Well of the more recent US TV progs, Battlestar Galactica is one of my favourites. I think it's a much more interesting prog. than Lost. NZ has only shown season one. I just got a copy of season two, loaned to me by someone in Aussie. Anyway, just finished watching ep one. So how did Maxine Purvis end up on board Battlestar Galactica? and as a goodie? Surely she should be a cylon at least?

Yeah, I just about fainted when I realized it was her working as the medic. I barely recognized her without the accent and the eyeliner.
My favorite shows (past and present) include:
The X-Files
Six Feet Under
The Sopranos
Sex and the City
ER (love-hate relationship there, which is now OVER)
Battlestar Gallactica
Lost
America's Next Top Model (its the best reality show out there, I swear)
House

OMG! I will have to pop in my dvd's! There is supposed to be a trailer of season 3 tonight while theyre premiering their new show. I can capture it if anyone is interested! I am so happy there are so many BSG fans! woo hoo!
X-Files.. how could I forget?? Ab Fab is amazing and so is QAF! Grim adventures is fun too.. along with Dexter!
I see I am the only anime fan :-p Thats the usual way anyway ;-)
campgrrls - July 17, 2006 06:11 PM (GMT)
I haven't watched a lot of anime but I do find it quite interesting. I really like Ghost in the Shell. I quite liked the bit of Noir that I've seen.I've heard about Cowboy Bebop and would like to see it.
TV progs that I like or have liked (not in order of most to least favourite as I find it hard to work out such an order).
This Life
Waking the Dead
Xena
Battlestar Galactica
Six Feet Under
Queer as Folk (UK)
At Home with the Braithewaites
Secret Life of Us
Wire in the Blood
Bodies
Without a Trace (kind of solid police drama but well done & I quite like the characters)
Maddigans Quest
Spooks
Between the Lines
Edge of Darkness
I think Sopranos is an excellent prog though I only got into watching a few eps.
badgirlnuts - July 17, 2006 08:36 PM (GMT)
Hi, My TV watching is quite erratic. I see a couple of episodes here and there and then lose interest. I've never watched anything in Sci-Fi (TV or Movies), so don't recognize most of the shows mentioned. On BBCC ,it's always repeats with few new ones occassionally. The hospital dramas can be quite weary sometimes.
All I can say is it's a good job I had my babies, coz after seeing Bodies, you'll never want to have babies, let alone get pregnant!! <shudder>
Avalon - July 17, 2006 10:11 PM (GMT)
Badgirlnut.. you should really check out Battlestar Galactica. It IS one of the best shows ever made! The characters are so great, the plots are intense and it is just a great show overall. The episode '33' is also one of the best episodes of TV. Period.
I love how the body count changes in the beginning of each show and the little tidbits of the episodes in the beginning as well.
I see no one else has watched 'Dead Like Me'. This is also a great show. Its a dark comedy and was on Showtime in the US for 2 seasons. I have no idea why it got cancelled because it was one of the highest rated shows on Showtime. If you havent seen it.. give it a rent! It can be a bit slow in the beginning, but it is worth it. :-)
badgirlnuts - July 18, 2006 12:23 AM (GMT)
Hi Avalon, Thanx for the suggestion. Since you so sweetly ask me to watch Battlestar Galatica, I'll check if it's shown on any of my cable channels. The problem is when there are so many shows to watch, you don't know which to choose and then you end up watching none!! weird but true.
abzug - July 18, 2006 01:07 AM (GMT)
I was a big Dead Like Me fan, and was very sad when the show was cancelled. The same writer/executive producer was also behind the short-lived series Wonderfalls, which was only broadcast 4 times, but for a while was constantly being rerun on Logo, because the sister of the main character was a lesbian. A lesbian Republican. Fabulous character, played by the hilarious Katie Finneran. Anyway, Wonderfalls is available on DVD, and I highly reccomend buying it. Its got about the best episode commentary I've ever heard--like watching a show with a bunch of friends in your living room.
Oh, and how could I forget Buffy the Vampire Slayer when I made my list?! I loved that show for so many years.

33 was gripping. But there's also a lot more to BSG. I started off liking Starbuck but I've gone off her a bit. She's got some fascist tendencies from what I've seen of season 1 and season 2 ep 1. I also liked the president to start with but I've gone off her a bit too. I'm liking Sharon/Boomer more and more - complex, continues an old sci fi theme of what it is that makes us human. Now I'm off thw atc sesaon 2 ep 2.
And I forgot that I also enjoyed Attachments.

I love this type of question!!! :D
Past and present, in no particular order...
Bad Girls
Footballers' Wives
Between the Lines (excellent Campgrrls, I see you like this too!)
Capital City
Waking the Dead
Queer As Folk (that's the UK version, have never been tempted to watch QAF-US)
Star Trek - The Next Generation
The X-Files
The Young Ones
Bottom
Absolutely Fabulous
Widows (the complete trilogy...my fantasy is for Lynda La Plante to script a BG episode!)
Prime Suspect
Cracker
LA Law
Twin Peaks
This Life
Cardiac Arrest (does *anyone* remember this? It was like the best hospital drama EVER!)

I just started watchined Between the Lines on DVD. I'm about four episodes in, and its definitely engaging me. Mo has so much going on behind her eyes--I'm very much looking forward to seeing how they explore this character....

:eek
angie - July 18, 2006 02:44 PM (GMT)
Jesus, your day must contain 36 hours ! Where do you find the time to watch all these shows ?
I don't know the quarter of the quoted shows ! Maybe, their name are very different in french (I don't know, Star Trek stayed Star Treck, Xena is Xena la guerrière, but Footballers' Wives ? Between the Lines ? Capital City ? Waking the Dead ? ...)
Just now, I watch (UK or US shows because french shows are pathetic ...)
- Bad girls, bad girls and bad girls (I discovered the show about one month ago ...)
and when I have time (looking Bad girls is a full time occupation :D)
- The L word
- Desperate Housewives.
Does anybody watch Desperate Housewives here, and the L word ?

I watched the first season of Desperate Housewives and liked it a lot, but I thought it went way downhill in the second season, so I lost patience. I would say something similar about The L Word, but I have felt some perverse loyalty to the show, and so have continued to watch (and complain) through the end of S3. Some of the cast additions for S4 look pretty promising, so we'll see....
The good news is, in the US there's almost no tv broadcast during the summer, so it gives me time to do things like watch Between the Lines on dvd.
ekny - July 18, 2006 05:06 PM (GMT)
I'm not a big TV person, I don't receive it (you literally don't get a signal where I live unless you pay for it, & I'll be damned if I'm going to pay cash money for television, it's bad enough for free--the idea that most Americans pay $700, $1000 dollars a year for television is totally mind-boggling to me)... so only watched shows available on DVD that've been heavily recommended by friends. Of those, the only ones I've seen in the last decade that I'd consider owning are Buffy, QAF (US, S1-4, not 5), 6 Feet Under, & The Wire. (Actually the only reason I don't own Buffy yet is the DVD boxed set was too bloody expensive & just went out of print, yet again. Well, they'll reissue it forever. Or at least as long as ST. ;) )
I've enjoyed some others, once, maybe twice--The Shield, some eps of Angel (puppet thing was brilliant), and Once & Again had a lot of incredibly good acting. Even liked Firefly after resisting for awhile. But don't need to own them. That's how I draw my distinctions, anyhow....
campgrrls - July 18, 2006 05:56 PM (GMT)
Oh, yes The Wire. I've watched a few eps when I remember to tape it. It's on very late her. Excellent prog., tho I do have trouble understanding a loty of the street dialogue.
I loved Widows too, filbertfox. Lynda La Plante did great stuff initially but I have quibbles about the way she went on to be into quite macho male characters. And I understand that she agreed with axing kate Buffery as she was thought to be getting to old for Trial and Retribution.
Damn thing posted again before I'd finished!!
I also like Prime Suspect, LA Law and Cracker ALOT. Also Hill Street Blues.
Must get out my BTL tapes - I don't think I have all eps, but will look at some again when I get a moment.
flump - July 18, 2006 11:33 PM (GMT)
I love these sorts of questions! Right, in no particular order, past and presant:
Bad Girls
Between the Lines
Vicar of Dibley
Friends
Sex and the City
Home buying/ renovations programmes
Taggart (ones from the 80's are the best ones!)
Cracker
Prime Suspect
Heartbeat (yes, I know, I'm sorry but I like it OK!)
The Simpsons
Teachers
Coupling
Grumpy Old Men/Women
Sugar Rush
Life of Grime
Loads more, but can't think!

On the US DVDs, subtitles are available. Initially I was kind of embarrassed about needing them; I thought sheesh, I'm American, I should understand this stuff; bit of liberal guilt I had to get past before letting myself realize--Doh: subtitles. But the fact is it's not just black slang, it's regional and it's street/drug argot specific to that region, so really there's no way to be familiar with all that. So for some exchanges, the subtitles are really useful--don't know if they're available for you in your country though! --e

I agree there is much more to BSG! I think I liked 33 so much because it made you feel like they were up for 120 hours! :-D I didnt like Starbuck at first.. but now I do! I like Boomer alot and Six. I CANNOT wait to see Baltar get his! 'Downloaded' was another good ep.

Oh. that's interesting DKNY. Thanks for the tip about The Wire, but I don't buy DVDs - I'm on a very tight budget. So I hire, or watch them for free in the Uni AV library, or get them for free from the public library where I do some part time work. But I don't think either have The Wire on DVD. Heh - I just searched the public library catalogue for the Wire. It just came up with a print an audio book of Val McDermid's The Wire in the Blood.
I haven't got to Downloaded yet in BSG, Avalon. But it's the first ep Lucy Lawless is in so I will be interested to see what she's like.... but no spoilers, please. The ep I watched last night erm Fragged I think, tensie spoiler comments coming up.
This ep started with me not liking Starbuck cause of the way she was slagging Boomer off, but I quite liked her in her old flat, being really ragged and scungy. Baltar is a pain. How anyone could elect him VP is beyond me. Also I was wondering, if the cylons are so clever, how come they only take 2 or 3 forms: the big silver metal ones with the red light for eyes, human form, and Baltar's blond fantasy woman????? And how come if they are all earth's ancestors they only seem to incorporate US, ans European culture? Kind of 20th-21st century US culture * ancient Greek/Roman references.

| What is Between the Lines about? Sounds interesting! |
Between the Lines was a police drama series that aired in the UK in the early 90s. It was about the now obsolete, Complaints Investigation Bureau (CIB), the coppers who investigate coppers. It was an interesting series, especially because not many of the episodes actually reached a satisfactory conclusion and left the main characters (Superintendent Tony Clark, Inspector Harry Naylor, and Sergeant Mo Connell) frustrated, and a lot of the time, questioning their loyalties.
From what I can remember, the show picked up several BAFTAs. Personally, I can definitely say that it's one of the best police dramas i've ever watched and ranks right up there as one of my top three shows of all time.

Yes, I agree with you. But then La Plante has always created macho male characters (i'm thinking Tony Fisher, Harry Rawlins from Widows...Shefford, and maybe Otley from Prime Suspect) although in the past, she has always balanced them out with strong female characters.
Re Trial and Retribution, at first I quite liked Walker, but by the T&R II, I began to despise him. Yes, the removal of Kate Buffery in favour of Victoria Smurfit (interestingly enough playing a character called Roisin Connor) was a complete travesty. The balance of the show went completely to cock...North was the perfect foil to Walker, Connor was nothing more than a red-rag to his bull. I am surprised to hear that La Plante sanctioned this change...saddened also.
What are your thoughts on The Commander? I watched it all through for the first time about a month ago and have to say, La Plante's outdone herself as far as creating a completely unlikeable main character is concerned. Yes, Tennison had her faults, but Blake? She schemes, she manipulates, she sleeps with her subordinates boyfriends...has she *any* redeemable qualities??

Between the Lines was also about being between two kinds of lines: the first was between the police lines which had to do with the CIB investigating police; the second was between the newspaper lines. Each ep covered an issue or story similar to one that had been a big issue in the news media. It was pure genius because it commented on various topical issues of the 1990s.
Tony Garnett was exec producer and I've just heard that he's going to be part of an industry panel at the conference I'm going to in Manchester in Sept!!! Garnett has a genius for making progs that reflect the mores and culture of the time it is made.
I haven't seen the post Buffery Trial and Redtribution yet. Don't think it's been on here.
I think Amanda Burton was totally mis-cast as The Commander apart from anything else. Can't remember much else about it.
campgrrls - July 20, 2006 08:10 PM (GMT)
Watched season two ep of Battlestar Galactica The Farm last night. A little spoiler space...............
I like the turn of events that has the President Ros & the rebel Zarach working together against Adama. One of the main things that put me off the Pres & made me critical of the prog was the Zarach story in season one. It made Ros too much like Bush Jr in the way Zarach was written as an evil terrorist. To me it's perfectly credible that there would be some oppositon to the Galactica ruling regime, and in a democracy this should be accepted rather than treated by authoritarian, quasi fascist policies. Such policies reached an extreme though with the acting military commander so I'm glad to see some organised opposition to it. It also makes the overall philosophy of the prog. more complex and interesting.
I really liked seeing a ragged Boomer back in support of the Galactica team. A sight for sore eyes!!!

Excellent thread as I am currently looking to explore some new shows so I am open to suggestions. Lately I have been going through a BBC phase which started with Footballers Wives, but brought me to...
<drum roll please>
BAD GIRLS
<short pause to contemplate every passionate kiss that Helen & Nikki ever shared>
Now for my list which isn't in an order other than the first programme.
Battlestar Galactica <big sigh for Starbuck>
Eureka (new show on Scifi channel here)
Star Trek
Star Trek Next Generation
Star Trek Voyager
Star Trek Deep Space Nine (well I am still trying to acquire a taste for it)
Time Trax
Dark Angel (now being re-run on Scifi)
John Doe
Mutant X
Stargate
Stargate Atlantis
The Dead Zone
The 4400
The L Word
Queer as Folk (US - some seasons)
Weeds
Hex (have only seen 1st season)
Coupling (have only seen first few eps)
My Family (only seen about 5 eps)
Sugar Rush (1st season only)
X-Files - the early seasons
Veronica Mars
Smallville
Supernatural
Law & Order
Law & Order SVU
In my quest to explore programmes outside my realm, I did purchase Spooks S1, Coupling, My Family, Sugar Rush and have been contemplating some others.
If it hadn't been for Amazon recommending Bad Girls I never would have known about it.
Tasha Yar - August 9, 2006 07:59 PM (GMT)
You mind if I ask a question in this thread since some of you have mentioned these shows. I went through Amazon.co.uk to pick up some new things for me but wasn't sure if they were worthy of a purchase.
Note: I have never seen or heard of ANY of these before.
Any thoughts on the following?
Crime Traveller
Ultraviolet (series)
The Champions
Allo Allo
Star Cops
The Dinnerladies
Hustle
Regenesis
Waterloo Road
BTW, in my list of faves I forgot to add "24" and Odyssey 5.
Thanks for the help!
aquarius68 - August 10, 2006 07:43 AM (GMT)
Hi Tasha Yar,
I watched ULTRAVIOLET several years ago on Aussie TV (ABC). It's a British Mini Series that deals with the supernatural (contemporary vampires) I thought it was excellent. If you like Sci - Fi, you should like this show. Theres a review of it on imdb.com.
Tasha Yar - August 10, 2006 05:13 PM (GMT)
Thanks Aquarius68. I had looked there as well as Amazon, but know that sometimes imdb can be seeded.
I will add Ultraviolet to my next purchase. Just ordered Bad Girls S5-6, My Family, Tipping the Velvet and some others, so I better give my wallet a break. LOL
Keep the suggetions coming as I am tired of being in a rut!
Thanks!

I've only just come across this thread and I read the posts with great interest. As a Brit, I find that I'm paying my licence fee for the small amount of quality programmes and an awful amount of sheer garbage and I tend to feel more and more closed off. It isn't the easiest for something to get through to me and I'm incredibly glad that Bad Girls got through to me from the word go.
Judge John Deed- this is a brilliant 4-6 part legal drama, politically acute and with characters with as much depth as Bad Girls, the first series being out on DVD (sorry for the blatent commercial plug)
The X files- this was a subtly written, haunting and strikingly original series
Absolutely Fabulous
I, Claudius
Holby City
Life on Mars (A police series where the modern protagonist is ‘transported’ back to the 1970’s)
The Blackadder Series
Waking the Dead
The Young Ones
Cracker
Jolien - August 14, 2006 05:24 PM (GMT)

Hi, I don't know if anyone has seen this show. I just happen to catch the last 20 minutes of "America's next top model" on wed night and I have to say I've never seen anything more unappealing in my life! In one segment the girls (ages bet 18 and 22) were literally bamboozled into posing without a stich for a photo session, only one girl became uneasy and refused to undress. I wonder if their parents watching it were surprised or even shocked. And Tyra'I'm the producer,me'Banks was conveniently absent in this segment.
abzug - September 23, 2006 02:08 AM (GMT)
I actually love America's Next Top Model. It's hard to appreciate it if you just see 20 minutes of an episode, but as a series, it's terrific television, definitely my favorite reality competition show. First of all, it focuses on women. Second of all, the women are really gorgeous. Third of all, winning actually takes some real skill and talent (that's what's hard to see if you only watch a few minutes of the show--but if you watch many episodes, you can see what goes into being a great model). And in the end, it winds up being all about women's relationships with eachother, unlike on most other tv programs where men (either fictional or real) dominate.

And if you want comedy, watch Peter Kay: Live At The Bolton Albert Halls.
