Title: Political Bullshit
4us - March 25, 2008 11:29 PM (GMT)
How shocking to be watching the Ellen Show here downunder and hear some totally mad undeniably insane woman spout such disgusting rot showing her unbelievable lack of knowledge and complete ignorance by declaring that being "GAY" is more of a threat than any terrorist.....it is statements like this that make you wonder just how sane or insane some of our so called intelligent men and women in power really are.....
I have to say apart from the shock of her words, I felt utter disgust that it was even aired.....whilst Ellen did a good job of adding some humour to it she was visibly upset by the comments herself and I have no doubt that she will make her views clear and this will not be the last we will hear of it....
This morning our own morning news show had their say and to my relief were as disgusted as I would have hoped...it is simply incredible that anyone would or could compare homosexuality to terrorism....personally I think she should be sacked from her position and severly reprimanded for such a statement, not to mention a public appology...
What an embarressment to the American public .....
Maybe all the homosexuals worldwide should sue for defemation as how more could our charactors be challenged than by comparing us to the lowest of low, terrorists....my blood boils at such a comparison...
Then there is the matter of our kids being taught at school that homosexuality is not a crime......(if indeed they are)...well excuse me for thinking how wonderful it is to teach our kids tolerance, love and respect for others that may be different in some way shape or form....last time I looked this was a positive thing in making the world a better place to live in....and what two year olds attend school anyway??
Perhaps this woman would have done better if she had of checked all her facts or even attended such a school where these aspects of life were taught.....to profess to being a Christian to boot only served to add insult to injury....... as a child of God the first thing you learn is to love one another as He loved us.......the Bible teaches tolerance not bigotry, compassion not revolt against another kind....it is far too easy and done too often to hide beneath the banner of "Christianity" and proclaim to know or have the right to judge another.....it is their place to lead by example, turn the other cheek and not to be seen to judge, this is the fruits of the tree of life that need to be shared among us...not bitter poisen spat out so recklessly by a person with such a public voice claiming to be a "Christian".. this only serves to give a bad wrap to all who walk with God......
So that's how I really feel.......... :angry2

G'day 4 us ,
I would just like to say that I have not watched the Ellen show nor have I seen any thing to do with that particular interview .
I also have no idea who the individual is that had her say about Gay's being more a threat to humanity than Terrorist's .
Now not having seen the show or this lady and if what you state is correct although I totally disagree with the lady's comments and I find them very offensive , I have to say at the end of every day the majority of us human beings live in a free world and with that comes the freedom of free speech .
She is entitled to have her say no matter how wrong or offensive she may be .
I am not taking her side I am just saying she is entitled to say what she thinks even if the majority of us do not agree .
Just like you have the right to say what you think about the matter in this forum and I or any one else for that matter have the right to say what we think too in regard to the matter .
By the sounds of things she probably is homophobic if she is more worried about a Gay individual then a Terrorist .
I don't know know how old this lady is but I an assuming she is old enough to be able to tell the difference and if she is old enough to tell the difference I would have to say there is not much chance in the future of this lady changing her thoughts or her words on the matter .

Just Google for it. Here's the first thing that came up. This will tell you all the pertinent details in the matter.

G'day Jeanna ,
I thank you for the link . I have watched the clip .
Even though I don't agree with the lady's comments and I am no way taking her side , I have to say what I said in my previous post that the lady lives in a free world along with the majority of us and is entitled to free speech along with the rest of us .
No matter how distasteful or hurtful we might find her words .
She is the one who mouthed them so she is the one who has to live with them .

This is the actual speech Sally Kern gave.
Here are the audio and transcript of the entire talk given by Rep. Sally Kern...she claims the portions posted on YouTube were taken out of context.
What do you think?
http://www.equalrightsproject.com/This is a youtube video that was put together by the Victory Fund that took portions of her speech and put it into the video. Her actual speech is worse than this video

Ningi it's a pity you didn't listen to the speech before you replied, perhaps then and if you were gay you may have been as outraged as many others were...I agree with freedom of speech being a right, but I also think the gay community has the right to be outraged at such utter rubbish being spouted by a prominent figure...
Thanks traveller for the links......well I don't know how she could claim she was taken out of context when it was word for word.......it seems that the gay community is being condemd for being an intelligent race...obviously Sally Kerns would rather us be mute and hidden away...or perhaps wiped out completely....I can see no difference in the gay community trying to educate ignorant people nor interact with the world on an equal platform than when the blacks fought for freedom and rights...
No matter what race we are, we are firstly all humans who have been put on this earth as equals...I doubt when God created man He was thinking I will make some models more superior than others.....it is the likes of this woman who segregate and label people in a way that make us less or more superior....
Let me get this right...so if a teacher is openly gay then all the students are being taught to follow suit.......well I can't believe that is happening, for a start there is a school ciriculem that has to be followed and we are not an army trying to recruit new members,
I can see where perhaps if a gay man or woman was President then perhaps they would be a huge influence on changing the way people are judged by society by bringing about laws that prevent us not being treated as equals or by giving us the same rights as so called "normal" people....gee now let me think..can I see any wrong in that?........NO.....
Sally says that gay people are motivated....SO?????? I thought being motivated was a good thing...
I am so sick of gay people being thought of as perverted and sick people...how many times in a week do you hear of a gay person who has either raped or killed......then think how many straights are doing this on a regular basis.....people are just afraid of change and the unknown, so we should be better educating our kids on tolerance....perhaps by doing so they will grow up to make this a better world for their offspring....so far this generation is failing miserably......

**********************************.
4 us it would not of made any difference to my comment if I had read or listened to the speech before I wrote the message .
It also doesn't make any difference if I was Gay or Straight, That has nothing to do with the matter .
No matter how offensive or obnoxious this lady is or how much I find her words to be offensive and dangerous to the point of inciteing trouble world wide she still has the right to free speech .
With out that right we have no voice .
Just because I have not condemmed this lady in a public forum does not mean that I am not outraged at her comments or that I agree with them .
I just decided to keep my personal opinions to my self .
I agree with you the Gay community has every right to be upset by what she has sprouted and they also have every right to say what they feel in their right of reply too.
I also have many Gay & Straight friends and if my friends needed my support I would be there for them it wouldn't make any difference to me if they were Gay or Straight .

Seems like old times you out :guns for me.....lol...let's face it and be honest if I said black you'd say white but hey that's okay .as you say we all have the right to freedom of speech and the right to defend what is said...it just helps when you be totally honest though.....I always seem to get myself in hot water for being so openly honest while you manage to stay luke warm....can't play it both ways for ever you know.....
Looks as if we are about to agree to disagree as usual, but hey that's what makes it so interesting and I look forward to you keeping me on my toes.....
So hope life is treating you well these days......
btw...the thread wasn't about freedom of speech it was about what was said... :thought

Nahhhhhhhh I wasn't out gunning for you at all I am to old to argue with any one these days .
I am being honest and if you said black was black I would agree with you because I know I am not colour blind at all LOL.
All though I am ageing a lot faster than you these days I can still tell the difference between black & white .
I wouldn't say you were in hot water at all you were just defending the gay community which you are a part of and which you are entitled to do .
I know this thread was not about freedom of speech it was about what Sally Kerns said about the Gay community world wide but I just wanted to make a comment that no matter what she said she still has the right of free speech although in her case her mouth should be censored before the words come out of it .
I don't know about my self playing it luke warm but I was not and am not going to leave my self open to a slander charge from Sally Kern's lawyers if I should happen to criticize that obnoxious woman in a open public forum on the internet .
I am not saying that she is likely to go after this little minnow from the land Down Under but I am not going to give her the chance either LOL.
Apart from a couple of things which I won't go into on a public forum life is treating me very well these days .
At the present time I am the happiest that I have been in a long time and that is due to some one in my life .
Thank You for asking how life was treating me these days it is appreciated .
I hope all is well in Hervey Bay with you an Oz too .

Have to say that I too don't wish to be up for slander just a pity Sally didn't think of that before she sprouted off.....my blood still boils....... :angry2
Yes things are still great for us here.oz is fine and we are both very happy, things just keep on getting better.......she is the best thing in my life so all is well with the world we live in.....
Sounds like your hubby has stoked the fires, it is nice to hear that you are still so happy with him after so many years....
back to Sally...I would think that she has sunk her ship and perhaps she has shot herself in the foot and that will be the end of her.....I can't imagine she would be too popular right now.....it is ironic that in the time of perhaps a female president or a man of color showing just how the world has moved on, we find someone still fighting for division amongst us....
who ever wins the election it will be a huge step in paving the way for more total equality...this alone is encouraging....... :clap

I am late to the party here, but I agree this isn't about freedom of speech!
This woman has her head up her a** if she feels that the gay community is more dangerous than a terrorist. :eek She deserves not only the public outcry that she's generating, but also the great parody that Ellen aimed at her. I just can't believe that someone of her status in American politics wasn't "called out" by a colleague for her social ignorance.
As a card carrying member of the lesbian community :rofl , I am totally offended by Sally's comments, and that being said, I back up 4us completely on this topic.
It is much easier to find less fault with Sally Kern's comments, when it doesn't directly reflect your lifestyle.
Just my .02 cents worth.
traveller - March 27, 2008 06:29 AM (GMT)
For those on this thread that commented on Sally Kern's speech agree that her words were vile and unacceptable. Nothing I have read here .... NOTHING ... not one person straight or gay ... finds less fault with Ms Kerns statements. No matter what lifestyle or orientation any person subscribes to - has stated that they agree with what she said.
Sally Kern is entitled to her freedom of speech. She has every right to her opinion and to express it. But she is also a public servant, an elected community leader whose public speeches have an impact beyond her own small sphere. Her remarks were meant to dehumanize gays and lesbians in the most humiliating way. Ms Kern is a politician and should "think before she speaks."
Now, in saying that I must also say that the LGBT community, family and friends have the right to disagree publicly with Sally Kern. It is called freedom of speech. In fact, I believe it is our moral imperative but it needs to be done in a proactive way not in a slanderous damaging way. Threatening her life, sending her hate mail and tearing her apart on public forums is no better that the Anti-gay opinions she voiced in her speech.
I have read that Kern's office has received thousands of messages expressing a range of emotions including shock, anger, outrage and, most prominently, sadness. One statement I read said .... "Among those of us who are gay there is a sinking feeling that we are a little less free than we thought we were."
Here in Canada, gays and lesbians are protected under the Constitution of Canada - Human Rights and Freedoms but one must never take that freedom too lightly or for granted.
Here is a statement made by one of the representative of the GLAAD ..... GAY & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is a non-profit organization of LGBT Activism that is "dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation
"This type of hateful and defamatory language from our public officials is completely unacceptable. GLAAD calls on its members and allies to stand together to hold elected officials like Kern, pledged to serve all the people, accountable for promoting hatred and bigotry. Media have a responsibility to cover Kern's ugly remarks, not only to hold her accountable for her misinformed, inaccurate claims about gay and lesbian people, but also to bring to light the anti-gay attitudes and beliefs that are still all too common in our country, Kern's hateful assertions highlight the need for media to examine how the anti-gay attitudes of elected officials impact their diverse constituencies"
Now, if you are totally offended with Ms Kern's speech then you, your family and friends need to do something about it. Sign petitions, call your elected officials, city and state wide and lodge a complaint and support the GLAAD. Sitting and talking about it on the sidelines and doing nothing is not acceptable.
So, we will have to wait and see what happens to Sally Kern.
IF and I say .... IF .... the people of Oklahoma are really offended by Sally Kern's words and beliefs they have choices. A couple come to mind:
1. Demand that she resign from her position as a political representative of the people in the State, or
2. when the next election rolls around .... don't vote for her.
Her words will come back on her .... I assure you.
It may not be tomorrow or next week but it will happen.
That is my 3 cents worth. Thanks for allowing me my opinion.
4us - March 27, 2008 12:25 PM (GMT)
Traveller your opinions are more than welcome and much enjoyed...it was never doubted that we were not all as unhappy and disgusted with what was said....I agree even ningi was outraged at such disgusting statements....my objection if you like, was that I had written what I felt was insulting and derogative to the gay community and was totally serious and upset by it....I was confused then that someone who by their own admission, had not heard or knew anything about it and who also stated that they had decided to keep their opinions private, would bother to reply at all if not to only bait me.....to ram home the right of freedom of speech was not the topic nor was it a concern.....
In doing this I believe it took away from the seriousness of the matter and that was what riled me the most....so be it now that we have all had our say and exercised our freedom of speech and all agree that this was a distasteful statement made by Sally Kern.
You are right to sit and whinge is not going to do anything....we are powerless here to vote or have a say in this particular matter, but heaven help if one or any of our politicians ever sprout such garbage......
It's nice to see you have ningi's back.....us girls need to stick together....
