Title: Hello in there...
Description: Just to introduce myself
Witless544 - November 4, 2007 03:58 PM (GMT)
Hello all - after many moons of lurking about reading everthing there is to read on this marvelous site, I thought it really was time for me to stick my head above the parapet.
I've been a fan of Bad Girls since it first aired on tv here in England all those years ago - 1999 was it? Nikki and Helen? Aaahhhh.....their story has been an endless source of interest to me and I'm so thrilled to know there are so many other addicts - it's not just me who's barmy!
Anyway, enough for now - my best wishes to everyone.

Hi Witless, welcome to the board.
So, you've been a fan since the original series. Maybe you can share with some of us newcomers to Bad Girls what it was like having to suffer through their trials and tribulations one week at a time? I'm guessing Series 3 must have been really hard on the nerves. :eek

Hi and thank you all for your warm welcome. OK, what was it like having to put up with 1 measly hour of BG per week and then having to wait a whole week for the next hour - it was torture, pure and simple (but then, as dear old Oscar Wilde said: the truth is seldom pure and never simple!). Once the Series 1 boxed set was released it wasn't quite so bad. my gf and I bought it (on VHS in those far-off days...) and I'm afraid to admit we played it so often that the tape stretched beyond redemption so we bought another set - honestly! :o
As you rightly say, Series 3 was the worst, knowing that our girls would be leaving the show but not knowing whether they would wander off into the sunset (well, into that shop doorway anyhow) hand in hand or whether Nikki would be sent back to Larkhall to slowly go barmy and the scrumptiously scrumptious Helen Stewart would wander off hand in hand with that dreadful bloke who eats with his mouth open - bleugh!
Forgive my wittering on, I'm afraid I do have a bit of a N/H obsession - so I guess I'm among friends eh?
Cheers, dears, Pat.

Oh yes, I forgot to add my thoughts on Series 2 - all those eps (it seemed like dozens at the time) with no Nikki and no Helen at all - that was awful because we didn't know they weren't going to be in a particular episode, so we sat glued to the damned tv only to be left scratchy and snarky, having been deprived of our girls (my gf is a Nikki person so you can see how interesting the after-show post mortems were in our house...). Pat.

Hi witless, thanks for sharing what it was like On the Scene, as it were, it's always really interesting (to me anyway!) to hear about that from the people who first saw the show!
Can you say a little bit about what brought you out of the shadows now, after all this time...? Curious. The show still seems fresh to you, you're clearly still involved with it, which is very cool.

Indeed you are. I'm so glad I didn't have to go through the series one week at a time.

Hi ekny - what a very interesting question. At the time BG was being shown here in England I didn't really bother much with the many and varied websites that sprang up, but Maggie (my gf) was never off them and she would give me detailed accounts of what was going on. She never joined in mind, just read the interesting stuff.
As I said earlier, she and I have talked long into the night about what Helen meant when she said that or was Nikki really as breathtakingly rude as she sometimes came across - we truly were obsessed with the show. At the time all this was going on we had 3 dear friends who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and it was just dreadful. In a strange kind of way talking about Nikki and Helen seemed to take our minds off the awfulness that was happening around us - it's difficult to explain, but it helped us.
For myself, although I was never unaware of the show and watched the dvds from time to time, it was sort of on a back burner until a few months ago when I got myself into a very dark place, emotionally. No particular reason that I could determine but it wasn't good. I suddenly had a mad passion that I had to watch BG again. So I did - and I watched the Nikki/Helen parts over and over and over again and then Maggie and I started discussing them again and quoting the lines and generally being rather sad (I am, after all, 63 years old...). Almost at the same time I started going onto the AfterEllen website and reading the recaps and I thoroughly enjoyed that. Also the knowledge of how much the American 'girlies' were enjoying it brought a warm glow - and I almost envied them, watching it for the first time. It was from AE that I saw a link to this site and the rest, as they say, is history. Mind you, I did have to pluck up courage to post, because you all sound so extraordinarily intelligent and articulate, I was just a little intimidated, but then I thought - nothing ventured etc.
But the thing is, and I do know how stupid this sounds, Nikki and Helen have once again rescued me from my 'dark place' just as they did when our friends were dying years ago. Because I find the story and its various convolutions so infinitely diverting. I've loved reading the stuff on here - a particular favourite was the debate on flirting, just brilliant.
Sorry to have gone on so long but I wanted to answer your question ekny and I hope I've done so. Pat

|
Hiya aj57 - well I reckon we are. She has put up with me for 16 years so.....
I can't really remember now, but I've consulted the 'oracle' who has reminded me that most of the news and information came from the many and varied BG websites that sprang up. I never used to go onto them but Maggie used to love them and she then used to regale me with all the bits of goss and news she'd garnered. So she's almost certain that the news that Simone and Mandana were going sprang from the Larkhall Insider website which M said was the best of the bunch at the time. She doesn't think Shed even had a website to speak of at that time.
So it was with trepidation that we watched S3 because, as I said in an earlier post, we sort of knew they were going but we didn't know how or when. And of course the infamous "to be continued" at the very end of S3 sent us all into a frenzy of speculation. Pat

Hi Song Stress - no it was not good hanging on from week to week - I seem to recall that BG was originally shown on a Wednesday evening. It seems such a long time ago, thinking back and what a remarkable piece of television for its' time - or any time, come to that.
Thank you for your words of welscome and I certainly shall enjoy meandering; I've already found some very interesting fanfic. Pat :innocent

Hey Pat,
I just wanted to thank you for the moving reply, it's remarkable how effective the show was & continues to be at getting under people's skin & staying there, in the best of ways.

And all these years later, we're essentially doing the same sort of thing here, on the board--only with a bigger group! :) I really think that's the impulse behind a lot of the conversations here, just a really basic need to figure out what so-and-so meant when they said this or did that.
I'm always glad when new people post, we're a pretty harmless lot, I like to think. :lol1 :eek

You did, very eloquently, thank you. :) I'm glad you enjoyed the flirting thread, I always kinda need reminding that lots of people lurk, but are participating, internally, in their own way. That's nice to hear. And I couldn't agree more with your description of the story & its effectiveness. It is infinitely diverting. I for one am infinitely grateful. Thanks again for writing, I hope you enjoy the board! :) --e
