Anybody Knows the Songs Used in S1-S3?
Hi!

I've been trying to find out some of the songs that were used in BG S1 & just couldn't find them!! Sad

So, if anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it! There was this song that was played in Ep 5 (Tangled Web) when Helen Stewart was driving in her car. It sounded like Oasis but I searched high & low for it that had the lyrics that I heard in that episode to no avail! Crying or Very sad

Also, anyone knows what song was played in Nikki Wade's club when she, Trisha along w/ the rest of her friends celebrated her release?

Thanks in advance for your help!! :D

Song one
Okay this mystery song caused all kinds of grief for a while and finally someone found out in around May 2002.

"Back Against The Wall" By Loveday and Loveday and apparently you could contact the agents Music House International on this telephone number 02074349678.

I have to stress - this isn't a current number of contact since it is now well over 3 years old - so I have no idea if it is still valid.

As for the Club - there was Texas and Tom Jones - not too sure which one you are referring to.

Hope this helps.

As long as we're talking music. I've been trying to figure out who sings this song so I could use it on the N/H Quiz page, but can't figure it out and now it's driving me crazy.
In Series 1, Episode 1 when Helen is laying on the floor (wait let me enjoy that visual for a moment) :D Sean is rubbing her feet and there's a song playing in the background that I swear sounds like Sarah Brightman, but can't find anything using the few lyrics I can make out.
Anyone got a clue?
Thanks

ccogz! I thought I was the only person asking others what the hell that song was in Helen's car! I too thought it was an Oasis song called "back against the wall" and was trying to sing this song to a few of my friends who are oasis fans! Thank god I am not alone!
The song in the club is by Texas. I am sure the song they were playing was called "in our lifetime". Its on 2 albums. One is called "The Hush" and the other is "Texas the greatest hits". If it isn't In our lifetime it will be one of the other songs on the greast hits album, but im sure it is in our lifefime. The problem is I can't check the Texas song to see if I am right coz when it was shown on tv and on the videos they played texas but on the DVDS they have changed the musis in the background!! I bought the videos when they came out. Then dvds with extras appeared and I bought them and left the videos at my parents. So I hope the info I am giving you is right. Was the Tom Jones song not Sex Bomb? :?

Oh, thank you, guys!!! ILMJN, you're a saviour!!! Never heard of Loveday & Loveday?! Gosh, the lead singer sure sounded like Gallagher from Oasis!! You don't know how much grief we had arguing and debating about who sang it & me, I was dead sure it was Oasis but had to eat my own words after searching practically all the Oasis lyrics online for the words that were sung in the episode and...NADA!!!! :x

Golly, Guest, I know exactly what you're saying there about Oasis & am hugely relieved that I ain't the only one having been racking my brains trying to figure this one song out! Phew!

Oh, Texas & Tom Jones, eh? Didn't recognize either of them! Sad I know, a pretty sad cow I am, ain't I! Embarassed

My, I just can't thank you enough for your help, ILMJN & Guest!!! Cheers!! :D

Uh-oh, OWH, I'm afraid I've no idea who was singing in the background in the Helen/Sean/rubbing of feet scene....!! Sorry! In fact, we've only been able to figure out some of the music/songs that were used in all 3 series...let's see:

- Macy Gray (S3) - not 100% sure which song yet 'coz most of her songs have similar music beats but will figure it out, by hook or by crook!!
- Staying Alive Remix - don't know who did the remix but trying to dig it now!
- Simon & Garfunkel (S3) - Scarborough Fair
- Amazing Grace (S1) - well, if we didn't recognize that, we'd have no reason to live anymore, do we?!
- Kum Ba Yah (S1-2) - duh!!

That's it - pathetic, ain't it? Embarassed

Hmm.. wonder if anyone of you out there actually managed to recognize ALL the songs/music that were used in the 3 series, eh?

If so, then,... WOW!! I raise my hat & kneel to thee in awe of thy greatness!!!! wow

Thanks for your thoughts, I'll figure it out somehow.
I thought I read somewhere that K.D. Lang's "Constant Craving" is in the background of one of the episodes, but I've never come across it.

Hey OWH, if I manage to figure it out, I'll let you know right away, eh?

Regarding k.d. Lang, they used "Constant Craving" in one of the scenes but changed it to something else (some Jazz music, I think?) Anyway, you can check out the deleted scene where they used kd's "CC" on the DVD set.

I have all 6 series on DVD and believe me I've watched the first 3 series a lot and still can't find CC, I thought it was in the scene where Dominic is at Helen's house after they went out drinking, (you know where she says something like, "I've been known for my persuasive powers") but not on my DVD's, no big deal, just curious.
The big deal is that other song that is driving me crazy, if you manage to figure it out, pleassssssssse let me know.
I've tried every on-line data base with the lyrics I can make out, but still nothing.

Does anyone know the two songs playing when Dominic shows up
unexpectedly at Helen's flat?? They sit down in her living room and
there is a wonderful song playing in the background. Would appreciate
any info. Thanks.

Ok gang, bump! <bumpbumpBUMP!>

Nudge.

This is the song playing during S1ep4 scene 1, where Helen gives Dominic a lift:

This is the scene from the original broadcast:

Now, I am not pop-music-girl-maven. But someone out there will know this. Riiiight? (This is a good time to make grateful noises, btw. Feel free to throw Theoretical flowers, bits of chocolate, etc.)

(Ok, ok, I'm not taping these myself but a good friend is, so I'll even share the flowers. Hey! No thumbtacks, that's cheating.)

And... doesn't the scene feel weird after you've seen it with, then without the music? Like, obviously empty? Augh!

Hey e, what's in the clip before I go ahead and download it?

It's a VOB file, it's the opening credits with H driving in to work & Dom picking through Rachel's belongings, up through the photo of Baby Sans Eyeballs. It's simply the clip from the original broadcast, with the original soundtrack--Walking on Sunshine. The first clip is longer, of the intro to ep 4 with an unidentified song. --e

Hey e, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the two versions, the relative merits of the song choices on the original broadcast vs the dvds, what we miss in the dvd version (a level of irony perhaps?). I've never been a viewer particularly attuned to soundtracks (which is strange, because I think of myself as being very musical, but I guess it's because I'm not that into pop music), so I don't necessarily feel qualified to jump in on this subject.

I thank you for asking me (was it my painfully forlorn tumbleweed?) & I'd like to get a discussion going but was hoping to hear from others first (so we're kinda in the same boat) because I'm *so* allergic to this song it's hard to overcome my feelings (apologies, I'm sure there are people on the board who like it, it's just not my thing). But I'm guessing we can agree on this: it's relentlessly chipper. So yeah, as you said, I'd have to say my basic observation stands, Walking on Sunshine seems a deliberate, very heavy-handed bit of irony, given we're talking about the mood after Rachel's death. Presumably part of the idea is that life-goes-on, and things like irritating pop tunes do tend to punctuate things (as it were), like it or not. Ahem.

As for the other tune, I'm really hoping for more help with that from other people, one of the reasons I posted it. The soundtrack is low so you have to turn it way up; it sounds like another diva-type pop-tune to me, I don't imagine its Meaning is very heavy on any measurable scale except subatomic.

But in general, it does seem the music in Helen's apt (during the talk with Sean in ep1--different there too) & throughout, esp around Helen, is, thus far, ALL women's voices. I don't think that's Shed saying anything significant about Helen's sexuality, there are loads of people (especially women) who simply like listening to women sing, & prefer it to men. Most of them are straight. So that's bollocks. But in terms of just kinda... I don't know, texturing, layering the mood? I am finding it oa much subtler, much more effective than the stuff on the DVDs. So now I've got to get myself an Original Broadcast set of discs.

;)

But I knew THAT all along.

ps: JAMBF says the women who sang Walking in Sunshine is a dyke.

I'm still stunned at hearing Walking on Sunshine in that scene. How bizarre. That's from like way back in the early 80s.

So what are we to make of this? :eek

Either Helen listens to the Golden Oldies station and has musical taste stuck back in her teen yrs. (a sign of repressed or arrested development?) or it's just most likely a matter of the morning drive radio programme being all upbeat and hideously chipper (and, therefore, in highly ironic contrast to Dom's sad task.)

This difference in broadcast music as opposed to what is allowed on dvds just hit me again while watching the second season of "Sugar Rush" and just knowing that the David Gray, KT Tunstall, et. al. topical hit songs of the moment in the club scene will never make it to dvd.

It makes a pretty big difference in the way the show feels, to my mind, esp since SR has an almost constant musical soundtrack, and the DVD choices were so lame.

Well, the good news is that this week's clip (from our mystery friend & helper!) is the Constant Craving one. I couldn't get the aspect ratio right on my computer, not a thing I can control or suggest how others might get it looking right. Wound up using Nero Showtime & using their "force aspect ratio" feature; 5:3 (though it's a bogus ratio) did seem to work, fwiw.

File size is ~70meg.

Which scene is this song underscoring? When Helen and Dom are in the bar, or when they are back in her apt? (Sorry, can't download at work to review myself.) If it's the latter, that seems to ssubtly imply that Helen listens to lesbian singers at home. Very interesting....

It's not so subtle. :) Yeah, it's at her place with Dom, when they get back from the bar. And the music track's much louder, actually, than whatever they put into the DVD version: my take is that the music itself features as a kind of third presence here. Given it's a very obvious lesbian marking... I have to think that's deliberate: people may or may not associate what'shername & Walking in Sunshine with lesbians, but lang = lesbian, it's not avoidable.

abzug - October 12, 2006 08:28 PM (GMT)
Thanks! I only said subtle because when you have a song in a scene like that, it can be ambiguous whether the character is listening to it (as Helen was in her car with Walking on Sunshine), or whether it doesn't exist in the scene itself but is setting a mood for the audience (as the same song was when Dominic was cleaning Rachel's stuff). So, it's not like Helen came in and turned on the stereo and this song came out. Hence, some slight ambiguity or subtlety as to whether Helen actually listens to kd lang, or whether the creators wanted the song to represent her unconscious mind.

ekny - October 12, 2006 08:36 PM (GMT)
My impression--watch it & see what you think--is that the music is exactly loud enough to suggest it's been turned on, deliberately, by Helen. I have no opinion as to whether she owns it--turned on a CD--or has on the radio--but I found your divisions of these categories very interesting & hadn't, tb honest, thought of it in those terms. Very little of the other music in this show suggests background music that tells us of a character's mood/thoughts without the character being aware that music is happening in that same environment--I'm sure you could think of an answer but i'm pressed for x at the moment!--so I'm not sure why this scene, an obviously important one, would perhaps be 'downgraded'? if I'm reading you right? to suggest something along those lines. It's possible but they've gone to a lot of trouble to surround H with music, which says to me she likes it--& therefore, likely, chooses it. But feel free to argue me out of it! :) (SFU, for ex, definitely uses music often--most often, in fact--to do double-duty in place of dialogue & to tell us things, often ironic, abt the characters which they themselves don't know; I'm not sure but my overall feeling is BG's treatment of music is far more naturalistic, which would, after all, be in keeping w/the show's general realism over S1-3.)

QUOTE (ekny)

I wouldn't say downgraded, just used differently. :) Either way it seems like a quite significant song choice, that's for sure, reflecting something key about Helen's subconscious. What I'm realizing as we rewatch S1 with a finetooth comb, is that there have been all these aural and visual clues of Helen's impending lesbianism. It's quite fun and rewarding to find them all. :)

Goshdarnit, I can't get this to play like I could with the others. I'm not getting the "open with" options.

But I find it absolutely fascinating that they used that particular song.

Even through the darkest phase
Be it thick or thin
Always someone marches brave
Here beneath my skin

Constant craving
Has always been

Maybe a great magnet pulls
All souls towards truth
Or maybe it is life itself
That feeds wisdom
To its youth

Constant craving
Has always been

The scene is much more compelling with the music, and the sexiness of the song is an interesting juxtaposition of the anxiety of the scene, from Dom's perspective, and Helen's to some extent as well (in the sense of, why do I have to have one more headache to deal with?).

Downloaded the program at www.feedmyipod.com. Download the converter program. I think it's called Videora, if I am not mistaken.

However, I should mention it's not always perfect. It worked well for this small file, but when I convered a similar .VOB file which was MUCH larger (ie an entire ep of WitB), the sync between the video and audio was off. I have no idea why it worked so well on this clip, and not on the WitB ep.

It does do a lovely job of converting .avi files or .ram files into .mp4 files, however, which is it's main purpose, since the video iPod can only play .mp4 files.

For those who are curious about what is in the clip ekny just posted, it's the scene when Helen is at home in workout gear after the boob grab and she and Sean have that weird interaction about whether they're going out to dinner and whether Helen actually wants to get married. The song in the background is "Rescue Me" and the lyrics are strikingly apt:

Sean says to her: Are you alright?
Song lyrics: You gotta come and rescue me.
Sean: You don't seem yourself.
Helen & song lyrics together: I'm fine / Tell me what I should be.
Sean: You're not regretting it already are you?
Song lyric: You gotta come and rescue me.
Helen: Oh don't be stupid.
Song lyric: What do you want me to be?

It's really such wonderful attention to detail, to have this kind of song providing commentary on the subtext in the scene.

Here are the full lyrics for the entire song:
I can't believe I ever let you go
And assumed your heart was broken
I wanted a love where I could come and go
Now the door's no longer open
Why don't you take us back to then
No I'll never hurt you again
Now I know you're all I need
You gotta come on and rescue me (yeah, yeah)
Tell me what I should be, yeah
You gotta come on and rescue me
What do you want me to be? (ahh)
I realised that it's hard to be apart
You discovered it could be easy
And all I think of is why get together to break apart
You wonder why you loved me
You gotta come on and rescue me (yeah, yeah)
Tell me what I should be, yeah
You gotta come on and rescue me
What do you want me to be? (ahh)
Oh you're meaning the world to me
And I just wanna get up (get up), make up (make up)
Only you know how to save me
I need you now I need you baby
We'll live forever under the light of the moon, the stars
All things bright
(Tell me what I should do)
We go together heart and mind, we go together don't you find
(You gotta come on and rescue me)
And if you're ever stuck someday
(What do you want me to be?)
Turn around, call my name shout it out and into the air
I will be, I will be, I will be, I will be there
(You gotta come on and rescue me)

Ah ok, maybe my misunderstanding then. I couldn't get the MP4 file to play on my computer: sound, no picture.

Will post the two funny-looking versions here, picture isn't as important as sound at the moment.

Can you or anyone figure out what's in the background here???

Helen's flat (the Rescue me scene you quoted above):

ETA: ok, one, thanks to the person who found those lyrics, this show is absolutely charmed when it comes to the details. When you've got something working so well it's as if they start sticking together like magic. I don't imagine they edited so those exact lines were intercut with the part of the scene they appear in, there's only so much time in the day, especially for an editor. But they're so perfect it's hard not to think it's deliberate.

Also: this is one of the first times we've heard a guy's voice singing inside H's apartment, yes? (Hard for me to tell, All The Pop Stuff You Kids Listen To Sounds The Same To Me...)

<ouch!>

(no seriously. The music on the radio during ep1 when S calls was some boy-vocalist group, but otherwise it's been women, is that right...?)

Now if we could just know what's up with this other track. My brain thought it caught a strain of Stevie Nicks or possibly Marianne Faithful but they're too distinctive, this is even poppier than Fleetwood Mac.

Re episode 8: I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

(apparently no changes between tv- & dvd-versions.)

------

Episode 9: Music is playing in Lorna's flat as she goes to examine the perfume for Shell. Suggestion has been offered it's Blondie, Nothing is Real but the Girl. If so it's a case of the name of the song itself being more important than the lyrics, in my view.... In any event it's playing very quietly.

Helen's Hangover: LOTS more material here. Suggestion has been made it's Travis' Writing to Reach You in which case I can only, again, marvel at the trouble they've gone to over the smallest detail.

Travis Writing To Reach You

Every day I wake up and it's Sunday <<<--- lyrics audible from here...
Whatever's in my eye won't go away
The radio is playing all the usual
What's a Wonderwall anyway
Because my inside is outside
My right side's on the left side
Cause I'm writing to reach you now but
I might never reach you
Only want to teach you
About you
But that's not you
It's good to know that you are home for Christmas
It's good to know that you are doing well
It's good to know that you all know I'm hurting
It's good to know I'm feeling not so well
Because my inside is outside
My right side's on the left side
Cause I'm writing to reach you now but
I might never reach you <<<--- to about here.
Only want to teach you
About you
But that's not you
And you know it's true
But that won't do
Maybe then tomorrow will be Monday
And whatever's in my eye should go away
But still the radio keeps playing all the usual
And what's a Wonderwall anyway
Because my inside is outside
My left side's on the right side
Cause I'm writing to reach you now but
I might never reach you
Only want to teach you
About you
But that's not you
And you know it's true
But that won't do
And you know it's you
I'm talking to

For the 2 people who are avidly following this riveting thread, an update: I realized we'd (erm... I'd) sort of started in the middle, with the Important changes. As long as I'm doing it (although really, anyone in the universe might be more suited, given my knowledge of pop toons [nil]), I rethunk it & figured Hm, might as well be thorough. (Also the friend who's been helping is still willing to go on helping!)

So over the next few whatevers--days, weeks--we'll try to get the files from eps 1-3 here for you to download as well as the more important ones we've alread posted. There are a lot of very minor/trivial changes, but I figure there is probably at least one other fanatical lurker out there who'll be glad to see 'em.

*** TECHNICAL QUESTION ALERT! ***
The thing is, a lot of *these* files (forthcoming) are almost inaudible. If anyone knows the least little thing about converting VOB files (have used AutoGK in the past, but it works best when you rip from disc with DVD-decrypter first, & hasn't been very helpful here since I don't have any discs to rip from, just VOB files, as received), *or* about how to improve/amplify sound in a file--VOB or otherwise--please write here or PM me. Any/all help appreciated (and rather sincerely needed!)--thanks a lot. --e

This is a great topic. As an American, I've had to go to great lengths to get Seasons 1-3 on DVD, even bought a region 2 player. I thought the music on the show was, well, less than stellar.

Now I see the original music isn't showing up on the DVDs. However, thanks to you I've discovered the band Texas (ironic since that is where I live) and just purchased some songs from itunes.

Thanks again

Glad it's been helpful, the thread was started long ago by others; my friend & I have had fun going on with the 'new' stuff although it's been frustrating too cause a lot of it's so hard to hear. But getting feedback was really nice to wake up to this morning cause the thread's been so quiet I couldn't really even tell if anyone was Out There looking at it! So thanks a lot, really, even 1 person jumping in to say Well *I'm* reading is very encouraging. :) --e

Ep10... this one's very tough, everything's almost totally inaudible. I wish someone would write w/suggestions abt ht jack the volume, or just what's playing if you've got better equipment & software (& ears)...

So anyway, there's:

1) Helen getting dressed

2) Shell's cell w/Fenner beating her up

Bright ideas really, really welcomed here, peeps.

(This download site currently has a really obnoxious piece of advertising, some crap about filling out a 'contest' thing for a computer that keeps blocking the screen. Like all such ads, just close the browser & re-open another window, it'll clear out the cache & you will probably get another, less obnoxious ad which will let you go right ahead w/your download. If not pls try again later, the site's been wiggy all day.)
