Title: Which Countries Broadcast Bad Girls?
Description: At all? Through season 7?

abzug - May 31, 2006 03:17 PM (GMT)
Some of the chatter going on in the BBC-America thread has led me to wonder which countries have actually continued to broadcast Bad Girls through season 7. I know we have posters from the UK (obviously) and New Zealand who have gotten to see season 7 on television. Are there any other countries which have broadcast all the seasons of the show? I know Canada, Australia, and the US haven't, but I don't know about South Africa or any of the other countries which have licensed the show at various times.

Here in Belgium they only showed Series 1&2 and then they stopped showing it because the ratings weren't meeting expactations. Which was their own fault because they only showed it on Tuesday evening 11 p.m. I just went completely mad when they stopped showing it!! Still getting angry when I think off it :angry1 :angry1 :angry1

Yeh, I don't get BBCAmerica where I live....so I don't even know if it's around in the US....I mean 1-7...good question ! In France we did....but I was only there for the first series of the show, then I moved here...so...yeah.

Hi, Here in Canada, BG Series 1-4 was aired at least 3 times but again at odd times, the last being at 12pm(noon). The french version (Series 1-6) was also repeated a few times, the last being at 9am! What puzzles me is that outside the UK, the other countries had low the ratings. I wonder why is that? I found BG one of the best TV shows I've seen. I mean what are we seeing that others are failing to see.

I would count the low ratings as having to do with the time slot. I never saw it on BBC America at all, although I have read that they aired S1. They advertise like mad for their other shows but never BG.

Also, you said in Canada it was on at 9am. Well here in the States, 9am is the morning talk shows. *If* anyone is home and watching tv they are probably watching Regis & Kelly or one of the other shows then. It seems a bit early in the day for a drama.

They haven't showed it at all in Holland. Which is a same since it is such a good show!

I know here in Canada, Showcase aired up through the end of series 4, or possibly 5, and then would go back to repeat, but I think on repeats they only aired 1-4. Showcase DIVA may have aired newer stuff, but since I don't have digital cable (where DIVA is), I couldn't tell you.

So I have series 1-7 on dvd (all Region 2).

To date, Australian TV has never broadcast beyond Series 3. At the moment Foxtel (cable/paytv) is re-playing Series 1. They are up to Ep 7 - "Playing with Fire."

I've just perused the BBCAMERICA website, seems they're putting Series 1 back on in Sept 6. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm going to post this here and in the BG on BBC-A thread. I checked the site and indeed, it appears that they are broadcasting the first five eps of S1 on BBC-A beginning Sep 6 through Sep 8. At our favorite night owl timeslot of 3 am. Thanks BBC-A! :clap

It doesn't look like they are continuing to broadcast the remaining eps the following weeks, because I think they show the schedule at least two weeks in advance, so they'd be showing eps for the subsequent weeks if they were going to be on the schedule. But we can continue to keep an eye out:

Maybe you or someone who understands tv can explain it to me, but I can't help but feel massively cynical about this: what the hell are they doing putting half a show they've already aired in this timeslot on again? It's not like MASH reruns where the sequence doesn't really matter. They've scheduled half a dozen eps over 3 days and... then what? This sounds to me like they're treating the show as filler, plain & simple. At 3am I doubt they care a whole lot about ratings, of any type. They're maybe obliged to put it in reruns a few times, or maybe contractually can't air past a certain series bec Shed sold the rights to a US version, who knows. The point is... this is ridiculous, no? (I know the obvious reply is... yeah, but maybe it'll still find its intended audience despite all this, but that's not BBC-A's intention, I'm trying to understand what is!)

Yes, exactly. However, wouldn't it be ironic if they started broadcasting it every weekday at 3 am as filler and it built up a cult following? Talk about democracy in action.

I knew I could count on you for a resolutely sunny reply. Damn, you're good. And in this rain, too. ;)

Well...if we could just figure out exactly how to make it so.

Anyone got any scathingly brilliant suggestions?

Other than writing to the usual suspects (TV Guide included) to point out the significance of this show, draw the odious comparison to the L Word, wonder at the injustice of the way BBC-A is showing it, and demand something better than the relegation to mere cult status.

Any of you guys write to the Museum of Broadcasting?

abzug - August 29, 2006 08:07 PM (GMT)
I think a better bet is to keep things grassroots. Post on all the lesbian-tv-media-related message boards. Reach the fans where they are, rather than relying on those in power to decide whether to publicize or not....

Jeanna - August 29, 2006 08:19 PM (GMT)
I really do believe that serious consideration from the Museum of Broadcasting would be a very cool thing, and, besides, it's something that should've happened already, if it hasn't. This series should be on their radar even tho it's british. They will run entire retrospectives of significant series or important episodes at the museum and garner more or less scholarly interest and further wider ranging media interest which would get the word out to a larger audience as the fanbase for this show has always been inclusive of more than a lesbian viewership. If it's ratings points they want to see at BBC-A they'd like to see that wider demographic.

abzug - August 29, 2006 09:59 PM (GMT)
So, do you know anyone there? I actually used to be a member, back when they did the Sondheim retrospective and I was there every week or so. They did a great ongoing "exhibit" on the depiction of gays on television, although I don't think it included BG (or any British series, but I could be wrong about that--since I wouldn't have known BG from Adam at the time). But then I decided it was sad that in a great city like New York, the only museum I was a member of was one where I would go to just sit and watch tv. There's something deeply pathetic about that.

Jeanna - August 29, 2006 10:22 PM (GMT)
Oh dear...something else we have in common. <G>

I was a member of MOMA too...but that was sitting in the basement and watching films all day. Slight diff. :)

Actually, while I was perambulating around the block with Walter I was thinking...who do/did I know that might know someone at the museum (didn't they change the name to the Museum of TV and Radio or is that just the one in Beverly Hills and are they affiliated?)

They did change the name to the Museum of Television and Radio, and there are two branches, one in LA and one in NYC, just a few blocks down my street. If we talk about this much longer, I might actually renew my membership... ;)

Yes we did in France, in cable network, which means BG is quite unknown to the French audience. They broadcast it again these days, I just saw "Back from the brink" last week and I must confess the french version (voices) of the characters are disastrous. No DVD are available here, except from the UK, so no french subtitles. I wish I could convert some friends to BG but it seems hopeless... user posted image

Just in case someone was still interested: BG Series 1-8 was aired in South Africa on m-net. Some series' (not sure which, might have been all) were also aired on the Series Channel, both of which is part of our satellite TV network.

Series 4 premiered on UKTV (Aus) about 3 months ago, though I think it finished a couple of weeks ago. It was also unedited.
