Five Years And Counting


Nikki woke with a huge smile on her face; today was her fifth anniversary. It is five years today since she left Larkhall. Nikki felt the words vibrating in her head as if it was yesterday, Nicola Wade you are free to go. Nikki knew Helen was planning something big, she could just tell. She thought back over all the surprises of the last five years each year gets bigger and better than the one before. The first year Helen took her to San Francisco, year two they brought their home, year three Helen took her to Scotland to her childhood home to meet her family and the biggest of all year four Helen gave Nikki her family back. She brought her mom, dad and even her brother and his wife to their home for dinner and a reunion. To this day Nikki is not quite sure how Helen pulled that one off, but she is so happy she did. Nikki had all but giving up on ever seeing her family again. Now both Nikki and Helen had their families back in their lives. It is going to be hard to beat last year; Nikki could not wait to see just what Helen had in store.

Helen was to excited to sleep she had been up for hours taking care of all the last minute arrangement, today was the day. This would be the best day of Nikki’s and her life together thus far. Helen had been planning this surprise for over six months there was nothing left to chance. Today is the day she would make Nikki Wade her wife. So much had changed in her life since Nikki had been set free. With the help of Karen Betts’ she was able to rid herself of all the demons Jim had caused both of them. Together they were able to put a hole in the good old boys network. Helen and Karen managed to form a very strong friendship as well. However, Helen always felt Karen was holding something back, something big she just did not know what. Karen and Nikki had also become close friends they went out together regularly. Karen would even accompany Helen and Nikki to the club or parties but she would never bring a date even though they told her it was ok, they did not have anything against men Karen always came alone. Even when Karen had everyone over to her flat, she would never invite a date. One night as they were all sitting around drinking after dinner Claire asked Karen why she never brought her dates around them a very drunken Karen told them it will not be long now ladies I promise you it will not be much longer and that is all I am going to say. Nikki shouted pay up I told you she is much too happy not to be shagging somebody. Hell after five years she would be crazy by now, everyone laughed until tears rolled down their faces.

Karen was the wedding planner so to speak and a very good one at that. Helen had no idea just how well Karen had done with the guest list. She even found some old guards like Dominic and Josh that Helen was not even looking for she had found nearly every friend Nikki and Helen every came into contact with at Larkhall. Denny Blood and Jessie Devlin would be there. Helen had Denny do a special painting for Nikki as a wedding present. Crystal and Josh, Monica, Dominic, Barbara and of course the two Julies and David were all invited. Helen would purposely leave three empty chairs for Yvonne, Shaz, and Zandra; she knew Nikki would like that. She even sent Yvonne’s daughter Lauren and invitation. They also invited Lorna Rose they had a long talk with her and realized she was just a young officer who ended up in a bad situation. Helen got Claire to represent her and she received one-year probation and spent three months at Monica’s half way house. She runs a program for youth offenders through one of Barbara‘s halfway houses now. Helen could not wait to see the look on Nikki’s face when she saw all her old friends in one place again.

Karen was being so secretive she even had a special box for the RSVP’s to be delivered she said that way Nikki could not see one by accident. Each day the list got longer Karen would update Helen on her side of the guest list…but unknown to Helen she and Nikki were not the only ones getting married that day. Even with the double surprise, everything was still going swimmingly the guest lists were still very similar. That was until two months ago when a very long faced Trisha showed up at Karen’s office needing a girl talk. It seemed every since Helen had come up with the hole marriage ideal Claire has been a little down. Do not get me wrong Claire is very happy for Nic and Helen but I think she wishes it was us. And you Trisha what do you want? That is when Karen saw the little red box in Trisha‘s hand. Oh, I see; when we were out looking at rings with Helen, I kept noticing Claire’s eyes going back to this one. Now that you have the ring, what are you going to do about it? That is rather where I thought you would come in. To Karen’s woe, the double wedding just became a triple. It really would not change things much since both she and Claire were standing up for Helen and Trisha would be there for Nikki so again everything was still on schedule. Karen calmed Trisha down by explaining just that. First, they had to clear everything with Helen after all this was still her party. There is no time like the present lets give her a ring and see if she can bounce down. Both Helen and Karen work in the same office building for area management. Helen is the Regional Director for the Lifers Unit and Karen is the Director of Women’s Services. Helen answered on the first ring sure; I will be right around give me about five minutes. As soon as Helen hit the door Trisha pleaded her case, Karen explained that it did not change things much. Helen laughed the hardest part for her would be not telling Claire after all the wedding was still two months away, this was going to be a mighty big secrete to keep from her best friend.

Nikki would be up soon Helen had to hurry home. Is that you babe Helen heard her name as she walked thought the door? Nikki had learned all to well not to ask Helen too many questions on this day even though she ached to ask, where she had been she knew better. Helen could not believe it was a quarter past nine already. She had so much left to do. Her mobile was ringing off the hook as the quest arrived at the hotel. Claire and Trisha had saved her sanity. Helen sat smiling to herself as she remembered a party three years earlier both Trisha and Claire had gotten pissed so she and Nikki decided to play a trick on them. They stripped them and put them in the spare room together. It turned out the joke was on them they have not been apart since. Claire was playing taxi for Helen all day while Trisha took care of the caterers making sure everything ran smoothly. Nikki was beginning to wonder just what Helen was up to unlike years past they had been up and at them at the crack of dawn it was well past one and they had not left the house. What you fancy for dinner Helen asked as Nikki turned to face her, not sure babe what about you? Helen stood walking toward Nikki I know exactly what I want the smirk on Helen’s face said it all. Helen took Nikki’s hand and took her to the bedroom. Helen knew Nikki’s body so well she knew just where and how to touch her to get her going quickly. She wanted Nikki’s mind completely off this evening event, making love to Nikki also kept her from being so nervous.

After what seemed like hours, Nikki was starving. So babe what is for dinner I am starving want to order take away? No, we have been in the house all day I want to go out, come take a shower with me and we can go out. Helen put on a pair of jeans and a red shirt Nikki followed suit. She knew how busy Helen had been with work but she could not believe Helen had forgotten her anniversary she was very disappointed. How about a movie after dinner, what do you think? Fine what ever you want Nikki replied. Nikki and Helen had just left the house when Helen’s mobile rang can you get that for me sweetheart, it’s Claire she says they are at happy hour over at The Crown Plaza Hotel they want us to join them. Ask if they have a nice restaurant. They do great we are on our way we will meet you in about twenty minutes. Four twenty five right on time Helen was very pleased with herself. Nikki did not suspect a thing the next hour would be the hardest part to pull off especially if the wedding was to start at 7:00 sharp. They still had to eat dinner, Helen had to some how slip the ring in Nikki dessert and propose. After Nikki says yes, Trisha had to get Nikki up to her room to change and get ready and back down stairs to the ballroom all by 7:00.

Part 2

Helen, saw the hotel coming into view just in time to see Monica and Barbara getting out of their car she had no choice but to pretend to miss her turn trying to stall. She hoped Nikki had not been paying attention. Helen you just missed our turn Nikki said looking back pointing to the Hotel ok I will make a u-turn and head back. Helen pulled into valet and went to find Claire. We had to make a reservation we are up in about twenty minutes Claire said as she greeted them. We are quite a few ahead of you so we got you a couple of doubles to catch up. Here Helen down the hatch and this one for you Nikki Trisha said as she passed the drinks out. Helen almost pied in her pants when she saw Nikki’s ring in the bottom of her glass. Are you all right Helen Nikki asked? She just missed Helen palming the ring. Yea, babe I am fine but look at the sign over there it seems we have to change our closes and dress up a bite in order to eat here. Good thing the girls had planed to stay the night you go up with Trisha and change and I will grab one more while I wait on Claire to finish hers off, see you in a sec ok. Nikki had the biggest smile on her face as she and Trisha went to change Helen did not forget after all. Trisha had just given Helen the perfect way to give Nikki the ring. Trisha gave Nikki another stiff drink and all was well. Nikki never was much of a drinker she did not notice Trisha cutting the tags off her new Armani suite. With Nikki all changed, makeup spotless and laid across the bed Trisha took off her coat did a few touch ups and she was ready to go. She slipped into the bathroom to call Claire and make sure everything was a go on their end. Trisha was on her third try and still no answer something had gone wrong but what? She went over the plan repeatedly in her head oh shit she forgot to water down the vodka bottle in Claire’s room and time was slipping away. Trisha knew she needed reinforcement Claire and Helen had to be sloshed. Trisha called Monica and Barbara and got then over to the room to help Claire. The cavalry got them dressed and down stairs with ten minutes to spare Barbara even got the Julies to get them a bite to eat to help dull the alcohol after all it was almost 6 and they still had to get through dinner and propose. Monica made a quick call to Trisha to let her know all was well and to hurry up. Trisha made sure she had Claire’s ring, woke Nikki up and headed downed to the restaurant. Wow, you look great Nic I like you hair Trisha said as she tried to rid Nikki of the cobwebs; oh, there they are over there. Nikki said I really do need to eat I do not even remember getting dressed. Trisha just how much did I drink you look great by the way and so do Claire and Helen we had better get over there before someone stashes them up Nikki laughed. I could not agree with you more and I am starving.

Part 3

Helen took one look at Nikki and had to fight back the tears she could not believe the effect Nikki still had on her after all these years. She stills gets the same funny filling in her stomach every time she sees her all dressed up. You look gorgeous Nikki Helen said as she took her seat. So do you babe if I did not know better I would have to swear Trisha dressed me because I do not remember anything hardly since I saw you last. Helen smirked, good I most have done a good job earlier then everyone laughed as Nikki blushed. Claire chimed in right on time we were starving I hope you do not mind we went ahead and ordered for you; food should be here soon. Great I am starving Trisha said me to added Nikki. Just then, the waiter brought over a bottle of white wine Helen wanted to make sure Nikki could see the ring. Trisha gave out a sigh of relieve she had hoped Helen had not ordered anything dark.

The meal arrived and everything was going great until the waiter came to take the plates away and Helen suddenly got extremely nervous. She could not think what was she suppose to do now. She had originally planned to slip the ring in Nikki’s dessert so how was she going to get the ring in Nikki’s glass without her seeing her. At the other side of the table Trisha’s mind was racing as well she knew she could not upstage Helen after all this was her idea but what was Helen waiting on it was almost 7. Claire saw the look on her friends face and asked Nikki to dance, Helen mouthed thank you, with that, problem solved. As soon as Nikki and Claire headed for the dance floor, Helen and Trisha grabbed for their partner’s wine glass. What do we do now? I was thinking when they get back I would propose a toast and from there it is every woman for themselves unless you had something bigger planed. Trisha I could just kiss you I was really beginning to brick it. Ok, fill the glasses they should be back soon. Oh shit here they come it is now or never without thinking Helen downed her glass Trisha’s hand was shaking so much she almost spilled the bottle trying to fill Helen’s glass again.

As soon as Nikki and Claire returned to the table, Trisha raised her glass a toast to good friends and love. Helen raised her glass, Nikki took a drink, and Claire’s eyes froze as she noticed the ring at the bottom of her glass. Helen stared at Nikki waiting on her to find the ring. Nikki noticed that she was the only one drinking do I have something on my face as she noticed Helen staring at her. Nikki was just about to put the glass on the table when she saw the sparkle of the diamonds. Helen took Nikki glass, took the ring out and placed it on her hand. Nikki I was wondering what you had planed for the rest of your life. Tears rolled down Nikki’s face I knew you would never forget I love you Helen. I will take that as a yes then Ms. Wade oh defiantly as a YES Ms. Stewart. Claire did not give Trisha a chance to say anything she took the ring out of the glass. How could you know, when did you, this is exactly the ring I wanted. Trisha said I love you Claire Walker it is my job to know as she placed the ring on her finger. The happy couples exchanged congregations and cried for what seemed like hours until both Trisha’s and Helen’s mobile began to ring bringing them back to reality. Helen and Trisha were so happy to have the hard part over that had completely forgotten about time it was already ten after seven.

Right we have to go; we are already late. So is this why you insisted I wear the dress Claire asked Trisha of course I did not want you to be late to your own wedding, what? Come on you heard the woman we are late.

Part 4

Helen grabbed Claire’s hand and took her to the side door of the ballroom to the dressing room where a very nervous Karen waited for them as Trisha and Nikki went across the hall. I thought I was going to have to come and get you two. Karen, what you to, am I the only one who did not know I was getting married today? Pretty much Karen said turning to Helen so you pulled it off ok I cannot wait to hear all about it later but right now are you ready? Karen you have no idea Helen said. Ok you two have to give me a minute to catch my breath you have had months to get use to this what am I suppose to do now. Look Claire, Karen said everything is exactly as we rehearsed only now you get to say I do. Claire looked over to Helen who was nodding her head. Helen you could never keep a secret how did you manage to keep this from me. Trisha loves you and I know you love her and right now, I am late for my wedding we have to get a move on.

Across the hall three doors down Nikki was grinning ear to ear while a very nervous Trisha paced the floor. So this is my big surprise one of the most special days of my life is about to take on a completely new meaning. Today Helen becomes my wife. Trisha how long do we have what time does it start Trisha, Trisha are you ok? What, oh I am sorry Nic what did you say? Before Nikki could, answer there was a knock on the door and Barbara walked in. Nikki ran and took her in her arms it is all coming true Barbara just like you said soul mate are for real. Nikki I am so happy for you and Helen and you too Trisha I have come to get you it is time to get started. Nikki could barely hold back the tears as she stepped into the ballroom full of familiar faces, but the biggest surprise of all was Helen’s dad waiting to marry them. Nikki gave James Stewart a big hug and turned to face the crowd. Trisha pointed to the piece of tape on the floor as she took her place next to Nikki. Nikki quickly caught on and took her position as the music began to play.

Monica was passing out flowers to Karen, Claire and Helen when she noticed the beautiful ring on Karen’s left hand. Karen I did not know congratulations were in order for you to your ring is beautiful thanks Monica but I think that is our cue Karen said trying to get out of the room before either Claire or Helen could respond. Helen gave Claire a quick hug and they went to take their places behind Karen. Karen was scared to death talk about a coming out party everyone was in for one hell of a shock. The doors to the ballroom opened and the wedding song began to play well I guess there is no backing out now Karen thought as she marched down the ile followed my Trisha and Helen.

Part 5

Good evening everyone and please be seated. My name is James Stewart, I am Helen’s father, and I have the special honor of performing the ceremonies today. Yes, I did say ceremonies even though each of you received an invitation to a single wedding there is more than one ceremony today. By way of explanation, some of the women up here did not know they were getting married today until about an hour ago so we hope that helps to explain the secrecy. With that said, the ceremony began. Karen was sure everyone in the ballroom could hear her heart pounding as Rev. Stewart finished his speech the lights began to dim the side door opened and out stepped Yvonne taking her place next too Trisha and Nikki.

The room was a buzz as everyone whispered and pointed to Yvonne. Yvonne looked over to Nikki smiled and gave her a wink hey mate how is it going? Nikki and Helen were no different from the rest of the guess they looked at Yvonne, back to each other and back to Yvonne again. Helen and Nikki had been gone from Larkhall a little over a year when they got the message that Yvonne had died, that was four years ago. Nikki could not take it anymore she took Yvonne into her arms for the biggest hug of her life. Claire, recognized Yvonne from the newspaper, but Trisha had no clue who this woman standing next to her was. Karen nodded toward Rev. Stewart he silenced the crowd and the ceremony began again. Each woman took two-step forward taking her partner's hand. We are here today to celebrate the victory of love. Today we witness three couples commit their lives to each other. We have watched friendships grow, wounds heal and love began and today they approach new heights on their journey to everlasting happiness.

Do you Helen Elizabeth Stewart take Nicola Jane Wade to be your loyal and loving wife from this day forward to death do you part. Oh yes I do Helen answered. Do you Nicola Jane Wade take Helen Elizabeth Stewart to be your loyal and loving wife from this day forward till death do you part. Nikki answered a very quick I do.

Nikki squeezed Helen's hands and stared into her beautiful green eyes as she began her vows. Helen I have loved you since the first day I saw you. The love we share is no ordinary Love. I never believed in soul mates until you came into my live. Helen you have always been my hope. Before I had you, I was a loss soul full or anger and hurt. You gave me my life back and taught me how to live again. Helen I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to raise a family with you. Helen I will Love you through out eternity.

Helen had to take a deep breath before she could speak, as the tears rolled down her face. Nikki what I feel for you is so strong it took over my very soul. I hear you thoughts, I fell your heart beating even when we are not together. I was so afraid of loving you; I pushed you away time and time again. I thought if I denied my felling long enough they would go away. I was so afraid of not being normal that I ran as far as I could inside myself trying to hide my true felling from you. But you saw right through me thank you Nikki for not giving up on me. Oh, Nicola I love you so much and today I am able to love you openly and honestly the way you deserved to me loved. Nicola Jane Wade I will love you forever until the end of time.

Rev Steward looked toward Trisha. Do you Trisha Rebecca Harris take Claire Rose Walker to be your loyal and loving wife from this day forward to death do you part. Trisha said I do. Do you Claire Rose Walker take Trisha Rebecca Harris to be your loyal and loving wife form this day forward until death do you part? I will was Claire's reply.

Claire I never thought I would find real love again, but you took my heart by storm. You are the easiest person in the world to love. Babe you make me fill like I can take on the world and win. Claire I want to spend the rest of my existence loving you. Claire you are the best thing in my life.

Trisha when you put this ring on my finger today it was as if you had seen my dreams. I have dreamed of being your wife for so long. You make my life complete. I do not know if I could go on without you. Trisha you are the very air I breathe. Sweetheart I want to spend the rest of my life showing you how much you mean to me.

Karen felt her knees go weak as she heard Rev Stewart call her name. Do you Karen Michelle Betts take Yvonne Lauren Atkins to be your loyal and loving wife from this day forward to death do you part? I do said Karen. Do you Yvonne Lauren Atkins take Karen Michelle Betts to be you loyal and loving wife from this day forward until death do you part? I do was Yvonne's reply.

Yvonne took a very deep breath; Karen nothing in my life prepared me to love you. I was as surprised as those people out there were to see me today. My feeling for you hit me like a ton of bricks. I tried so hard to convince myself I was confused it was because I was locked up in that place. When you took me to the hospital to see my son you treated me like a real person and our friendship grew from there. I began to look forward to our nightly talks they became the highlight of my day. Then you took complete control of my thoughts, of my dreams, of my soul. I stand here today in front of my daughter and all of our friends I give you my promise to love you until time stands still.

Yvonne, surprise was not a strong enough word to describe what I felt the first time I realized I love you. To be honest I thought she is going to kill me, but I knew I had to tell you. When I was going through all the problems from my previous relationship the only time I felt save was when I was with you. I would have ended up being your roommate at Larkhall if you had not used your contacts to get information for me. You stuck by me the whole time and never let me give up hope. Von I promise to be your best friend, to support you and to love you until time is no more.

Do you have the rings Rev Stewart asked? The Brides all nodded yes. These rings are symbols of commitment, honor, love and fidelity. It is a symbol of unity in which your lives will forever be joined in an unbroken circle. Karen, Claire, and Helen repeat after me; I give you this ring to wear upon your finger as a symbol of our everlasting unity. Then it was Yvonne, Trisha and Nikki's turn. As much as these couple have pledge, their undying love before God and this congregation is there anyone present who can present reason why any of these couples should not be joined in matrimony do so now or forever hold your peace. If there are no objections by the powers vested in me I now present to you the families of Yvonne & Karen Betts-Atkins, Trisha & Claire Walker-Harris and Nikki & Helen Stewart-Wade Ladies you may kiss your brides. The ballroom went wild everyone stood up and cheered. Helen kissed her father and hugged the other brides. The music started the new brides made their way down the aisles to meet their friends.

The brides stood in the reception hall greeting their guess and congratulating each other repeatedly. Nikki looked into Helen's eyes I can't believe we are married and you were able to keep this a secret from me for so long. Helen pulled Nikki into a very passionate kiss. Hey, save some for the honeymoon Yvonne shouted at them. Hearing Yvonne voice quickly brought Helen and Nikki back to reality. Talk about keeping secrets Helen and Nikki both stared at Karen. We will explain everything later I promise but right now we have a party to attend Karen said as she took Yvonne hand and lead her to the dance floor right now I want to dance with my wife. Claire could not stop crying she was so happy the last place she wanted to be right now was in a reception hall. Claire wanted Trisha all to herself she was not sure how long she could hold out. Babe, please stop crying you are going to get me started and that would really be a site wouldn't. Barbara and Monica were so happy they both loved Helen and Nikki like their own children. They were so proud when they were asked to give the mothers toast. They had decided to do the toast together instead of doing two. Can we have your attention please, on behalf of all the brides today we would like to thank you for all of your years of love and support. Monica and I both feel so blessed to stand here today and welcome all of our new family members. I never thought I would ever have children especially so late in life but today my heart is so full I could not love Nikki more if I had brought her into this world and Helen you have given her peace and made her complete. I thank you sincerely for that. Helen, you stood by the graveside of my son with me holding my hand it was the hardest day of my life. I had no idea just how much you would grow to mean to me. You have become the daughter I never had and I love you completely. Nikki your love has made Helen whole and I thank you for that. Most of all we thank you both for giving two old women happiness again we love you our children be happy. To the rest of the brides we raise our glass to happiness, love and a long and happy life together cheers.

Neither Helen nor Nikki was prepared for what happened next. Nikki was stunned to hear her father's voice hello everyone I am Nicholas Wade, Nikki's father. Since James performed the ceremony, he gave me the honor of giving the father's toast. Helen on behalf of the Wade family we thank you for making us a family again, for giving our daughter back to us. And to you our dear daughter we thank you for allowing us to mend the fences of our past and for giving us another beautiful daughter to love. Nikki and Helen stand strong through the hard times, rejoice in the happy ones and love each other until the end of time. To all the other brides we wish you love peace and a lifetime of happiness. Cheers. Both Helen and Nikki were crying uncontrollable, thanks you Helen I can't believe my family is here and they approve of us my dad just gave us his blessing. I know sweetheart you have always told me love can over come anything. I love you Mrs. Wade, Ditto Nikki.

Yvonne how do you feel? Were you as scared as I was? Scared of what Karen? Karen you put your whole life on the line for me. You helped me get away from that awful place, hid me for months until I could get out of the country and gave me you heart I have nothing to be afraid of. If you had not made me see that I could help the police my turning in so many of Charlie's business partners in exchange for a place in witness protection Fenner would have killed me we both know that. Your idea and contacts got the police involved. I know people know I'm not dead now and that might get a little complicated but it was my choose to come out of the program . I am a free woman because of you. Karen I love you and I didn't want to hide it anymore. You deserve more than that from me, and you know me love hiding and taking the easy way has never been me. I love you so much Yvonne Akins. That's something I wanted to talk to you about I know that we have to apply for a name change and I was thinking of dropping the Akins and going back to my maiden name I don't want you to take Charlie's name would you mind. You are incredible sweetheart I wanted to talk to you about that to, I mean I want to drop Betts from my last name as well. The only thing my ex ever gave me worth wild is my son. Then it's agreed from this day forward we will be known as Yvonne and Karen Horton-Brady.

The party was going along swimmingly, everyone was having such a good time. Helen was dancing with Nicholas and Nikki with James it was a true miracle. Von and Karen were having a Larkhall reunion talking to Denny, Jessie, Crystal, Josh, Monica, Barbara, Dominic, Lorna Rose the two Julies and David, Lauren and Karen's son Jamie. They drink a toast to Zandra and Shaz. Trisha and Claire were nowhere to be found having slipped away to their room earlier. All is all it was a good day.
