heard it on the radio I said Hallelujah!" said 65-year-old James Andaro. "It's God's blessing. This win is for Africa."

The peace prize was created partly to encourage ongoing peace efforts, but Obama's efforts are at far earlier stages than those of past winners, and the committee acknowledged they may not bear fruit at all.
"If everything goes wrong, then one cannot say that this was because of Barack Obama," Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said. "It could be that it is because of us, all the others, that didn't respond."

So even if he doesn't do what he says he is going to do, it is not his fault and he still deserves the award?

The secretive committee declined to say who nominated Obama. In Nobel tradition, nominations are kept secret for 50 years, unless those making the submissions go public about their picks. This year's nominations included Colombian activist Piedad Cordoba, Afghan woman's rights activist Simi Samar and Denis Mukwege, a physician in war-torn Congo who opened a clinic to help rape victims.

Guess their actions couldn't trump O's vision.

This just in...
ESPN just announced that Obama has received his invitation to the Downtown Athletic Club in New York for this year's Heisman Trophy presentation. Others expected to receive invitations are: University of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, University of Florida quarterback, Tim Tebow, and Notre Dame quarterback, Jimmy Claussen. The three quarterbacks, however, will actually have to finish this season's games before an invitation is received. Texas coach, Mack Brown said, "While Colt would attend, Obama is clearly the favorite in this year's race. Still, it's an honor for Colt and the University of Texas, just to be in the running."

With the forces lined up as they now are against any future of the USA, Obama's end sinking is likely to wet the footsies of everybody on board.

Talked to a few recently who also believe he should have turned down the award. They say he hasn't come anywhere near what he said he was going to do. He was to start pulling the troops, nope, sent 140,000 more. Close GITMO, nope not happened. He is even following Bush's regime in alot of areas. Hhhmmm. So it isn't just the pubs upset about this.
