Title: DVD (Reg. 2) in Widescreen?

Hiya -
Can someone please tell me whether the Region 2 DVD release of the show is in widescreen format? The left and right sides of the image seem to be cut out when I play them on my system.
(I suspect that the DVDs are in widescreen format, and that
my DVD player is lopping off the sides of the image to force it into a 4:3 format, even though my TV is widescreen.)
May seem a trivial problem, but God forbid I should miss an inch of Helen's face!

I think the first three series DVDs (region 2) are 4:3 Aspect Ratio. I seem to remember ekny mentioning (somewhere on this site) about the bad transfer onto DVD and that some of the image is lost. Later series are 16:9 aspect ratio.

Oh man, it's really complicated--no one would believe it when I asked them. I think--I might be wrong--that it's in the later half of the music thread, but I'd have to look and have stupid holiday (?!) related stuff to do right. this. minnit! sorry gotta run. But do try to triple-check your tv settings to make sure the display looks right to your eyes, too! :) Post again maybe w/an update, I'll be less rushed & can maybe dig around a bit to find those posts. ETA: someone else more technically competent than myself should feel free to discuss the difference between various aspect ratios, but I thought about this & think it's probably your settings. In other words, if it 'looks' wrong... it shouldn't. No one else's do, & everyone else has exactly the same DVDs.

Yes, but, the first three seasons on dvd are 4:3, NOT widescreen. So as long as things don't look distorted to you, but do look square and lopped off, then you have exactly what all the rest of us have. However, the broadcast versions on Logo and ITV3's recent reruns were all widescreen, which was kind of a treat, because many things were much better framed in the broadcast version than on the dvd. If only they'd re-release the dvds with the original music and the widescreen format. <sigh>
