A Glimpse of Time by Candlelight

A/N: One night the power was off and my favourite pastime was stopped by batteries that died. I had one thing to do to amuse myself. This short story is my musings by candle and moonlight.

Having just arrived home, Nikki immediately walks into the bedroom. She pauses at the door and looks at the bed; only to find Helen all curled up in bed with a book. She smiles tenderly to herself and continues towards Helen. When she reaches the bed she crawls over to Helen’s side and while standing on her hands and knees over Helen she says “I’ve missed you, today!” As she says this Nikki snuggles into Helen’s neck and feels the vibrations of Helen’s voice when she replies “Oh, you have, have you?” Nikki smiles, this seems too have become their greeting of late, so she replies “Yes, I have.”

Nikki, still on her hands and knees over Helen, who has now turned onto her back, looks at Helen’s eyes and softly says, “I’ve missed these”, as she reaches down and softly kisses both of Helen’s eyes. Nikki pulls back and pans her attention to Helen’s nose, saying, “I’ve missed this one too”, and again she reaches down and kisses Helen’s nose tenderly. From there Nikki slowly moves to Helen’s mouth, as she does so she says, “But most of all I’ve missed this…”, as she continues to kiss Helen passionately on the mouth.

After they break off the kiss, Helen looks at Nikki and says, “Oh, I love you! Come here!”, and with that she pulls Nikki off balance and kisses her again. They linger in each others arms for a while, after which Nikki reaches over to where Helen has placed her book to have a look at the title. There is a bit of bemusement on her face when the title registers. Helen is reading Oranges are not the only fruit by Jeanette Winterson. She makes her bemusement known to Helen when she says, “You do know that it is a bit too late to be reading this now. It would have been so much more helpful if you read it when I originally recommended it to you.”

Helen, who has been watching Nikki all the while, smiles at her and replies, “Yeah, well I was looking for something to read while I was waiting for you”, and then very teasingly added, “I happened to find it in the bookshelf and I did always wondered about it…”

Nikki smiles back at Helen as she slowly gets off the bed and starts undressing to get ready for bed. Helen continues in her teasing way, “I never got around to reading it then, I was so preoccupied by other things you know.”

Nikki gives Helen a smile of recognition about ‘the other things’ she is talking about. They gaze at each other with so much love. Nikki is the first to break the gaze as she turns around to the bathroom to brush her teeth and finish getting ready for bed. As Nikki walks back to the bed she says, “Oh, I nearly forgot, Trisha and Alexandra sends their love.”

Helen smiles and thinks out loud, “How are those two?” Nikki slips under the duvet and feels the coldness on her side of the bed so she moves closer to Helen’s side. As she is doing so she continues to talk, “Well, it seems as if Alex has plucked up the nerve… She showed me the ring tonight. I think she’s going to ask Trisha next weekend when they’re in Spain.” Helen smiles sincerely after hearing this and replies, “I’m sure Trisha is going to be ecstatic.” Nikki moves in closer for a cuddle and Helen moves instinctively to receive it. Nikki is silent for a while and then says “Yeah, I’m so happy for the both of them.”

She reaches over and kisses Helen in the middle of her back very lovingly. Helen grins at the feeling of Nikki’s lips on her back and takes both of Nikki’s hands and places them on her very pregnant belly. Nikki cradles her belly for a while and then turns Helen on her back. She then moves closer to Helen’s belly and softly kisses it, in an almost a whisper she says, “I’ve missed you too”. She kisses Helen’s belly again and then says, “Aunty Trish asked about you today”, and with that she kisses Helen’s belly again, but this time on her belly button. Looking on, Helen is grinning at Nikki, who returns her gaze but with a proud glint in her eyes. Nikki then continues, “I showed them the picture of Peanut. Alex off course couldn’t resist teasing me about getting soft and Trisha just said that she can’t wait to be an Aunt.”

Helen smiles at Nikki while she replies in her very teasing way, “You’re going to wear that Sonogram picture out soon enough!” Nikki mockingly looks horrified at this remark and answers, “I’ve made a copy! Besides, the original is safely in your scrapbook… and anyway I get to have a new one in a couple of week’s time!” Nikki resists the urge to stick her tongue out at Helen, so instead she reaches for Helen and kisses her on the forehead.

Helen smiles knowingly. She takes this moment to say, “Nikki, your mum phoned this afternoon.” Helen hesitates a bit when she sees no reaction from Nikki, but then continues, “She wanted to know if they could come and visit us this weekend?” Again Helen pauses before she continues, “I told her I need to hear from you if you can get away from the club, before I can give her an answer.” Helen waits for a reaction and is surprised when there is none. She moves her head so she can look Nikki in the eye and as she does so, she finds Nikki close to tears.

Helen knows what this means to Nikki and gives her the time to process her thoughts. It has been a very bumpy road since her parents got into contact with them after Nikki’s release and Helen knows that this is a big step for all of them. Helen silently awaits Nikki’s response while stroking her hair.

Nikki realises that she has been quiet for what seems to be an eternity. She reaches for Helen’s face with both hands and tearfully kisses her softly, several times. When she breaks off the last kiss she says softly and absentmindedly, “this is perfect.” She then continues to be silent for a while. Helen silently looks on, knowing that there is nothing she can say to Nikki at this moment. Helen hears Nikki softly whispers “just in time”, and is puzzled as she asks Nikki, “Just in time?”

Nikki realises that she said it out loud and smiles at Helen. She moves down to Helen’s belly and cradles it with both hands, kissing her belly while whispering, “She’ll know her grandparents.”

And with that Helen instinctively knows that Nikki has made peace with her parents at last and that she is ready for the relationship that they desire. Helen pulls Nikki towards her and wipes away her tears with several kisses.
