Title: Hello!
SadieSadie - November 11, 2007 04:46 PM (GMT)
My first post to ANY message board EVER! So here I am... after years of ribbing (good-naturedly) one of my best friends for getting all involved with a message board from another TV show. Ah... what goes around comes around, huh? She's going to get quite a kick out of it when I tell her I've joined a Nikki/Helen board!
I don't remember whether I first discovered our ladies through Logo Online or AfterEllen. I doesn't matter. I found them and was instantly hooked. My husband was conveniently away for the weekend and I couldn't tear myself away from the computer having been totally blindsided by Nikki and Helen!
I'm happy to be here and looking forward to some fun conversation!

Thanks everyone! I'm looking around the site at the various forums. Fascinating. I love it.
SadieSadie - November 13, 2007 04:11 PM (GMT)
I have a question about PM and e-mailing.
PM is a private message that shows up in my "inbox" here on the site, right? And if someone clicks on "e-mail" I assume I'll get a message on my e-mail address. Therefore -- if a conversation is to be kept private and away from possibly prying eyes at home who might have access to one's e-mail account it seems PM is the proper choice. But when I've received PM's I get a notice at my e-mail address with a link that tells me I've received a PM and I can read it by clicking the link provided. I click on the link and the entire PM opens right up. I don't have to enter any screen name or password. So, anyone having access to my e-mail account could also click on the PM and read my private message. Am I missing something here? I'm confused.

I think it assumes that your email account is also private (i.e. used only by yourself). You can turn the PM notification off if you want to by ...
My Controls->Email Settings (under Options) then turn off the confirmation email
That should work.
My email notification doesn't actually work any longer so I can't remember what happens if you don't have the password for this board saved on the computer. Does it then prompt for username and password when you click on the link? Not sure.
Cass :)

The long way around this problem is to log out after every session on the board. When you log in again, tell the board that 'no' - you don't want to be remembered. It's a bit of a shlep, because you'll have to log in and out everytime you visit the board, but at least your secrets are safe. If the site remembers you, anyone who accesses the board from your computer would be logged in as you and therefore have access to all your PMs, etc. So, it's not just the links in your inbox that should worry you... :D

Actually an even better solution would be to get your own email account, e.g. a hotmail account through www.hotmail.com (but pick the free account!). Then you link this board to that account.
Problem solved :)

Okay -- Thanks everyone. My e-mail account is very private --- I was actually worrying about the privacy of someone else's account. However, the advice about logging off of the site is valuable. I don't necessarily want anyone who uses my computer to be able to pop onto the site as me and snoop around my PM's!
