Title: Marriage Equality comes to California
Description: Court overturns marriage discrimination

solitasolano - May 15, 2008 05:41 PM (GMT)
State Supreme Court opinion was released a half hour ago. In a 4-3 decision, the California Supreme Court overturned Proposition 22, a voter initiative from 2000, which explicitly defined marriage as hetero only.

Well no more. For some quick references go to a fav blog of mine

Time to celebrate today and worry about the anti gay voter initiative coming up in November election which would outlaw marriage equality by changing the state constitution. The struggle never ends it seems, but good day today.

:party is an understatement.

I think I need to book a flight to California quickly... I can see my services as a wedding photographer being in demand in the next few months! :)

Hopefully, this decision won't be overturned in November! It's about time we get some rights!

I wasn't sure where to post this piece which follows on neatly from the piece above and she has to be given real credit for the UK Civil Partnership Act, something that I'm sure would be hugely appreciated in other countries. I must make clear that, while there is that to commend her, she is the average New Labour politician and if only her views, progressive in one area, could be matched in other areas. If she followed the example of John McDonnell, the one decent guy in the Labour Party, I would be throwing bouquets out of the window, this landmark event wouldn't make my own reactions so mixed.

Treasury Minister Angela Eagle has become the first female MP to tie the knot in a civil partnership.

The Labour MP for Wallasey and Maria Exall, her partner of 18 years, made the commitment at Southwark Register Offices in south London.

Ms Eagle, 47, was involved in bringing in the Labour government's Civil Partnerships Act of 2004.

Ms Eagle's twin sister Maria said: It's been great, everyone was very pleased and they are very much in love."

About 50 guests witnessed the ceremony and were heading to Ms Eagle's home for a reception.

Further celebrations were planned for a Clapham pub, where Commons Leader Harriett Harman was expected to be among the guests.

Ms Harman announced her colleague's engagement at the TUC Congress in Brighton earlier this month.

Ms Eagle met Ms Exall, a BT engineer, at the Peckham Labour Party.

Ms Eagle, who has been the MP for Wallasey since 1992, is the only openly gay woman in the House of Commons.

Shadow business secretary Alan Duncan became the first Tory MP to enter into a civil partnership in July, when he wed his partner, James Dunseath.
