Growing Pains

Part 1

Helen and Nikki had known each other since their second year at University. A mutual professor, Karen Betts, introduced the two. She thought they would work well together on a project she needed help with. They became fast friends and were soon inseparable, eventually becoming flat mates. Although Helen knew all about Nikki sexuality it never fazed her because she had never seen Nikki with a lover. It was always Helen who had the never-ending line of suitors. That all changed last night when Helen saw Nikki walking hand and hand with a young blonde she did not recognize. Helen did not know what came over her she had never felt so jealous in her life. Who was this woman and why was she so close to Nikki, her Nikki this could not be happening had Nikki found someone, she had to know and she wanted to know now. Helen took a deep breath and marched over to Nikki and her friend. Hiya Nikki I didn’t know you were going out tonight. Nikki looked at Helen smiling, as brown eyes meet green, hi babes I didn’t know I was going out either until Trisha called and asked me out for a couple. Helen mind raced where had she heard that name Trisha Helen continued to look over at the stranger. Nikki said where at my manner Trisha Harris meet Helen Stewart, the love of my life and oh lets not forget the woman who shares your house replied Helen. They tried as hard as they could to keep from laughing but both fell to uncontrollable laughter. Nikki’s friends had never believed that she and Helen were just friends so years ago they decided to stop trying to convince them and it became their little joke. It was a joke they played so much and had been doing so long they just did it out of habit now. They were both laughing so hard neither notice the look of horror on Trisha’s face. Because Helen and Nikki shared a lot of the same classes they would both study late into the night and could be found in bed together on any given morning. So when it was Nikki’s or Helen’s turn to host the early morning study session it was often noted that only one bed had been slept in. Nikki and Helen gave up trying to explain how they feel asleep every night in one room or the other and normally ended up sharing a bed every night. Could it be true had Nikki finally gotten over her. Trisha had not counted on Nikki ever moving on she had planned everything so carefully. She would break up with Nikki early on that way she could have a full University experience sowing all of her wild oats so to speak. That way she would not be a distraction to Nikki keeping her away from her studies. Being careful to run in totally different circle then Nikki but always dropping a card or a call every few months just to keep the lines of communication open. After all Nikki Wade was going to make a great doctor then before graduation she would slowly work her way back into Nikki’s life and take her place as the wife of a brilliant surgeon.

Helen continued to think when suddenly she remembered when she and Nikki had first moved in together all the late night calls from a woman named Trisha. Nikki never talked to Helen about Trisha and Helen never asked all Helen knew that after every phone call from Trisha she would hear the sobs of her friend for hours coming from her Room. Helen had always hated Trisha for hurting Nikki so much. She had to know if this was the same person and if it was why she was suddenly back in Nikki’s life in her life. Much to Trisha’s displeasure Nikki invited Helen to join them for drinks. Helen placed her arm around Nikki’s waist as the three walked to the local pub. Helen ordered and turned her attention back to Trisha. As hard as I try I can not seem to place you Trisha as Nikki and I share all of the same friends are you a student here Helen asked? Trisha looked at Nikki completely surprised that Helen had never heard of her. After what seemed like forever Trisha finally spoke Nikki and I are old friends we came to University together. We grow up together. Helen looked to Nikki for some sign and finally stated Nikki never mentioned that she had an old friend here. Trisha asked how long have you two known each other? It was Nikki who answered Trisha; we meet our second year at Uni’ and moved in together shortly after that Helen said. Trisha realized that Nikki had probably meet Helen soon after she brook up with her. So Helen are you going to be a doctor as well Trisha asked looking Helen’s way? Trisha could not help but notice just how beautiful this woman was and how Nikki stared deeply at her. Helen smiled over at Nikki and said yes Stewart and Wade will soon make our mark on the world Nikki interjected she means Wade and Stewart but she right it won’t be long now and I for one am scared to death. Not me I am so ready for this Helen chimed in I know darling that is why I am so glad we are in this together Nikki said as she took Helen’s hand much to Trisha’s dread.

Part 2

Helen noticed the look on the other woman’s face and took full advantage of it by holding on to Nikki’s hand longer then normal. Trisha’s mind went into overdrive she had to find a way to get rid of this woman regardless of how lovely she seems to be. Wow when Nikki and I were together she never talked about working with a partner she always wanted to work in a hospital setting Trisha said looking at Helen and waiting for a reaction. Helen had her answer this was the women that use to phone Nikki late at night so many years ago, but where had she been for so long? I guess people change as they grow older it was Helen who has shown me that we can do both. Oh I see, and what other plans do you have for your future Helen Trisha was staring directly at Helen now? Helen stared back at Trisha then turned to Nikki letting her hand stroke the side of Nikki’s face for Wade and Stewart to live happily ever after. Nikki said Amen again not noticing the look on Trisha’s face but Helen had a perfect view and it brought a smile to her face. Trisha excused herself to go to the ladies when Nikki notice Helen was staring at her she knew she would want to know why she had never told her about Trisha but she needed time she needed to figure out why she had never told her. Helen on the other hand was staring over Nikki’s shoulder at the entrance to the ladies already having planed her next move when the door open Helen reached over and kissed Nikki on her lips and said I will go and gets the next round taking her hand for good measure making sure Trisha had seen it all. Helen was screaming at herself inside she had never acted this way with any of her ex’s ex. She could not for the life of her understand her behavior but she could not stop herself. She would not let this woman hurt Nikki again. Yes, that had to be it she was protecting her friend. What other reason could there be, she was protecting Nikki?

Helen waited pretending to just notice Trisha will it be one more of the same for you Trisha I will get this round? Trisha just nodded as she watched Helen walk to the bar and Nikki never taking her eyes off her until she returned to the table. Nikki even jumped up to meet her and help her carry over the drinks; this was going to be harder than she had first thought. Trisha knew she would have to find out everything she could about this Helen Stewart before she could make her first move. Trisha continued to watch the couple all night they seem to be really happy together and fit well together. Trisha could not remember a time when Nikki had looked at her as deeply or had hung on her every word as she did with Helen. Trisha also noticed how much they held hands and touched each other often something Nikki had never done with her in public. Nikki hated public displays of affection she could hardly get her to hold her hand when they were out. Trisha had always thought of Nikki as a loved sick puppet one that she alone pulled the strings. How stupid have I been? Could Nikki really be in love with Helen Stewart? I need to get away and think of a way to split these two up for good. Well ladies if you two will excuse me I have to make it an early night, Nic I will call you soon, with that said she bent down and went to kissed Nikki on her lips to Trisha’s surprised Nikki turned her head and she catch her hard on the cheek which brought a smile to Helen face a very upset Trisha turned and left the pub. Nikki and Helen sat in silence as they finished their drinks. Nikki was a brilliant student but she did not have a lot of life experience she had been completely clueless to the game Helen and Trisha had been playing all night. Helen was very aware of this, which made her even more protective of her friend. Friendship is that all she felt for Nikki. Helen had never felt such an intense amount of jealousy for anyone as she did when she saw Nikki with Trisha. She had never been so confused, what now Nikki said tearing Helen from her thoughts? Lets go for a walk I want some fresh air is that ok with you? Sure babe anywhere in particular Nikki asked nope lets just see where we end up Helen said and with that they were off walking hand in hand without even thinking about it. Nikki noticed two of Helen’s friend Dominick and Thomas approaching so she dropped Helen’s hand and continue to walk when Helen realized why Nikki had dropped her hand she quickly took it again much to Nikki’s surprise. Hi Helen Dominick said before he noticed the two hands locked together had the rumors been true all these years. Thomas had always told him that Helen and Nikki were a couple but he would never believe him after all Helen had been dating Sean Parr for a long time he had even seen them out together once about a year ago. Dominic did think it strange that he always saw Nikki and Helen together most days and not ofter with any other people, but he was still not quite ready to believe the rumors. Helen was to beautiful to be one of them. But truth be told Nikki Wade was quit a stunner herself. Thomas always joked that Sean mind was dating Helen but Helen was dating Nikki. In other word Helen was all in Sean’s mind. Hiya Dom, hi Thomas Helen said what are you guy up to Nikki asked trying to fit into the conversation? We are just leaving a party we thought you would be there Helen Sean has been looking for you all night. Helen quickly remembered that was where She was headed when she saw Nikki and Trisha holding hands. I was planning on stopping by but I ran into Nikki and her old friend Trisha we ended up going for drinks instead. You miss one hell of a good party and like I said Sean left early looking for you I’m surprised you haven’t seen him yet Helen. No Dom we haven’t seen Sean but I’m sure I’ll talk to him tomorrow. Thomas spoke up no Hel’s I think he will not stop until he talks to you tonight he was pretty pissed that you weren't there. He kept calling your mobile but you didn't answer so he finally left to look for you. Helen did not acknowledge Thomas’ statement she did not plan on spending time with anyone but Nikki tonight. They said their goodbyes to the guy and continued on their way.

Part 3

Helen and Nikki walked home in silence each in their own thoughts. Helen’s thoughts, daydreams were only of Nikki she could not imagine what her life would be like without Nikki in it she couldn’t help but wonder if Nikki felt the same. Before Helen knew what she had done she stopped turned to Nikki and said just that. Nikki I think I would die if I did not have you to love, to take care of , and to love me unconditionally I guess what I am trying to ask if you would consider being my partner in life as well as business ? Nikki looked at Helen with as much love and confusing as one person could possibly muster. Could it be true was Helen finally saying the words she had wanted to hear for so many years? Helen do you know how long I have waited to hear you say those ones, I have loved you since the first moment our eyes meet all those years ago. It was Nikki’s words and her hand gently shaking her arm that brought Helen back to reality. Where were you? You looked a million miles away, without another thought Helen pulled Nikki to her for the most passionate kiss she had every had. It was not until they pulled apart totally breathless they Helen’s mind clicked and she realize she had not said any of those words out loud to Nikki. They stood frozen staring into each others eyes when they heard Helen there you are I have been looking for you all night. Sean Parr turned his attention to Nikki, do you mind Helen and I have to talk. To Sean and Helen’s surprise Nikki answered Sean yes I do Helen and I are in the middle of something that we need to finish right now she will call you tomorrow and with that Nikki took Helen’s hand and started up the stairs to their apartment.

Sean stood trapped at that spot when his male ego took over I’ll give the girls an hour or so to work out their little tiff and then I’ll go and collect Helen. I’ll grab a couple of drinks at the pub that should give them enough time. When Sean entered the pub he saw his friends Dom and Thomas as the bar so he joined them. Hey fellows Sean said as Thomas turned to see who had called his name. Both Dom and Thomas nodded in response to Sean, by now Thomas had way to much to drink that plus the fact he never liked Sean decided to have a little fun at Sean’s expense. So did you every find Helen Thomas asked Sean, yea we are getting together in a little bit. Really cause when we saw her and Nikki earlier she did not look like she would be going anywhere without Nikki. Not that again Thomas they are just friend how many times do I have to tell you that. It was Dominick who chimed in this time I have to agree with him Sean they were walking hand and hand laughing when we saw them. Helen said she had gone for drinks with Nikki and her friend Trisha instead of joining you at the party. Helen never dropped Nikki’s hand the hold time we talked and they walked away still holding hands. That’s because they had nothing to hide girls do those types of things all the time it doesn’t mean anything Sean shoot back at them. Have you ever seen them do it before Thomas asked and you said just last week that Helen was not acting the same, that you hardly see her anymore? With that said Sean went quite and deep in thought. Helen hardly called him anymore and when she did she was normally returning his call. She was always making excuses why they could not see each other mostly school work with finals so close and this being their finally year it had all made sense but now he was not so sure. In all honesty he had not seen Helen at all in over a month . He might have had three or four five minute conversations with her during the same time frame. That is why seeing her tonight at the party had been such a big deal. Sean was thinking of it as a new beginning he has got to get Helen moving toward the church and fast his mother was already asking about the invitations. How many girls have you dated for three years who has her own apartment but has never let you stay over and who had never stayed all night with you. Our Helen has always got to be back in her own bed before Nikki wakes up Even on weekend and holiday breaks. And as far as I know Nikki does the came. They have never spent the night apart since they have been living together unless their on holiday. Sean how do you explain that? Sean was getting a headache every thing Thomas had said was true. He had tried not to think about it before but once it had been very late when they got back from a party and he had asked to spend the night because his apartment was so far away he even offered to sleep on the couch but Helen told his no. Even after he begged for half and hour she told him he could have been home by now instead of arguing with her, when he asked if he could talk to Nikki and ask her Helen became angry and told him to leave. Thomas’ words had really gotten to him he continued to order drink after drink trying to figure it out. Dom said what about last week when you went all over London picking up apartment guides to give to Helen so that the two of you could find a flat that was close enough to both of your jobs to find out that Helen and Nikki had already made an offer on a place close to their new offices. Finally it all came to him he and Helen had never spoke of a future that included him. Hell if he was honest he and Helen had never even slept together everyone just assumed that a couple dating three years would have an active sex life. It had always been Helen and Nikki, their practice, their flat close by the office and an apartment closed to the hospital when they had tuff cases and had to stay close by. Once Sean had looked in Helens’ day planner trying to find and open date they could go out when he noticed that everyday there was thirty minutes blocked off to call Nikki, everyday. When he had shown the apartment hunters guides to Helen she asked him why he would need so many as his new job provides an apartment. It was suddenly becoming clear to Sean he had been living in a dream world. He had thought Helen to be the perfect girlfriend she never asked him a lot of questions, never gave him any static about hanging out with the boys as a matter of fact she never nagged him at all. She was beautiful and she was going to be a doctor. What else could any man want. But now he realized that was exactly what Helen was a “Girl Friend not a girlfriend”. When he had wrote about Helen to his mother she had been very pleased he even included a picture of the two of them. His only complaint to his parents was they did not spend a lot of time together because Helen was always studying she would probably finish 1st in her class. Not giving them a lot of time to get to know each other. Sean remembered a call he received from his father telling him he should make Helen his public priority and be very discreet with whom ever he choose to take care of his personally needs until Helen was finished with her studies. After all it will be a feather in our cab at the country club to add a doctor to our family. Sean needed to talk to Helen and he needed to talk to her tonight. He couldn’t let his parents down he had to marry Helen. Sean suddenly realized there was only six months left before graduation and he was no closer to Helen then he had been three years ago on their first date. She had repeatedly turned down invitations to go on holidays with his family. He was so desperate once he even invited Nikki to come but they decided to go hiking together instead, How could I have missed all the signs Helen had always picked spending time with Nikki over me or anyone else for that matter. Sean had dropped the ball he was having so much fun with his discreet friend Trisha and the rest of the party group that he had just enough classes for a degree he thinks it’s in gardening along with Trisha‘s since she had always do his work. His mother would not be pleased Sean was their last hope for a good showing he had to marry Helen or someone like her and fast.

Part 4

Nikki’s hand shook as she placed the key in the door to their apartment. She did not know what would happen once she and Helen were inside but she was about to find out. They had walked in silence the rest of the way to the apartment. Nikki had convinced herself that Helen and Sean had argued that’s why Helen had shown her so much attention but then she remembered Thomas and Dom had both said that Helen had not seen Sean tonight again she was confused. As a matter of fact Helen had been with her everyday and every night for a long as she could remember. She could not remember a night they had not shared dinner together in several months whether they were studying or not. Nikki opened the door and stood aside as Helen walked in behind her. Nikki turned to see what direction Helen would take, would she go to her room or would she sit in the living room to talk. Nikki was not expecting Helen to take her hand and lead the way to Nikki's room. Don’t forget to lock the door Nikki turned around and did just that. Helen quickly lay on the bed pulling Nikki down on top of her. Three very passionate kisses later Helen turned to Nikki and asked any more questions? Nikki stared into Helens eyes for what seemed like an eternity and began to slowly unbutton Helen’s blouse.

Nikki felt like she was dreaming this couldn‘t be real not after all these years she was finally making love to Helen and it was Helen who had started it. Nikki was in heaven as her lips, her hands, her eyes touched every part of Helen’s body. Helen’s mine screamed with every touch from Nikki she could never have imagined being with Nikki would make her feel like this. Helen had never felt so complete in her life she had never felt this much love for a single person she had to tell Nikki what she was doing to her. Nikki heart swelled as Helen called out her name as her body took her to places she had never ventured before. Nikki I fill like I have never been made love to before now. I have never felt so extremely happy in my life and with that Helen turned the tables on Nikki looking down at her I want to make you feel the same. Nikki was already so aroused that it took Helen a very short time to bring her to climax. They lay holding each other so tightly it was hard to breathe but neither wanted to let go. Helen I don’t know what to say did you and Sean have a fight is that what this is about. Helen shot up looking at Nikki as the tears rolled down her face. Nikki how could you say that to me after what just happened between us? I just told you that I was in love with you why, how could you think this had anything to do with Sean or anyone else? Do you think I am so shallow I don’t know what I feel? Was this just sex to you, is that why you did not tell me you loved me back? Helen stood to leave when Nikki jumped up to stop her. Helen please don’t leave I am so sorry I never meant to hurt you, but in all of the years we have been together you never spoke to me other than friendship and in the course of a very few hours you are sharing my bed and professing your love for me what was I suppose to think you did not drink that much tonight so I knew it was not that and you did not go to the party like you had planned once you saw me with Trisha.

With that said it was like a light bulb went off in Nikki head…Trisha. Helen does this have anything to do with you seeing me with Trisha? Helen turned her head and would not look at Nikki. Nikki slowly turned Helens face towards her please answer me Helen. I don’t know how to Nikki all I know is everything that happened tonight is for real everything I said to you is how I feel I am not sorry for making love to you Nikki I wanted to then and I want to now with that said Helen closed the gap between them and took Nikki lips into a powerfully blistering kiss. Nikki pushed Helen back onto the bed well in that case I think it’s my turn again Helen answered I think we can find a way we can do it together don’t you Helen was all Nikki could say.

Part 5

Sean had far too many drinks but he was determined to prove Thomas wrong he had to see Helen and straighten this out tonight. Helen was his and his alone. She was not some dirty dyke Helen was nothing like Nikki Wade. Sean was so drunk he went to the wrong apartment and when a man answered he started shouting at him demanding to know what he was doing at Helen’s apartment. He caused such a ruckus security had to be called they took him away to sleep it off for the night. The next morning Nikki woke to the most gorgeous green eyes, so full of love, looking up at her that she felt tears swell in her eyes. Hello gorgeous hello yourself Helen replied. Nikki last night was amazing you were amazing you were pretty amazing yourself Helen. Nikki pulled Helen towards her for a loving embrace. Nikki what happens to us now, I can never go back to the way we were before; I want to belong to you completely mind, body and soul. That’s great Helen because I have belonged to you since the first day we meet. You are my soul mate Helen. Have you never wondered why I never dated anyone or why I have hated every guy you dated. I always thought it was because of your studies and that you were just being overly protective. Since we are being honest have you never notice that since we have lived together I have never had anyone stay over nor have I spent one night away from you at someone else apartment. Even when I had late night study session I always had you come and pick me up and make sure I was tucked in my own bed. Have you never noticed that the only bed other then mind I have slept in since we’ve moved together is yours. Nikki I have not given myself to anyone else since we moved in together I promise. I always thought you were being protective of my felling since you never saw me with anyone. You mean like I was last night with Trisha? Nikki I was not being protective I was jealous as hell and I hated Trisha for the way she treated you all those years ago. I did not think you knew, I did was all Helen said. But what about Trisha, why is she suddenly back in you life now? Trisha thinks I’m stupid, the only reason she wants back in my life is because it’s time for graduation and I’ve made it soon I will be Dr. Nicola Wade what women doesn’t want a dashing doctor by her side. Trisha’s just looking for an easy life one she won’t get from me. I’m to scared of your Scottish temper to cheat on you plus I love you way to much. Either that or I’m crazy I waited for five years for just one kiss I’d say I love you desperately wouldn’t you I guess I’m no different then Trisha Nikki said what do you mean asked HelenI want a gorgeous doctor on my arm and in my heart too. I love you to Nikki Wade, not half as much as I love you Helen Stewart-Wade. Nikki had said it and she could not take it back Helen looked at Nikki a long time and finally she said it looks like our clinic just got a new name how does Wade and Wade sound to you. Perfect just perfect Nikki said as she took Helen in her arms.

After making love for what seemed like hours Nikki finally said time to come up for air Stewart I am starving yea me to. Do you want to go out or order take away. Let’s take a shower and think about it Nikki, said only if you promise to wash my back Helen jumped out of bed and ran for the shower. Nikki shouted at her does that mean you are showing with me; get your butt in here now Wade Helen shouted back in between fits of laughter. I love it when you bossy. Nikki’s heart was so full she could hardly hold back the tears. She had never dreamed of every being this happy. Not on her best day did she allow herself to believe Helen would ever return her feeling and today Helen had made her the happiest woman in the world by agreeing to be her wife. Nikki and Helen zest for each other lasted a lot longer than the hot water. After making love over and over that exited the shower looking for nourishment. So what’s it going to be are we ordering or going, I don’t know about you Nikki but I don’t want to share you with anybody today so I vote for take out, well take out it is. Helen lay with her head in Nikki’s lap as they waited on the couch for their food to arrive I can’t believe this day has finally come I can’t believe I have you Nikki said. I can’t believe it took me so long to see what was right in front of me Helen said in return. Remind me so send Trisha a dozen roses tomorrow, what Helen said sitting up you’re right I should make it two dozen if she had not shown up when she did I might still be waiting for you to come to your senses. Nikki laughed as Helen punched her in the arm. Just them the door bell rang that was really fast you get the door Helen and I’ll get my wallet. Helen opened the door expecting her dinner but found a smiling Trisha followed by Sean coming up the stairs. Nikki, Helen called, we have company yea who is it as she entered the room.

Part 6

Hi Helen are you going to let us in? Trisha you really should have called first Nikki and I were not expecting company today we have a lot of studying to complete so I'm afraid not and Helen closed the door before Trisha could protest any further. Sean yelled up to Trisha, as he rounded the last step, why haven't you rang the bell, why are you still standing in the hall? Because she closed the door in my face you idiot, she won't let us in. What don't play games Trisha Helen would never do that not in a million years. Well she just did Sean she just did. Sean knocked on the door once, twice and then a third time with no answer he began to yell for Helen to open the door. Trisha begged Sean to stop she did not want to see the Wade temper today she knew Sean was too much of a wimp to handle Nikki when she was calm he had no chance when she was angry. Trisha stepped away from Sean and called Nikki on her cell phone, she did not expect Nikki to answer but she had to leave a message to let her know how Helen had treated her when she dropped by. Hello Wade here, Trisha was shocked when she heard Nikki's voice, hi Nikki its Trisha where are you, are you at the library studying? I dropped by your place and Helen would not let me in because she was studying, I should have known you weren't there you would never let anyone treat me that way. Nikki hung up the phone and turned to Helen if you and I are together we need to handle this now. I am not going to try and avoid these two for the next six months Helen. With that said Nikki opened the door to a screaming Sean. Sean what is your problem did Helen not tell you she did not want to see you today. Sean totally dismissed Nikki pushed her aside entering the apartment yelling Helen's name.

Trisha was a lot smarter than Sean she knew when to pick her battles and this was definitely not the time to confront Nikki so she silently slipped down the stairs to fight another day. Helen had gone to her room to change clothes when she heard Sean yelling, just as she went to open the door Sean barged in knocking her off balance. Sean what the blood hell are you going on about and why are you in my room? Better yet how did you know this was my room? The other bed room door was open I did not see you in there so I tried the next door. Sean for the last time what are you doing here in my room? I told you last night I needed to talk to you, but you just left me there and walked off with Nikki. You did not call after you finished talking to Nikki so I came to talk. Helen we have some important decisions to make. My mother is really pressuring me about our invitations. What kind of invitations Sean, Nikki asked Helen and Sean had not noticed her standing in the door? Wedding invitations of course what other kind are there? Both Helen and Nikki screamed what at the same time. And just who are you marring and why would you need to talk to me about it Helen said giving Sean a look of death? Helen you and I have been going out for three years now and we are graduating soon it is time to take the next step. Helen was so angry she came within one inch of Sean's face why you arrogant bastard I went to dinner with you a couple of times, I studied with you to help you with a test and last but not least I rode with you to a party because Nikki did not want to go. I have never agreed to date you; I never told you I had any type of feeling toward you at all, hell Sean I have never even kiss you on the mouth why would you tell your parents we were getting married? Is that why you insisted I meet your parents when they came up and you had me take pictures with them. Sean tell me you did not bring them up to meet me? Guilty as charged Helen I just knew that would love you as much as I do. Mom called and said the country club was booking up quick and she really needed to give them a date so I told her the third Saturday in August I hope that is enough time, that should give you and Nikki two months to plan everything. Me, leave me out of this Sean I want nothing to do with your fantasy. Nikki what are you talking about you are Helen's best friend you have got to help her with her wedding.
