Getting a picture off your computer
Putting your own images online.

This is specifically for pictures from a digital camera, but is also relevant for any image you might want to put online that is stored on your PC.

To begin with you need:
Some means to get the pictures from your camera onto the computer – Yes I know, that should be standard, but something’s do need explaining to some people even in the most simple of terms.
You can do this generally one of two ways. The camera will come with a lead and disc that loads a program to download. The other method is by using a memory card in the camera, and if your computer has a card reader, putting the card straight from the camera into the reader and downloading.

A program to resize the pictures.

Please, please, PLEASE do not put full-size photos online! Everyone does not have a high-speed Internet connection, and even those who do may not want to see a 3-megapixel image as soon as they try to see what you have posted.

Realize that even a 1 or 2-megapixel image contains more detail than what can fit on a computer monitor at once without scrolling, so your 3+ mega pixel images are way too big to fit on a web page.

You can resize using a program – and Windows XP has its own program that can be used.

Once you have the image saved, click to open it, and it should open using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (This will show top left).
Now either, click on the second from left to right icon at the bottom (next to blue question mark) or press Ctrl and E together (Ctrl+E)
This opens the image in Paint.

Now, go to the menu and click on the Image command.
From the drop down menu, you will find ATTRIBUTES listed (usually 4th down).
Now click on this and a pop up box opens.
From there, you need to put the following sizes in.
Width: 500
Height: 370 or 390 (see which works best).

These sizes are for standard pictures on the horizontal. If they are on the vertical, then you need to change the width and height numbers around.

Now ensure the UNITS is clicked on the PIXELS command.

So, you have the image now sized and saved.
Now, make sure the image is a JPG or JPEG.
You need to get this online.

You need an online hosting place to link your pictures from – you cannot link directly off your computer.

We recommend Photobucket – although there are others who allow images to be linked from.
Another well known online solution to host pictures from is Imageshack.
Both can be found by doing a search online.

Now, both work on a similar principle to registering for a message board. You need to register with a username and you can get an account.
From there, you need to upload the image – again, Photobucket is pretty easy to use. You simply browse for the image location on your computer and then it uploads from there.

Once you have the image you can link to it.
If you read the instructions on how to use and avatar, this will give you an idea of how to link to the image.
Then use the [ img ] [ / img ] buttons above the main reply box, putting your URL (Website address) for the picture between the two [ img ] boxes.

Your image should now show.
