Title: On homophobia and Simone (a.k.a Helen)
Description: Thoughts

Hi all, I am new in this forum, and I am REALLY new as I just discovered bad Girls recently.

OK I have only seen all of s3 and not much or s1 or 2
But Simone Lahbib's portrayal of Helen Stewart was brilliant.

Needless to write after watching Simone and Mandana act together I embarked on trying to find out as much as I could about Simone Lahbib (oh those lips Good Lord!)

Anyway I came across an interview that left me with a funny feeling. Was it homophobia? Or the remnants of a strict Catholic upbringing (homophobia at it's finest).

I still think she did a brilliant job as Helen and it's really difficult for me to believe that she could play that role so convincingly and be homophobic.

As I watched the finale to Helen and Nikki's story I was left longing for more. Dammit! :o(

Welcome to the Board! We'll talk about those incredible lips later (or PM me, we'll spend quality time and cover several of her physical attributes). What interview was this? It's surprising that she had any feelings of homophobia (perhaps just a cover for hidden desire) since she really threw herself into her role with Nikki. Do elaborate please.

Hey, wow, you managed to bring up a very provocative subject in your first post! We had a discussion about the article I suspect you're talking about:

You can see it got quite heated.

But in addition, I urge you to read a recent interview she did with AfterEllen where she addresses this very issue:

I found this second interview, along with some other longer interviews she did, to be very reassuring in terms of her views on sexuality.

Oh, and make sure you go back and watch S1 and S2--they're WAY better than S3!

Thank you for this Abzug, as always you provide well balanced perspectives for us to consider.

Since the Articles section is specifically for new or old articles, I'm moving this thread to Debates. --ekny, Mod-hat

Abzug did a very good job of posting links to two highly relevant threads. What it comes down to is that the most transparently honest view of Simone's views come over in the AfterEllen piece where they do a fine job of letting her say what she feels. There are Brit magazines who are preoccupied by the 'angle' they want and whose standards of journalism are pretty shoddy to say the least.
