Title: Posting A Picture
Description: Help on how to post an image

I love MJNet - May 28, 2006 10:10 PM (GMT)
Here on this board, you have the option to post a picture in a post.

Please also ensure you read the thread about posting etiquette - Found here:

Posting Images Etiquette Thread

Now you want to put in a picture.

So you click on the reply button and see the following.

Now you want to add a picture (as I have done). What do you do?

You need to click on the IMG button:

And you get a pop up asking you for the URL.

If you don't know what the URL is or how to get this you can do it one of two ways.
First look in the address bar at the top of your browser.
Otherwise, right click over the image you want, look at Properties and there you should see the URL listed.

It should now look something like this:

Now click okay - and when you have finished, click your submit reply button as you would normally.

You should now have a picture posted.

If you don't it is often because of 2 main reasons.

First the URL isn't correct - Often the .gif, .jpeg .jpg gets left out or some other mistake.
Always check that first.
The other most common reason is that the picture is in a location that doesn't allow you to link from.
Check you have a permission to link from that location.

Hope this helps folks :)

Here is some additional help. I typed it out for a board member who PM'd me for help (Hollah!) and I thought that it might help others. Let me know if anything needs clarifying.

If I want to upload photos, I use http://www.imageshack.us/

The easiest way to use it would probably be to click browse and find the file on your computer. Under that there is an option to resize, this can be helpful if the photo is too big. Check the box, use the drop down menu to choose the size.

Then click "host it!" at the bottom.

You will get this info:

There are 3 options now... you can post the thumbnail like this:

To post the thumbnail, copy/paste the code for "Thumbnail for forums (1)". (This board is the 1st type of forum) This is good because on the board it's small, but people can can click to see it bigger.

The second option is to use their link, "Hotlink for forums (1)". You will get this:

Copy/paste the code here exactly as it is. This gives the full size photo and when you click it, it's a link to the image shack website. Free advertising for them... nothing wrong with that since they give us this free service but I find it annoying.

That's why I use option 3, giving just the photo with no links or anything.

Copy/paste the code at the bottom called "Direct link to image". Paste it here, with [IMG ] [/IMG ] on either side (without the spaces, like the quote code).

Play around with it, let me know if you have any questions.

nzbadgirl:

I'm not having any success with this. I keep getting an error message: 'Sorry, dynamic pages in the [IMG] tags are not allowed.' Pictures are not an area that I have much skill with so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I would like to add sig pic under my name of Nikki and Helen. What am I doing wrong?

ekny - January 5, 2008 04:16 AM (GMT)
Hi Marymartin,

Have you checked to make sure a) your pic is in one of the formats the board will accept, and b ) that it's under any specified size-limit? --e

How do I do that? Sorry to be so stupid about this. I've managed to get it in the email but not as a sig pic.

Image size shouldn't matter if you're linking to an image hosted on photoshack, or photobucket, or any of those.

Can you paste in exactly what you're trying to post in your sig when you get that error message you mentioned? That will help narrow down the problem.

The image is in my pictures file on my hard drive. I tried to follow the instructions on the imageshack site and upload it to transfer but that's when I got the error message.

Thanks everyone for your help. I finally have concluded that the type of file I was trying to upload wouldn't allow me to use it as an avator -- so I went with another option. I really love that picture of Simone and Mandanna though.

Nope, it isn't the file type. When you uploaded from your PC, possibly it was the file size that it objected to - the shrink to size option doesn't always work. It needs to be less than 150 x 150 pixels. Try the piccie below if you like (i.e. right click or whatever to save to your PC hard disk then upload directly) .....

Going through photobucket/tinypic etc, I think the avatar option requires a URL code NOT the IMG code that you normally use for pictures. Sounds like you were pasting the IMG code. Try pasting http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=8erw4tk&s=1 if you don't want to do the above.

WARNING: you may find problems when changing your avatar as other people seem to have! If it doesn't work first time then try the 'Delete Cookies' link at the bottom of the main index screen then maybe reboot your PC and try again.

Thanks everyone for all your help with this. I'm going to work on learning how to downsize my pictures so I can get this avatar thing down. :hug2

Download Irfanview. It's free, stable, ubiquitous & very easy to use.

Go to the Image menu / select "resize/resample".

Remember to "save-AS" (not Save), so you don't change the original shot. That's it. After you've downloaded it'll take you half a minute, totally painless. --e

Yes, you're right, but also, just for other people in general, as an FYI (not only marymartin, that is! :) )... I've never used any kind of image-hosting for anything I've uploaded here--to a board thread OR for avatars. You can simply upload them directly from your desktop. :) I am going to do it now, in fact, to show the area in "My Controls" under "Avatar" that lets you do it. Voila!

True, but then they display as attachments at the end of a message, rather than as full images WITHIN a message. If you want an image to display fully within your message, then you have to upload it to a photo hosting site and then paste in the URL of the image location.
