Yvonne / end of S5 (includes spoilers)
(includes spoilers for anyone who's managed to avoid discussions of BG post-S3!)

Does anyone know *why* Henry wanted Yvonne to die, if she wanted a particular type of death--iconic, gruesome, what? I mean, I keep seeing this 'fact'--LH wanted Yvonne to die, she was very clear about that--without any context. Are there no post S5 interviews with her? My impression is fans are so permanently angry/upset about the way she died that they don't even want to go there.

But I would. At the very least I'd like to read a few articles if anyone knows of any comments whatever that Henry's made on the whys of Yvonne's demise.

I'd be interested in the answer to that question as well.

Yvonne
Yeah... I wish there were some interviews out there about that, but I haven't found any yet. I continued watching Bad Girls after season 3 because she was one of my favorites. Very sad how things ended for such a strong character.

I'll be happy when season 7 arrives so I can see the "pay back" for her death.

Assuming that something is known of Fenner's death, I tend to wonder if Shed wrote Yvonne's exit with any conception of how they would build for Fenner's demise or whether or not they improvised the later event. Shed do claim to go in for long term strategic planning and leave the credited writers of each episode to take on 'dialogue' writing. If that were the case, then it was Shed not Yvonne Henry who devised her exit. You are quite right to describe the reaction as you did, ekny, as it did totally freak out a lot of Yvonne fans. I can remember at the time LH saying that she would be sad to leave her character behind but haven't anything recorded and this would fit in. I would admit that I don't know of anything conclusive that would to definitely settle the matter.

Check out the latest Q&A with Shed--that has the info we are all referring to, as well as a reference to how they staged Fenner's death:

6. My wife and I were devastated by the murder of Yvonne Atkins. How did you come to the decision to plot the storyline that way? At the end of series 5 did you already have the idea of having Fenner murdered in the hanging cell in series 7?

A. We did at one stage plot the storyline to allow for the possibility that Yvonne had somehow managed to escape, but Linda Henry was adamant that her character should die. We decided to have Jim murdered in the hanging cell when we were developing the stories for Series 7. Prior to that, we were storylining on the basis that Jack Ellis was leaving the show at the end of Series 6. So, as you can see, our power over our characters’ fates is somewhat less than god-like, but we hope you felt that Jim finally got his just desserts for his many crimes. We, too, really miss Yvonne Atkins.

You can GO HERE for the full Q and A.

W/o knowing how Fenner's death ties in--I know he dies but not the details--I can't comment on the first half of your post. Yvonne's death was made particularly hard to bear by the whole disintegration of her character beforehand, although she rallies a bit at the end--but the breakdown in solitary didn't work for me very well, particularly screaming 'I'm innocent'--gah, just makes me wince. & why she didn't contact Lauren again... I don't know. Whole thing doesn't sit right with me. I agree, I can't imagine Shed would let actors dictate something so important as a character's demise, but it still feels unlikely. --e

******Spoiler alert in this post on Fenner ,Series 7 *******
I have been in a dilemma as I'm aware that there are a good number of very worthy American BG fans who I am certain won't have had access to Series 7. I am in danger of dropping vague hints which is the worst of all worlds. It does mean that those same posters will be able to let their considerable power for insight and analysis loose in a few weeks time which is something I for one will be looking forward to. To ensure that those who hate spoilers and don't want to read them, I shall try my best to explain the minimum necessary to back up the point I am making that Yvonne's exit is integral to the series as a whole. The spoiler starts after the asterisks I have put in to separate off the spoiler material. Those who can read are able to and those who don't are hopefully forewarned.

The Julies organise a memorial for Yvonne in the hanging cell and lure Fenner to be on guard on the outset. They set out candles in a decorative arrangement which are poisoned and drug Fenner to become semi conscious. When he staggers out he is stabbed by Julie Johnson.

Hi R,

As someone who really does hate spoilers, thanks very much for posting this in this way. I got all squinty-eyed as soon as I saw it & will now leave this thread for awhile, I think, or at least try to avoid spoiler-related stuff til I see S7. Just wanted you to know why I wasn't responding! ;) --e

(I realize this is a little bizarre as I started the darn thread, but I didn't realize it was going to take this direction.)
