Title: Chances

I am happy to accept feedback openly by readers. (BOARD NOTE we would recommend if any length i.e. more than a couple of points, it is done privately away from the story itself).

Now below is our standard disclaimer. We ask that at the start of a story, you also have something similar, or you can use this one instead!

This story is complete - I just need to type it up (yeah I'm a writer who has to hand write everything) - so I will be posting a chapter a day. It seems Emms and I kind of had similar story ideas ... though from a slightly different perspective (obvious and cliche as the plot may be) ... I hope you guys are okay with that! Also posting in this area because the rating will rise ... eventually.
Chapter 1
“But I want a woman,” Helen Stewart said … a little nervously … hoping Nikki Wade would see the truth in her eyes.
Nikki could barely breathe – here were the words she’d been waiting for … longing for … she allowed herself a moment to bask in the warmth the words produced … but only for a moment. Because after everything at Larkhall – Thomas, riots, jealousy, breakups and misunderstandings – could she trust … believe the other woman? “Helen … you have no idea how much this means to me … how much I … but,” she said – the look on her face turned to one of regret.
Helen felt afraid … her heart began to beat faster … she looked into Nikki’s eyes and thought she saw love … her love returned … but now she wasn’t sure. “What is it sweetheart?” she asked softly.
Nikki took a deep breath. “I can’t … we can’t …,” she said hesitantly.
Helen reached over and cupped Nikki’s cheek and caressed with her thumb. “We can’t what?” she asked.
Nikki stepped back – away from Helen – it was so hard to think when the other woman touched her – she saw the pain in Helen’s eyes and she swallowed hard. “We can’t be together,” she replied.
Helen looked down at the ground – she clasped her hands together … willing herself not to reach out for Nikki again. “I waited too long,” she whispered – she looked at Nikki again. “I hurt you too much and you can’t forgive me.”
Nikki hated hearing the distress in Helen’s voice – all she wanted was to pull her into her arms. “It’s not that I can’t forgive you,” she replied. “But … you chose Waugh over me and …”
“I know I made a mistake with Thomas,” Helen interrupted. “But it’s over … I know …”
Nikki shook her head to stop the flow of words. “There’s more to it,” she whispered.
“What?”
“It’s not just that I’m not sure I can trust you … that I worry you’d eventually leave me for a man again,” Nikki answered. She looked down into the most beautiful eyes she’d ever seen. “I promised Trisha … she asked for a second chance and I agreed … I promised to try.”
“But if you don’t love her …,” Helen said – she couldn’t believe this was happening … she thought it might be difficult to convince Nikki she wanted them to be together, but she hadn’t anticipated this.
“She helped with the appeal … with petitions and we talked about this … I owe her a chance,” Nikki answered softly. “I take my promises seriously.”
“We made promises to each other too,” Helen replied.
“But you broke them,” Nikki countered. “And weren’t even sad about it.”
Tears filled Helen’s eyes … there was so much to explain – to talk about and she felt time slipping away too quickly. “I’m so sorry I said that … I didn’t really feel that way,” she replied. “And if you’ll give me a chance … to talk about it … to make it right.”
Nikki shook her head again. “No … I’m sorry too … it’s …,” she said – stealing herself for what had to be said. “It’s too late.”
Helen felt the words like a blow – she struggled to take a breath. “What now?” she asked.
“I hope we can be friends,” Nikki answered. “I want you to be a part of my life.”
Helen managed a pained smile. “I don’t know if I can do that,” she whispered. “I’m in love with you.” She wrapped her arms around her waist. “You should go back to your party … to Trisha.” Self preservation was all she had left … she couldn’t look into Nikki’s eyes anymore.
Nikki didn’t want Helen to leave …. She wanted … her. But she knew she wasn’t being fair … she was asking too much of Helen and probably of Trisha. Could she keep her promise to Trish and still be friends with Helen? She didn’t know … but she had to try. “Can … I call you?” she asked.
Helen took a deep breath – she struggled to find the right words. “Maybe in a couple of weeks,” she finally said. “I … need time.” She turned and walked away – pain swept through every part of her body and mind. ‘Nikki doesn’t love me anymore … she’s staying with Trish.’ The words mocked her.
Nikki watched Helen until she disappeared from sight – she wanted to run after her – to tell her about all the dreams she had for them. But she couldn’t … she’d made her choice and she wasn’t someone who took those things lightly. She wiped her eyes and finally walked toward the club. It wasn’t as though she didn’t care about Trisha … and perhaps in time she would fall in love with her again.

Chapter 2
“Here’s to your new job,” Claire Walker said as she touched her glass to Helen’s. “I know you’ve been there a while, but since this is the first chance we’ve gotten together I figured we could celebrate.”
Helen smiled – grateful for the support she had from her best friend. The last few weeks had been difficult, but now with a new job perhaps she could begin to move on with her life. Nikki was never far from her mind and she knew the other woman would always be in her heart … but she needed to accept how things were. “Thank you,” she said. “And for all your understanding too.”
Claire gazed at her friend – unsure if she should say what was on her mind. “Have you talked to Nikki?” she asked carefully – she instantly regretted the question the moment she saw the flash of pain in Helen’s eyes.
“She called once and left a message … otherwise I haven’t heard from her,” Helen replied. “She’s probably been very busy … like me.” The truth was … she hadn’t been busy so much as locked away. After her last conversation with Nikki, she bought a lot of vodka and food and locked herself in her flat. She needed to be alone, to think and more importantly to heal. After a week of self pity – she decided it was time to look for a job.
Claire sighed. “I don’t understand why you aren’t fighting for her,” she responded. “I’ve seen the two of you together … I know how much you love each other.”
“Nikki doesn’t feel that way about me anymore,” Helen replied – she reached over and squeezed Claire’s hand. “I let her down too often … chose a man over her.”
“Everyone makes mistakes …”
“I made too many,” Helen said softly – tears filled her eyes. “I took her love for granted.”
“Fight for her,” Claire replied. “Show her things will be different.”
Helen shook her head. “No … this is what Nikki wants,” she said. “I’m going to respect her wishes.”
“I’ll bet Monica agrees with me,” Claire said – she wished she could find the words to force Helen into action.
Helen grinned. After her week long lock-in – she’d wound up interviewing for a job with Monica Lindsay’s charity organization and now she was the director. She raised money and made decisions on what programs they would begin and support. Prison reform was important to her – helping women prisoners in need … she was finally making a difference. “And she reminds me of it often,” she said. “She’s still close to Nikki and doesn’t believe she’s happy.”
“That’s exactly my point,” Claire replied. “Neither of you are.”
“I’m getting better every day.”
Claire stared at her skeptically. “Then perhaps its time for a girls night out,” she replied. “We could find you a date.”
Helen blushed and shifted uncomfortably in her chair. “I think I’ll pass on that for now,” she answered. “I’m just not ready.”
“This goes to prove my original point about Nikki.”
“I know what you’re saying,” Helen replied. “But you need to understand. This is about her feelings – not mine. Nikki takes commitment … promises very seriously … so she’s not just playing with Trisha. I love her enough to let her go.”
Claire sighed again – she hated to admit it, but Helen was probably right. A feeling of sadness stole over her. Her best friend had finally truly fallen in love, but wasn’t getting to enjoy the feeling. “Okay … I understand,” she said. “I’m here if you need to talk … or to go out and get pissed and I’ll be here to take you out on the town when you’re ready.”
Helen smiled. “Thank you,” she said. The moment was interrupted by her cell phone. She looked at the display and frowned. “It’s Nikki.”

Hey great start! I kind of like Helen having to face consequences to her actions with Nikki, but at the same time I don't because they belong together (in my opinion anyway). Ah well, I'm sure it will work out in the end (after a few painful episodes for all involved) and it looks like it will be a good story in the meanwhile, I will just sit back and enjoy :popcorn

Nice start. Here's hoping that Nikki realizes commitment to someone when you're in love with someone else is not fair to either party. Looks like Helen is past her denial stage and ready to move on with a woman. Better watch out Nikki or you'll have to start chasing her again.
Looking forward to reading more. Very well crafted. :D

Chapter 3
Nikki walked into her bedroom – her body tired and relaxed from a long run, but her mind still raced. She was meeting Helen for lunch today. She had wanted to call much sooner than she did, but fought the temptation … determined to give the other woman the time she needed.
She grabbed towels and started to walk to the bathroom – just then the bedroom door opened.
Trisha wrapped her arms around Nikki and tried to pull her close. “Hey babes … how was your run?” she asked.
Nikki drew away from the embrace. “I’m sweaty,” she explained.
“I like you sweaty,” Trisha said seductively as she reached out again.
“Trish … I’m not ready,” Nikki said when she once again stopped the woman from touching her.
“It’s almost been a month.”
“And you said you understood … that you’d be patient,” Nikki replied.
“I think I’ve been more than patient,” Trisha responded. “My God … we don’t even share a bedroom … we’re not partners … we’re roommates.”
Nikki sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. “I told you this would take time,” she said. “I fell in love with Helen … it was the real thing … and even though it’s over … feelings don’t disappear overnight.”
Trisha tried to swallow down her anger, but it was impossible. “And now you’re having lunch with her today,” she hissed.
“Helen and I were friends before anything else,” Nikki replied softly. “We talked about books … we turned to one another for help in Larkhall … I miss that friendship.”
“Oh please … the truth is … you’re still in love with her and just want to be close to her,” Trisha yelled. “Why are you even with me?”
“Stop being jealous,” Nikki said firmly – a feeling of déjà vu swept over her – hadn’t Helen said the very same thing to her at one time? “I’m not in love with her … and I’m with you because I care about you … we shared nine years together.”
“We don’t share anything now,” Trisha replied bitterly.
Nikki reached out and caressed Trisha’s cheek. “But we can … and will … if you don’t try to force it to happen,” she said.
Trisha nodded her head and smiled weakly. She loved Nikki – she needed to respect the other woman’s wishes or she would never get her back completely. “I better get to the club … there are some deliveries coming in,” she said. “Have a good lunch.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Nikki walked into the restaurant and was surprised to find Helen already seated. She paused before going to the table – just to drink in the sight of her. Helen’s hair was a bit longer and darker. She looked gorgeous as always and Nikki realized to her chagrin – she had lied to Trisha earlier … because she was still totally in love with Helen. She took a deep breath and walked to the table.
“Hiya Nikki,” Helen said – she smiled as she waited for the other woman to settle. “Did you have any trouble find this place?”
“No, not at all – you gave great directions,” Nikki replied – she looked at Helen and was momentarily lost in her hazel eyes. “So you said this was close to work?”
“Yes … my office is right around the corner actually,” Helen answered. “I have a few meetings later today … so I didn’t want to be far away.”
“Monica said you’re doing a wonderful job,” Nikki said after the waiter left with their drink order.
“I’m glad she thinks so,” Helen replied. “This position has given me an opportunity to really make a difference and I’m grateful for it.”
Nikki smiled – she knew how important that was to Helen. “A lot different then fighting the old boy’s club at Larkhall?” she asked – she laughed when Helen rolled her eyes.
Their conversation continued during the meal – they talked about work and books … movies they’d seen, but they avoided anything too personal.
As they sipped coffees after the lunch, Nikki realized how much she’d enjoyed their time together. She caught Helen’s eyes. “I’ve missed you,” she said softly.
“I’ve missed you too.”
Nikki smiled. “So are you seeing anyone?” she asked – she wished she could take the question back when she saw the distressed look on Helen’s face.
“I don’t want to talk about things like that,” Helen replied – trying to keep her tone light.
“But if we’re going to be friends … we should.”
Helen looked at Nikki with sad eyes. “I’m not sure we’re ever going to be friends in that way,” she responded. “It may be okay for you to hear about someone new in my life because … things have changed for you … but I can’t hear about your new life with Trisha,” she stood abruptly and looked at her watch. “I really should be going.”
“Please don’t … I’m sorry if I upset you,” Nikki said – she wanted Helen to stay … she wanted to reach out and touch her … it was selfish she knew … but she couldn’t help it.
“It’s okay … and I’m sorry too … about so many things,” Helen replied as she sat down. She looked at Nikki with a thoughtful expression on her face. “I know I made a lot of mistakes in Larkhall, but above anything else … I thought I told you how I felt about you … I thought I showed you too … but …”
“But what?”
“It seems I didn’t … because that last day we talked … all you remembered was me saying I wasn’t sad about our final breakup.”
“It’s what you said,” Nikki replied a bit defensively.
“Yes … because I was upset … because things were so out of control,” Helen said. “The night before you were released … I did a lot of soul searching and I promised myself … if you ever gave me another chance … I’d say I love you everyday … I’d do better than I did.” She paused and tucked her hair behind her ear. “When you made that speech … I was sure I was being given a gift … but I was wrong.”
“Helen …”
“It’s okay … really,” Helen interrupted. “All of that insight will help me in the future … when I do meet someone new … anyway … right now …I can’t share your happiness … I know how that sounds … but please try to understand.”
“I do,” Nikki answered. “Can I call you … can we have lunch again?”
Helen wasn’t sure she could do this … when all she wanted was to ask Nikki for another chance … to give them another try. She forced a smile. “You can call … and maybe I’ll answer … I can’t make any promises,” she said.

Chapter 4
“What’s wrong Nik?”
Nikki looked at the bartender and tried to smile. Susan was a true friend … someone she’d met when she first moved to the city when she was young. They supported each other through a lot of good and bad. Susan was the only person Nikki talked to about Helen.
“I had lunch with Helen today.”
“Oh … didn’t it go well?” Susan asked.
Nikki chuckled bitterly. “I’d say just the opposite,” she answered. “It was the best time I’ve had in a long while.”
“I don’t understand what you’re doing,” Susan replied. “You know she hasn’t gone back to that doctor … you obviously still love her … though you pretend not to …”
“I’m with Trisha,” Nikki said sharply. “My feelings for Helen changed with she chose Thomas.”
“It seems to me she made a mistake … one that she corrected,” Susan responded. “Are you telling me you can’t forgive her?”
“I have.”
“Then please explain what you’re doing,” Susan said again.
Nikki sat down and exhaled. “I don’t know anymore,” she answered. “I thought I’d lost Helen and so I promised Trisha we could try again …”
“And you have, but it’s not working.”
“We don’t know that for sure,” Nikki replied. “It hasn’t been that long … we just need to try harder.”
“You work hard at a relationship … you shouldn’t have to do that to fall in love … it just happens,” Susan said – she squeezed her friends hand. “If it was a good lunch why do you look upset?”
“I’ve been thinking about something she said.”
“Oh?”
“Basically she said I seemed to only remember the bad stuff.”
“Is she right?”
“I don’t know … I guess I do focus on the situation with Thomas … how she pulled the power game on me,” Nikki answered. “But she said she thought she told me how she felt and showed me too – but she now thinks it wasn’t enough.”
“Did she?” Susan asked – though Nikki had shared about the relationship … she sensed she got the barebones version.
Nikki got a far away look on her face as she considered the question. “When she quit her job as wing governor … I was sure I’d never see her again,” she said. “And then postcards started to arrive … with pictures of our favorite authors on them. Then she wrote letters.”
“Anything juicy in them?” Susan asked mischievously.
Nikki laughed. “Well the guards screened all our mail … so she had to be careful … she wrote about books and general things,” she answered. “I just had to read between the lines.” She took a sip of her water. “I sent her a visitor’s pass … I really didn’t think she’d use it. But she did.”
“Wow.”
“What?”
“I mean … a former wing governor visiting an inmate … that took some guts,” Susan said. “You never told me this.”
“I didn’t?”
Susan shook her head.
“She broke up with her fiancé because of her feelings for me,” Nikki continued. “Not that she ever admitted it.”
“Okay … so she did show you …”
Tears filled Nikki’s eyes. “I know … I just realized that today,” she whispered. “She told me too but I think I was always so busy being jealous or demanding she acknowledge her feelings … I’m not sure I listened.” She got up and grabbed a tissue before sitting down again. “I wrote her a love letter and she told me later she felt exactly the same way. She told me not to believe she was fickle about her feelings for me … she asked me to trust her when she said we’d work it out.”
Susan squeezed Nikki’s hand. “You told me Helen had dinner with one of the guards … she said it was business, but you knew he was interested in her … so you were angry,” she said. “Would you feel the same if it happened now? What I mean is … if the two of you were living together and Helen had a business dinner with a colleague …”
Nikki thought about the question and shook her head. “No … because I’d know she was coming home to me,” she answered. “But there … I didn’t know … it was so hard …”
“Maybe most of the problems between you and Helen were related to you being in prison … more than the man or woman thing,” Susan said. “Isn’t that possible?”
“Maybe … but it doesn’t matter now,” Nikki responded. “I made a choice.”
“Don’t start on that I made Trish a promise thing again,” Susan said firmly. “She must know something’s wrong.”
“She does … but we’re working on it,” Nikki replied.
“You’re miserable,” Susan said. “That smile on your face when you first talked about your lunch with Helen … it’s the happiest I’ve seen you since this all began.”
“That’s not true,” Nikki responded. “And I’m not miserable.”
“Nikki … you’ve changed since Larkhall,” Susan said – her tone exasperated. “Your heart changed.”
Nikki felt tears fill her eyes again – she didn’t know how much longer she could hold onto her emotions. “Helen would have left me for a man eventually,” she said softly. “It’s easier this way.”
Susan shook her head in disgust. “You keep telling yourself that and maybe one day you’ll even believe it,” she said. “But from what you just told me … I don’t think it’s true. You gave up without a fight … without giving her a chance to explain. And that’s not the Nikki I know and love.”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Helen paced in her living room – furious. She supposed the time had come for this … after all it was a step in the grieving process. When the doorbell rang – she hurried to answer it.
“Are you okay?” Claire asked immediately. “You sounded terrible on the phone.”
“I had lunch with Nikki today.”
“That’s right,” Claire replied. “I take it you need my shoulder?”
“Actually … no … I’m not upset … I’m angry,” Helen said.
“What? Why?”
“The lunch went fine … we were just talking about work and books,” Helen explained. “And then she asked if I was seeing anyone.”
“Oh boy.”
“She was just so … cavalier about it,” Helen continued. “It would have been no big deal if there was someone in my life – it wouldn’t matter to her in the least.”
“Maybe she’s really trying to be a friend,” Claire said – she stroked Helen’s arm to comfort her.
“She knows how I feel,” Helen replied. “She just sat there … surprised I didn’t want to share our romantic lives … she was unemotional … it was so unlike her. I guess she really has moved on.”
“Maybe and maybe not,” Claire said thoughtfully. “Perhaps its time to show her you’re over her.”
“What?”
“Well, she wants to be friends … wants to know if you’re dating,” Claire replied. “Let’s show her.”
“And how do you propose I do that?” Helen asked.
“We’ll get dressed up and go pick up some women,” Claire answered. “You said it yourself … you’re sure about your sexuality.”
Helen laughed. “Let me guess … we’ll go to Chix?” she asked. When Claire nodded – she raised her eyebrow. “Isn’t this plan a bit … childish?”
“Maybe … but I think it’s time to find out what’s really going on,” Claire answered.
“Meaning?”
“You can’t let her go … until you know for sure,” Claire said. “So as childish as it may seem … let’s find out how she reacts when she actually sees you with someone else.”
“You’re awfully sure I can find someone at the club,” Helen replied.
“Please … have you seen yourself?” Claire said. “You’ll have to beat them off with a stick … add that accent and they’ll be dropping at your feet.”
“Why Claire Walker … I had no idea you ever noticed me that way,” Helen said impishly.
“It was a long time ago at University,” Claire responded. “But sadly you didn’t return my interest.”
Helen grinned and hugged her friend – having a plan felt good.

Chapter 6
Helen stood next to Claire in the line at Chix … she was a bit nervous … not only about seeing Nikki, but at the idea of meeting other women. She had never been involved with a woman in that way … until Nikki – that relationship had opened something inside her which she’d locked away since childhood.
Suddenly, the door of the club opened and Nikki stepped out to talk to the bouncer – she glanced at the line and was surprised to see Helen and Claire … she waved them over.
“These two never have to wait,” Nikki said to the bouncer. “They are VIP’s.”
“Thanks,” Helen said once they were inside. “I was afraid we’d never get in.”
“Glad to help,” Nikki replied. She looked at them both and noted they were dressed to kill. “And what brings you out tonight?”
“I thought it was time for Helen to explore her new status,” Claire answered.
Nikki gazed at Helen and knew she wouldn’t have any trouble doing just that – she felt her heart tighten in her chest. “Well … good luck with that,” she said as calmly as she could – she forced a smile to her face. “Why don’t you grab a table and I’ll send over drinks.”
“I guess we got our answer,” Helen said after they sat down.
“What do you mean?”
“She doesn’t seem phased that I’m here to meet someone,” Helen replied.
“Oh she cares,” Claire answered. “She just hasn’t shown it yet.”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“Who are those two?” Susan asked as she poured the drinks for Nikki.
“That’s Helen and her friend Claire,” Nikki replied. “Helen is the shorter one. Claire was the solicitor who took on my case.”
Susan looked at Helen and whistled under her breath. “You never said she was a babe,” she said.
Nikki was startled to hear the same words that Trisha had said in the Visitor’s Room. “I’m pretty sure I did,” she replied dryly.
“Why is she here?”
“She’s starting to date,” Nikki answered – sadness stole over her once again.
“I’d point out that she’s looking for a woman and not a man,” Susan said. “But I guess you worked that out for yourself.”
Nikki shot her friend a dirty look.
“Well … anyway … you got your wish.”
“I’m sorry?”
“You wanted to know about her live life … so she’s here to share it with you,” Susan said.
Nikki turned … intent on delivering the drinks herself – but stopped when she saw Helen chatting with a dark haired woman. She stopped a server and asked her to bring the drinks to the table – she just couldn’t face watching Helen with someone else close-up.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Helen slid her arms around Alex’s neck as they pressed together for the slow dance. At first, she’d been a bit unsure about dancing with the other woman – but after a few drinks and some good conversation … she was enjoying herself.
Alex pulled Helen closer and brought her lips to her ear. “You feel really good in my arms,” she whispered.
Claire looked up from her conversation and briefly watched Helen and Alex dance … before she looked over to the bar. If she didn’t like Nikki so much – she would have laughed at the look on her face. “Do you need another drink?” she asked her companion – before she walked up to the bar.
“Hey Claire … another round?” Nikki asked.
“That would be perfect,” Claire answered – she looked at the dance floor again. “I wasn’t sure how she’d do on her first night a lesbian bar, but she seems to be fine.”
“Yeah … she’s a big hit,” Nikki replied bitterly – she handed over the drinks.
“Nikki … is this really what you want?” Claire asked. “Helen with someone else?” She reached for the other woman’s hand and squeezed. “I can see how you look at her and I know you aren’t happy right now.”
“I have to get used to the idea,” Nikki replied.
“You really are as stubborn as Helen said.”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Alex leaned down and kissed Helen lightly … playfully.
Helen kissed Alex back, but … something was missing. Her mind went back to the first time she kissed Nikki … it had been amazing. She shook herself from thoughts of the other woman and concentrated on Alex.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“They’re very cozy,” Susan remarked as she stood next to Nikki.
Nikki turned to her – her eyes filled with tears. “Yes they are and I can’t watch anymore,” she whispered. “Can you handle the bar?”
“Sure … of course.”
Nikki quickly walked to the office and finally began to cry. Helen was going to leave with that other woman … would be touching her later tonight …

Noooooo! Nikki, how could you? *sobs* Not like you to give up like this. I thought you would at least have fought for her in spite of your half-hearted promise to Trisha. Someone needs to knock some sense into you ... and sadly it doesn't look like Claire or Susan is going to step to the challenge. Oh well, here goes ...
Cass ---> :kick <--- stubborn Nikki

I know! And after reading that I was very tempted to post the next chapter ... but I can't ... I promised one a day and that's the schedule we are on. Besides it gives everyone time to catch up!
