Title: S4+ on Channel 5
Description: Starts May 2?
abzug - April 19, 2007 09:38 PM (GMT)
Or so they say on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Girls_%28TV_series%29This is weird, right? I mean, S3 on ITV3 won't be finished, and they'll be starting broadcasting S4 on another channel. They're not making it easy for viewers to have continuity are they?

Thanks abzug,
I checked the listings for Five Life ... and yes it's definite that S4 is starting on 2nd May ... and no they haven't doubled up episodes for S3 either.
Guess Five Life are hoping to get viewers that are already hooked on S3 but if you ask me they'd probably get more after the S3 cliffhanger. Or maybe they miscalculated when ITV3 was going to finish.
I really hate it when they do this sort of thing .... :cry2

That is odd that they're starting S4 before S3 finishes. Not great for any first-time viewers.

Oh my, I wish they could start showing it here... Not bloody happening though, as far as I can tell.

Mad Maggot, I thought you were American! But then I looked at your profile. How did you discover the show all the way in Russia?
PS Your English is super-good.
Mad Maggot - April 20, 2007 05:01 PM (GMT)
Thanks, dear. :D
I think my brain could very well be American or British -- I speak English better than my native language. Most of the time.
And since we mentioned languages, I wanted to ask you if your nickname has anything to do with the German word Abzug? Or could it be a tribute/homage to Bella Abzug?
I think I discovered Bad Girls via some article I read back in December or around that time. I got interested when I read Afterellen interviews just before the show started airing on Logo and, as I stated in some other topic, the idea of a TV show about women in prison didn't really sound very captivating to me, but I gave in and started watching it. Needless to say, I don't regret a second of it. :)
(ETA: When I say I "started watching it", I don't mean Logo.. obviously. The credit goes to Larkhall Projector Room, YouTube and torrents.)
Actually, your site also contributed (very much so) to my BG addiction (to put it mildly). When I started reading S1-S3 recaps, I couldn't stop myself. I ended up reading all of them in a time span of about 30 hours. Next week I read all available essays. Currently re-reading.

It's a tribute to Bella Abzug, who is a real hero of mine. Why, what does the word mean in German?

Wow, yay! I'm so glad! We're working on more content, so hopefully there will be new stuff to read soon.

Well, it's a polysemantic word. I haven't consulted the dictionary, but I'm guessing it has around ten meanings. The three that come to mind at the moment are trigger (n.), retreat (n.) and dues/duty. Its derivative (abzueglich) means with except for/apart from.
I'm a linguist.. as you probably can tell... Tsk. Duh.
Anyway, can't wait to read the new material on your site once you guys update it! :)

So then it's an absolutely perfect name for Bella Abzug! :)
Cassandra - April 20, 2007 08:33 PM (GMT)
Ah .... so that's why you're called abzug. I hadn't made the connection.
Am I right in thinking Bella Abzug had some Russian sounding middle name ..... Straviskay or something like that? Were her grandparents Russian?
abzug - April 20, 2007 09:10 PM (GMT)
Her parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants. (I had to go look it up to verify!) I'm having a hell of a time finding her maiden name though. In our day and age, it would be everywhere, but I guess in the 1960s and 1970s, it wasn't as common for women to include it after they changed to their husband's name.
ETA: Phew! I found it! Her maiden name was "Savitzky"--you were VERY close Cassandra!
Cassandra - April 20, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
Thanks. Stupid me! I didn't even think of trying to look it up myself (brain is a bit overworked today)!
Is it common in the US then to add your maiden name as a middle name? Or is that peculiar to the 1960's/70's? (And maybe I shouldn't be asking you this here as I'm kinda digressing a bit?)

It's not uncommon. Hilary (Rodham) Clinton did it after Bill Clinton won his first presidential election. (I think she used her maiden name entirely for a long time until it became a political liability for Bill. Which always made me think she left it out as a middle name in deference to his ambitions and then added it back as soon as she could.) My mother kept her maiden name as her middle name. :) And actually, my middle name is my mother's maiden name, which is NOT common anywhere that I've heard of. My sister (gosh, this is a really scientific sample isn't it?) dropped her maiden name and kept her original middle name, which happens to be my grandmother's maiden name (my father's mother's). Strange, eh? Most of my friends have kept their maiden names when they've gotten married, so I have no idea what the current trend is.
I guess in the 1970s and 1980s hyphenation was popular, where the wife would hyphenate her maiden name with her husband's and then she and the kids (but usually not the husband) would have crazy last names. My brother-in-law, who is a teacher, said whenever he saw a kid with a hyphenated last name, he knew that kid was going to be a nutjob. Sad, no? But it leads to this weird situation because what happens with the kid who already has a hyphenated last name, and then wants to get married? You could have a four-hyphenate last name!!!

Yes I agree, although I think it's sad when people have to change their image solely to further their politics.
To be honest I'm not entirely sure what the trend is over here either. My mother’s middle name was her mother's maiden name but the rest of my family have Christian names. I think the trend may have been the maiden name of a family member from a previous generation but not necessarily your mothers. Nowadays a safe alternative is frequently chosen, especially when a Christian name is flamboyant or exotic. Ironically your mother’s maiden name is often used as a security question for banks and credit card companies (but luckily not mine). It always seems a really stupid question as I'm sure it's fairly easy to find out (particularly if you have your mother's maiden name as a middle name)! Duh! :o
Historically in the UK it used to be quite upper class and pretentious to have what we call a ‘double-barrelled’ (hyphenated) surname. Now it’s occasionally found among the masses (but often still seen as pretentious). However in other countries (e.g. Spain), I think it is more commonplace.

:rofl Yep! Crazy isn't it! And not to mention the four middle names that the kid already has! Just have to hope then that the price of the wedding invites isn't influenced by the word count!!

I have just resurfaced after my BG S4 binge, which I've discovered at a local video store. This is just short of a miracle 'cause we only have up to S3 on DVD in SA. If you want more, you have to import.
Having never seen S4 before, I must say that I've quite enjoyed it. Well, once I've made peace with the fact that there really will be no H&N in it (except for H's voice in one ep), I enjoyed it. Up to a point the series was much more light hearted than the previous 3. The ep in which Denny had to "bag" Al was just plain hilarious! I thoroughly enjoyed Neil chasing after Fenner, all the confusion with the wing governor(s), and of course the canteen scheme.
Sorry to say, but for me the Roisin and Cassie love story never got up to speed, I never felt emotionally involved with them as I did with H&N. The dynamics between them lacked some depth, they didn't grab my attention and in the end I just couldn't give a toss whether they got back together or not. At one point I just couldn't stand Roisin's whining anymore. I felt like I wanted to grab her by the shoulders, shake her and yell "get a grib, woman!" When she did turn around in the end, it was if it was too little too late.

Hey, microsofty, we have a S4 thread where more discussion has (will) take place. I haven't watched it in ages, but a lack of knowledge has never prevented me from offering an opinion. Check it out:
