Found these through google alerts. These are interviews up on You Tube with Mandana, Simone and the rest from the South Africa trip.

Thanks so much for those never seen them before.

What I like most about this piece is that they take the subject matter very seriously, unlike the press in the UK. The prison issues, the lesbian storyline etc. Nothing is shied away from, either by emphasizing other storylines or characters (the way the UK press focused on Debra Stephenson and Claire King), or by undermining something serious by dismissing it as camp. In fact, now that I think about it, this "camp" label was just another way the UK press preserved the invisibility of lesbians and women in prison, the very invisibility Bad Girls was trying to counteract.

Did anyone else find the camera work self-consciously arty? With the close-ups on the actors' eyes, the viewing them through the camera's screen, like twice-mediated, etc.

Oh, and one other random thought: Lara is actually quite beautiful! I don't think I've ever seen her with makeup and her hair done before. It was kind of striking, actually.

solitasolano - July 5, 2007 03:26 PM (GMT)
Yep, abzug, that closeupvideo monitor giant eye thing was pretty tacky...plus that hand held style is so overused badly as in this case. Just wish the sound wasn't so reverbytoo...hard to hear and listen to at points.
The British media news sounds much like the local news here in LA...celebrity tv news masquerading as tv promos for shows on whatever station you're watching...In this case, SA features might inherently have more substance and/or they don't know who Claire King is as opposed to the apparent "stars" of the show ..Lahbib and Jones, who actually showed up in person to promote the series...
Thanks invisicoll for linking this new material.

Thanks for the link! I wasn't a fan when BG first aired in SA (no satellite access), so it was good to see material from the "archives". :)

The Afrikaans introduction, translated: "M-Net [which doesn't make sense, I'm sure Ms Landman meant to say "Bad Girls"] has a world-wide following for a number of reasons..."

I just loved Joe's description of working with so many women! So true, so funny.

Oh, and as for the camera work: Carte Blanche just loves dramatising their inserts and they do this through their camera angles.

ekny - July 5, 2007 04:50 PM (GMT)
Despite the visual style being totally irritating (and instantly carbon-dating itself), I was of course delighted to see new stuff from that era. Microsofty, it was my impression "M-net" was the name of some kind of satellite or tv network/company there who was hosting the show, no??

Can someone tell me what SL mumbles right at the start of the vid, it's just too blurry for me to hear? Thanks! :)

That is exactly right, ekny. M-net is the local TV channel (on satellite) that aired all 8 series' of BG. I've listened to the introduction more than once and it really sounds as if Ruda Landman is saying "M-net has a worldwide following...", which really confused me, because why would a local TV channel have a worldwide following? Therefore I assumed she meant to say BG. It's either that or I need to go for a hearing test!

Ah. Thanks. But erm... I meant: what is Simone saying?! :D (right at the very very start, I mean)

"Mumble-mumble... here's a few clues."
After numerous listenings, my brain decided it should be: "Should we tell them who we are? Here's a few clues..." (This would make sense if the preview clip was done specifically for the insert, not?)

liusi444 - July 5, 2007 09:44 PM (GMT)
Never seen them before.Thanks!

You shouldn't have to register to watch these videos. When you click on the link above, the video doesn't start automatically? Do you use a dial-up connection? And do you get an error message or anything?

If you mean download to save the video on your hard drive, that's a completely separate ball of wax.

liverpoolkiss - July 6, 2007 12:17 AM (GMT)
No, not to save, but have tried clicking everything on the webpage, and nothing works (can't watch video) I have dial-up.
Thanks

invisicoll - July 6, 2007 02:22 AM (GMT)
liverpoolkiss, I sent you an email with some information.

liverpoolkiss - July 7, 2007 01:39 AM (GMT)
That download worked. Thanks again for your help, invisicoll.

Lisa289 - July 7, 2007 11:13 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the clips. That interview is amazing - one of the best I've seen to be honest. As Abzug mentioned, it's so different to UK interviews, in the way that they take certain subject matters very seriously.

Thanks again :)

Ive never seen those interview clips before, thankyou so much for sharing them :) I love it :)
