Chapter 1
Nikki wade sat in her office and stared off into space. It had been over three years now since she had been released from prison. She waited outside the courthouse that day until the sun went down. But Helen never came. She had tried to make excuses up in her mind. Maybe there had been an accident or a death in the family but deep down she knew that Helen didn’t love her anymore. Nikki had all but moved on. She had gone back to work at the club, moving into the loft upstairs. Her and Trish had talked and agreed that although they loved each other they could not go back to the way things were. Life was good, and then a week ago she had started to have nightmares. A child was standing in the park alone crying for her mommy. Nikki had tried to get to the girl but just as she was about to reach her she woke up.

The sound of the phone ringing snapped Nikki out of her trance. She picked up the phone “Nikki Wade.” “Nikki wade this is D.S Joyce Withers. We need you to come down to the station.” “What why have I done something wrong” “No Ms.Wade but it is a rather sensitive issue and I would rather not discuss it over the phone.” “Okay I will be right there.” Nikki hung up the phone walked out stopping quickly to tell Trish she needed to go out before heading for the station. Nikki was very uncomfortable walking into the station. The last time she had here was when she was arrested for Gossards murder. She walked to the front desk and asked for D.S Withers. A couple of minutes later a tall blond woman walked towards the front desk. She held out her hand. “Hello Ms. Wade I am D.S Withers thank you for coming so quickly.” “I don’t mean to be rude but could you please tell me why I’m here?” “Come down to the children’s interview room and I will tell you while we walk.” Nikki nodded her head and followed the woman down the hall. “We received a phone call earlier this afternoon that there was a small girl alone in the park. We went down, picked her up and identified her as Sophie Stewart-Wade your daughter.” Nikki stood there in shock for a moment. “I’m sorry did you say my daughter?” “Yes I believe you and a Ms. Helen Stewart share custody of her. We have tried to contact MS Stewart but have been unable to locate her. She was not at her house or her place of employment.” Nikki just stood there she didn’t know what to say or do. A daughter but how was this possible. She hadn’t spoken to Helen in over three years. When the door opened Nikki saw the little girl sitting there playing with her toys and a lump formed in her throat. She looked just like Helen. The little girl looked up when she realized the door had opened. She ran to Nikki and hugged her leg. “Nikki mummy said you would come.” D.S Withers looked down at the little girl and smiled. “I assume you would like to take your daughter home. She has had quite a stressful afternoon.” Nikki nodded and picked up the little girl. “Yes thank you. Helen is probably somewhere worried sick looking for her.” With that Nikki walked out of the police station carrying the little girl. She sat Sophie down in the car then got in the other side. She looked over at the child and spoke. “Sophie how do you know who I am?" “Mummy showed me a picture off you. She said that you were my other mummy and that you were going to come and take care of me. She told me that I should be a good girl and that you would take good care of me.” Nikki didn’t know what to say. She just sat there and looked into the little girls big green eyes. How was it even possible? Then it occurred to her. Claire, if anyone would know what was going on it would be her. She drove to Claries office and went inside quickly trying to figure out what she was going to say.

She stopped at the secretary’s desk and told them who she was. When Claire came out Sophie went running. “Auntie Claire Auntie Claire.” “Well hello there my little princess to what do I owe this pleasure?” Nikki brought me” Nikki looked at the two of them and got even more confuse. “Claire we need to talk.” “Sure Nikki come into my office.” Claire walked in and sat down behind the desk. “Nothing has happened to Helen has it?” “Well honestly Claire I don’t know. I was hoping you could tell me. I haven’t spoken to Helen since before I was released. Then today out of the blue I received a phone call from the police asking me to the police station. When I get there they told me my daughter who I didn’t even know I had was there.” Claire’s eyes got really big and all of the color drained from her face. I took her a minute to speak. “But I thought. I mean. Oh my god. I hadn’t spoken to Helen either until about eight months ago. She came down to have me draw up adoption papers for Sophie so that you could become her legal parent. Usually the papers have to be signed here but because you work such crazy hours at the club she asked if she could take them home and have you sign them there I trusted her so I gave them to her. She brought them back a week later and I put it all through. She also had me set up a trust account for Sophie at the same time. I though the two of you had gotten back together.” “No I haven’t seen or spoken to her since she left me at the prison that day.” “Well this is grounds to nullify the adoption. We can have it all straightened out and...” “No we can’t. If anyone asks I signed those papers and this is my daughter. Helen must have done this for a reason and after everything she has done for me I owe her this.” “Has anyone spoken to Helen to find out what is going on?” “No the police tried to locate her but they couldn’t. That’s the funny thing though. When Sophie saw me she said that her mummy said I would come. Then when I asked her in the car she said Helen had told her that I was going to come and take care of her.” “Nikki are you sure I mean this is a big responsibility.” “I am sure. She is part of Helen how could I not? But I don’t understand Claire I mean all of the sudden, and to just leave her like that in the park. It’s just not like Helen to do something like that. “Nikki I don’t know what to tell you. We went out for coffee a few times she seemed a little off but I just assumed that with Sophie and things with you. Maybe she just had too much on her plate.” “ I don’t know what to think. This morning I woke up and it was just like any other day. Now I have a little girl. It is just a lot to take in. I don’t even have any clothes for her.” “ I understand Nikki if there is any thing I can do to help you please let me know.” Nikki nodded and stood up. “Thank you Claire I appreciate your help.” “It’s no problem. Just promise me you will let me know if there is anything I can do.” “I will thank you.” Taking Sophie’s hand she turned and walked out the door.

Chapter 2
She stopped on her way back to the flat and picked up some necessities. Clothes toys and such. Then she went home to try and settle the little girl in for the night. She phoned Trish as soon as she got in the door to let her know that she would not be coming into the club tonight. Then asked her to pop around in the morning because there were some things she needed to talk to her about. She was standing at the counter staring off into space when she felt a little hand pulling on her pant leg. Sophie had been so quiet since they got home that she had completely forgotten she was there. “What would you like sweetheart?” “I miss mommy.” Nikki picked up the little girl and walked over to the couch. “I know but I am sure she will be back soon.” “No mommy said she is not coming back. She said you would take care of me from now on. She asked if that was okay and I told her yes, but it’s not I don’t want mommy to go away.” “I know, but I promise I will take good care of you and I will do what I can to find your mommy for you o.k..?” Sophie nodded and then let out a really big yawn. “Well it looks like someone is tired. How about we put you to bed.” “Okay but will you tuck me in?” “Of course I will.” “Oh and I need Bernard I can’t sleep without him.” “Well where is Bernard?” “He is in my backpack.” “Okay you go and climb into my bed and I will get Bernard and come tuck you in.” The little girl nodded and ran off to the bed room. Nikki smiled as she watched her go and wondered to herself how someone could ever leave this little girl. She walked over and picked up Sophie’s backpack from the doorway. In it she found a stuffed bear and an envelope with her name on it. Nikki sat back down on the couch and opened up the envelope to read the enclosed letter.
My Dearest Nikki
I am sorry that things had to come out this way. I was hoping that one day I could explain everything to your face, but that is never going to happen. I have to leave I wish I could explain things to you better but I can’t. Some things have happened in my life. Things that I can’t explain. I can no longer look after Sophie. I know it seems like a lot after all this time. But you are the only one that I trust. Please take care of her for me and let her know that I love her. And please know that I never stopped loving you. Not a day went by that I didn’t think of you and hope that maybe someday we would raise her together. I am so sorry. Please don’t come looking for me.
Love, Helen.

Nikki put down the letter. She had tears streaming down her face. How was she supposed to believe that Helen loved her when she just walked away from her like that? And this poor little girl what was she supposed to tell her when she asked for her mommy. Nikki looked up when she heard the little footsteps coming across the room. “Nikki how come you crying?" “I am just sad that’s all princesses. I miss your mommy.” Sophie crawled up onto Nikki’s knee. “Mommy said not to miss her. She said that even if I could not see her she would always be here.” Sophie pointed to her hear and made Nikki smile. She was very wise for a little girl. “I think that we should get you back to bed now don’t you?” “I’m not tired can I stay up with you?” “Alright we will watch a bit of TV until you get sleepy but then it is time for you to go to bed o.k.” The little girl nodded and snuggled into Nikki.

Trish let herself into the flat the next morning. She had worried about Nikki all night it was not like her to just not come into the club like that. Not that she really minded. She had tried to get Nikki to take some time off but she always said that she had lots of time off when she was in prison. Trish was not prepared for what she was when she walked into the living room. The TV was still one and Nikki was asleep on the couch with a little girl curled up on her knee. The little girl opened her eyes when she came into the room. “Hello who are you?” “My name is Trish I am a friend of Nikki’s who are you?” “My name is Sophie Stewart-Wade Nikki is my other mommy.” Trish didn’t know what to say she just stood there. Mommy but how? It was then that Nikki opened her eyes. “Nikki what the hell is going on?” “Well good morning to you too Trish.” “I’m sorry but would you please explain.” “Sophie is my daughter. Well mine and Helen’s.” “But when how, I mean you haven’t spoken to that two faced” She shot a dirty look at Trish then she looked down at Sophie “Sorry. You haven’t spoken to Helen since you were in prison how could you possibly have a daughter together?” “It is a long story but the long and the short of it is I adopted Sophie now Helen has taken off and left her with me.” “Nikki how are you going to take care of a little girl? There is barely enough room in this flat for you and with the hours that you work at the club.” Nikki started to cry and put her head into her hands. “I don’t know I haven’t had time to think about that. All I know is that she is mine now and I am not going to let her down like my parents did to me.” “Okay Nikki I will help you in any way that I can. Have you spoken to Helen?” No the police tried to contact her yesterday but they couldn’t. I found a letter from her in Sophie’s backpack asking me to take care of her and telling me she was sorry. I don’t think she is coming back.” “I am sorry I know that inside you always hoped that someday she would come back for you.” “I know but none of that matters now all that matters is that little girl.”

Chapter 3
The next year went well for Nikki. She had moved into a house with Claire. Sophie had her own room and a yard to play in. Nikki started to go into the club later at night. She would wait until Sophie went to bed and then go in. I worked out well because then Claire would be there for her when she left. Nikki didn’t know what she would have done this past year without her. Nikki had hired a private investigator to try and find Helen but with no luck. It was like she had just dropped off the face of the earth. It had come to the point where Nikki thought she would never see Helen again. Maybe it was time for her to move on, start fresh somewhere new. A new life for her and for Sophie. When Claire got home from work that night Nikki sat down to talk to her. “Claire I have been thinking. It has been a year since Helen left and it’s about time for Sophie to start school. But I am scared of what will happen when the kids at the school find out who I am and what I have done.” “Nikki don’t worry about that all you did was protect someone you love. Sophie will understand that.” “I know she will. But kids are mean. I don’t want her to have to spend the next ten years sticking up for me. It is not fair to her. I was thinking about moving starting off somewhere fresh. Somewhere were the people don’t know about me or what I’ve done.” “But what about the club and where would you go?” “Well I could sell the club or hire someone to manage it for me. As for where I would go I was thinking Toronto.” “Toronto but that is in Canada. I mean why so far I would barely get to see Sophie.” “Well it is the big city life but still just a short drive to somewhere quiet. The people there would be accepting of me and my lifestyle. As for you not getting to see Sophie, Well I was hoping that you would come with us.” “Me move half way across the world what about my job and…” “And Trish?” “How did you know?” “You would have to be a fool not you. You can see it in your eyes when you look at each other. I have spoken to Trish. We talked about selling the club and starting a restaurant in Toronto. I would do most of the office and day work and she could do the evening work. I wouldn’t ask but Sophie has gotten very attached to the both of you and well so have I. And I know how attached you have gotten to her. But I owe her a fresh start, away from the past.” I don’t know Nikki I will need to think about it.”

Chapter 4
It had been a year now since they had moved to Toronto. They all lived together in a house outside of the city. It was a fair commute to work everyday but it was worth the peace and quiet when they were at home. Nikki sat outside on the back deck watching Sophie play in the yard. She could not believe how much she looked like Helen. She had the same hair and the same green eyes. The eyes that Nikki was powerless against. Every time she looked into them she could instantly feel her resolve start to fail. Which had led to trouble. It was those eyes that caused them to now own a pool, hamster and a large tank full of fish. Nikki truly did love this little girl though. It was then that Sophie came running up. “Mommy, mommy will you come and play with me?” It had been six months since Sophie had started calling her that and still every time she heard it she looked around to see who she was talking to. “Oh I don’t know.” “Please mommy” Oh no there were those eyes again. How could she say no? “Oh alright but what are we playing?” “We are going to have a water fight.” Before Nikki could respond Sophie brought the garden hose from behind her back and used it to completely soak Nikki. “Why you little.” Nikki got up and ran after the little girl, picking her up and swinging her in the air as Sophie giggled. It when then that Trish and Claire arrived home and walked out the back door. Trish looked at Claire and smiled. “Look honey the children are home.” Nikki turned to look at Trish and pouted. “Are you saying that I am a child?” “No not in so many words. I was simply saying that you often behave like one.” Nikki then picked up the hose and soaked Trish from head to toe. “Nikki what are you doing” “Well darling I do believe that I am behaving like a child.” They were all laughing and running around in the back yard when they heard the phone ringing.

Nikki ran over to answer it. “Hello.” “Hello is this Nikki Wade?” “Yes it is.” “Miss Wade this is Ryan Roberts. I am the private detective you hired to find Helen Stewart.” Nikki just stood there in shock as she listened to what he had to say. She then put down the phone and walked into the house. It was Claire who came in to see if she was alright. “Nikki what’s the matter you look like you’ve just seen a ghost. Who was on the phone?” “It was the private detective I hired to find Helen.” “But I thought you called that off when we left the country.” “I did but it would appear that while he was working on another case he found her.” “Really but how after all this time?” “Well it would appear that she is in trouble. They are holding her at the police station now. She is being charged with drunk and disorderly. I guess she caused a fight in a bar then attacked the bouncer when he tried to throw her out. But this is not her first offence. So if someone does not get her a good solicitor and post her bail she will go to jail.” “But they can’t send her to jail she was a prison officer. When the other inmates find that out they will kill her.” “I know but what about Sophie. She just got settled in and is doing so well. I can’t very well introduce this woman into her life, especially if I don’t know if she is going to stick around. But I can’t let her go to jail either.” “So what are you going to do?” “Can you watch Sophie for a couple of days?” “Of course I will.” “I am going to fly to London. I will bail her out and make arrangements for a solicitor. She won’t even know it was me. As soon as it is all settled I will come back.” “What do we tell Sophie?” “I will just tell her that I have to go away and help a friend.” Claire nodded and Nikki went upstairs to pack.

She had just put the last of her things in the bag when Sophie came in. “Mommy what are you doing?” “Mommy hast to go away for a couple of days.” “No you can’t go I’ll be good I promise.” Nikki picked up the little girl and sad down on the bed. “I am not going forever sweetheart I promise. It will only be for a couple of days. Your aunties will take care of you while I am gone. I would never leave you forever I promise. Besides if you are a good girl for your aunties I will bring you home a present.” “A present, what kind of present?” “Well that part will have to be a surprise o.k.?” “Okay mommy I will be good. But I will miss you.” “I will miss you too. I love you Sophie.” “I love you too mommy.”
Chapter 5
When Nikki arrived in London she checked into her hotel then went to visit an old friend Monica Lindsay. When Monica opened the door Nikki realized just how much she had missed her. “Nikki Wade is that you? I haven’t seen you in ages. Come in please.” They walked in and settled at the kitchen table. “So how have you been and how is my little angel?” “We are both fine thank you. Sophie loves her school and has made plenty of friends. She seems to have settled in nicely.” “That is wonderful. Does she still ask about Helen?” “No she stopped about two months after we got there. I am not even sure that she remembers her anymore. She even started calling me mommy. I was going to try and talk to her about it but I don’t know what to say and if she would even understand. We hadn’t even heard about Helen until.” “Until what?” “Well I got a call from a private detective I had hired. It would appear that Helen has gotten herself into some trouble.” “Trouble what kind of trouble?” “Well I am not sure exactly all I know is this was her last chance and if I can’t get her out of it then they are going to send her to prison.” “Oh my god that is terrible, but what can you do?” “Well I hired a solicitor for her and he seems to think that he can get her let out on bail for now but there may be some conditions. She is going to have to have somewhere to go, somewhere she can be watched. I guess she has been drinking a lot. That is actually why I am here. The judge would be a lot better about it if she were coming to stay here at your halfway house. Of course I will pay for all of her expenses while she is here.” “Of course Nikki. But what happens when it is time for her to leave here. Where will she go then?” “ I paid out the mortgage when I sold the club. Just let me know a day or so before she is ready to leave and I will phone and have all the utilities hooked up.” “Okay but what shall I tell her when she asks about how all this is being paid for?” “Just tell her that and old friend is repaying her dept.” Monica nodded and smiled. “I am sorry I can’t stay longer Monica but I have to get over to the solicitors office before court this afternoon. I will be in touch before I go home though.” “Alright Nikki. Good luck and give Sophie a kiss for me when you get home.” “I will and Monica thank you I really appreciate this”

Nikki got everything settled at the solicitors office then went up to the court house. She waited until Helen had been brought in before she snuck into the courtroom. It would be much better if Helen never knew she was there. Nikki looked down at her. The once strong and confident woman now looked so small and frail. She reminded Nikki of the addicts that came to G-wing. She heard the judge ask. “How does the defendant plead?” “She pleads guilty your honor. But if it pleases the court we would like to ask for a conditional bail.” “Go on.” “I would like to ask that my client be granted bail and put on remand which she would serve ant the halfway house of Miss Monica Lindsay.” The judge looked at the crown attorney and asked. “Do you have any problem with these conditions?” “No your honor.” “Alright I will grant bail at $10000 miss Stewart is to go reside at the halfway house and attend a rehab program. Miss Stewart you were once an upstanding member of the community which is why I am granting you this final chance. You must understand though this is the last one. I expect you back her in 90 days at which time we will review your sentencing.” The judge then got up and left the courtroom.

Helen looked at the solicitor. “But how I mean I didn’t hire you and I don’t have the money for the bail.” “Don’t worry Miss Stewart. I have been hired by a third party and the same person has generously offered to post your bail. This is a good chance you have been given. I suggest you take it.” “I will thank you.” Helen then got up to leave as she did she scanned the courtroom quickly. That was when she saw her. But how, why? How would Nikki know she was here? Helen stood there for a minute then chased Nikki outside. “Nikki, Nikki wait.” But she did not stop simply kept walking. “Nikki stop talk to me please you owe me that much.” This made Nikki stop and turn around. “I owe you. I think my debt to you has been paid. Don’t you miss? The $10000 should about cover it.” “You paid it but why?” “Because you once got me out of prison now I have done the same for you. That makes us even.” “But what about Sophie?” Nikki’s temper started to flare and she hissed. “Don’t even pretend to care about that little girl. You left her and why because of your precious career. That’s right you didn’t think I would find out did you. You got into trouble at the prison. Someone escaped and threatened you. And instead of taking her and leaving you left her. Well I hope your career was worth it because now miss that’s all you have left.” Then Nikki turned and walked away leaving Helen on the steps crying.

Chapter 6
Once Helen had composed herself she hailed a cab and went to Monica’s house. She was glad when the older woman met her at the front door with a smile. It had been so long since she had seen a friendly face. "Hello Monica thank you so much for doing this." “No problem at all. Come this way I will show you to your room. Now the house rules are that you have to be in between the hours of nine and seven. If you have to be out later than that for any reason it will need to be cleared with me ahead of time. Here is your room. I know that it's not much. But if everything goes well you will be back in your own flat in a couple of months." "My flat, but I don't have it anymore." "Yes you do. The mortgage is all paid up and it will be ready for you when it's time." "But who, I mean how?" "Never mind that now lets just worry about getting you better." "Thank you Monica. But if you don't mind I think I am just going to spend some time alone in my room. It has been a very long and eventful day." Helen turned and went to her room.

She had lied to Monica. She was not tired but she could feel herself starting to sweat and get shaky. Wanting to get through this on her own she could not let Monica see how hard this was for her. It was midnight hen Monica woke up to the crying and the screaming. She quickly ran to Helen's room to find out what was the matter. "Helen what is it, what’s the matter?" "It's her fault all her fault." "Who's fault what are you talking about?" "Nikki. It's her fault I am like this, she took everything from me and destroyed my life." Monica walked up and slapped Helen right across the face. "Don't you ever speak about her that way in this house again. Over and over again in prison Nikki protected you, she even took in your daughter after you abandon her. Not to mention that she hopped on the first flight here to bail you out of jail. If anyone has ruined your life it was you and it is about time you realized that." With that Monica turned and walked out the door leaving Helen on the floor sobbing.

Helen didn't know how long she had been there when she heard the door open. She didn't even look up, ashamed of the way she had behaved earlier. Then she felt a pair of women's arms wrap around her and hold her tight. She was scared to look up, scared that it all was just a dream. But it wasn't Nikki was here and she was holding her, but why? Finally she got the courage up. She looked up into Nikki's eyes expecting to see hatred and anger, instead what she saw was love. "Nikki. Your here." "Yes Monica phoned me." "I'm sorry Nikki. I'm sorry I lashed out but I just don't know what to do." "I know Helen it's alright. But if I am going to help you I need the truth alright." Helen nodded. "Now I know that you are withdrawing from the alcohol but is that the only thing?" Helen just looked down at the ground and shook her head. That was all that was said, Helen fell asleep in Nikki's arms and for the first time in a year she felt safe. Nikki woke before Helen in the morning but she was scared to move. She knew what she was going to have to do but wanted this moment to last a little longer. Finally she felt the small Scott stur in her arms. She looked up at Nikki and smiled "Hello" "Good morning. I was wondering when you were going to wake up. Do you feel better now?" "Yes thank you. How did you know, I mean why did you come last night?" "Monica phoned me and told me you were going through a rough spot. She wasn't sure what else to do. I have made arrangements for you to check into a clinic today so that you can get the help that you need." "But why after everything I have done and said to you why would you do that for me?" "Because you saved me and I want to return the favor." Helen nodded. There were so many things she wanted to say but she couldn't. "Well you better get your bags ready we need to get you to the clinic." Helen silently got her things ready. She stopped to thank Monica and apologize for the things that she had said.

They got into the car and they were off. They had been driving for about fifteen minutes before Helen finally got up the courage to speak. "Nikki would you please tell me about Sophie?" Helen saw Nikki's jaw tighten. "What would you like to know?" "Everything." "Well she started school this year and has made alot of friends. Her teachers say that she is very smart. She likes to play outdoors. She would spend every night outside in the yard if I would let her. Her favorite shows are cartoons; she likes to be read a book every night before she goes to bed. Oh and six months ago she finally stopped having nightmares about being left alone in the park." Helen hung her head she knew she had deserved that last part. "So Helen, I told you, now it is your turn. Tell me why." "Why what?" "Why you left a little girl alone in the park." "I got into trouble at work. Things were bad I was begging to drink more and more. I couldn't handle taking care of her. Then the woman I was having trouble with escaped from prison and she was after me. They tried to catch her but they couldn't. We hadn't heard from her in a long time but the fear was getting to me. I would get drunk every night and not wake up till late the next day. It wasn't fair to Sophie. I had the adoption papers drawn up. I was going to ask you to take her. You were the only person I trusted. But every time I picked up the phone I got scared and hung it right back up again. Then I got a death threat. The police wanted me to go into protective custody right away. I thought I was doing the right thing what if she found me and hurt Sophie. I left her in the park and phoned the police. I sat there and watched them take her away. They finally caught the woman a year later. By the time I got back you and Sophie were gone. It all went downhill from there. I know how I did it was wrong, but I honestly thought I was doing what was best for her." Just as Helen finished they pulled up outside the clinic. "Nikki I know it is asking a lot but all I want is one more chance. I love you and I love Sophie." Nikki looked at her standing there with her eyes full of tears. "Prove it." She said then she got back into her car and drove away

Chapter 7
Nikki had never been so glad to be home. She honestly thought that she had put everything behind her. The anger, the hurt and the love. But seeing Helen had brought it all crashing back. She opened the front door and walked into the house. Before she could even close the door she heard it. "Mummy your home." "Well hello sweetheart. I told you I would come back. Were you good for your aunties while I was gone?" "Yes mummy I was very good." "Where is Auntie Clair?" "She is in the kitchen making a special supper." "Oh a special supper. Well I guess we should keep her around then shouldn't we." Sophie just nodded and giggled. Clair looked up when Nikki walked into the kitchen. "Your home how was your flight?" "It was good thank you." "How did everything go?" "It went. I will tell you all about it. But first. Sophie will you pleas go and watch some cartoons for a little bit mummy needs to talk to auntie." "Awww but mummy." "I'll tell you what. You go and watch some cartoons for now and after supper we will go for ice cream just you and me o.k.?" "Can we take the motorcycle?" Nikki just laughed. She had bought the bike as a way to get out and relax but had created a monster. Sophie never wanted to ride in the car anymore. "Yes we can take the motorcycle." "Yay” Then the little girl turned and ran out of the room.

Claire sat down next to Nikki at the table. "So how was it?" "It was horrible. The lawyer managed to get her a deal and they let her out on bail with a promise to appear in court in 90 clean and having gone through a rehab program. I tried to get out of the courthouse without her seeing me but she cornered me outside. We got into a big argument there then Monica phoned me in the middle of the night. Helen was screaming and crying and Monica didn't know what to do. It turns out that it is not just alcohol Helen has been using drugs as well. So I stayed with her that night and checked her into a rehab clinic the next morning." "Did she ask about Sophie?" "Yes I told her about her. Then she I asked her why she had done what she did. She told me about it and said that she thought she was doing the right thing for Sophie. Then she told me that she loved us and wanted another chance. I told her to prove it, dropped her off at the clinic and left." "You did the right thing Nikki." "I know it's just seeing her again after all this time. It brought back so much." Clair just nodded and gave her friend a hug. "Come on lets eat."

After supper Nikki took Sophie for ice cream and as promised they went on the motorcycle. Nikki didn't know if it was the bike or the little girl’s arms wrapped tight around her but for the first time in a week she felt relaxed and at peace. All that mattered now was this little girl. They pulled into the ice cream shop, got there cones and went to a table to sit down. When they sat down Sophie looked up at Nikki and asked "Is she coming back?" "Is who coming back sweetheart?" "Helen." Nikki sat there for a moment completely stunned to knowing quite what to say. "How do you know about that?" "I heard Auntie Trish and Auntie Claire talking about it." Nikki nodded. She knew it was best not to lie to her. "I don't know if your mom will come back." "Her name is Helen. She is not my mom. Mom's don't leave their children." "Well I don't know if Helen is coming back. She got into some trouble and I went to help her." "You won't let her take me will you because I want to stay here with you. Please mommy." The little girl was crying now. "No don't worry sweetheart she won't take you. She can't I would never let her." The little girl nodded satisfied with the answer she had received. Nikki knew that Helen would never try to take her away. But wondered to herself if Helen would ever try to come back.

Chapter 8
It had been 95 days since Helen had last seen Nikki. It had been hard for Helen to get clean but she just kept thinking about Nikki and Sophie, she needed to do it for them. When Helen got out of rehab she had gone back to her flat and found it just as she had left it. Well almost. It was as if Sophie had never been there at all. Sophie’s things, the pictures of her and Helen they were all gone. Now Helen was at the last place she had ever thought she would be again, Larkhall. Because she had done so well at rehab the judge had cleared all the charges so she had been able to get her job back with the lifers. The one condition though was that she had to stay clean. Monica had suggested that maybe she should go somewhere else to work, somewhere with less stress. But she couldn't this was where she felt the closest to Nikki. She knew that Nikki was not there but that’s where all the memories of them were and Helen took comfort in that. Also this was the place that broke her and she needed to beat it to prove to herself that she could. Prove it. Those words kept repeating over and over in her mind. But how could she prove it. She had tried since she got out of the clinic to find Nikki but no one would give her any information on where she was. After all the hurt she has caused she didn't blame them either. But she loved them, both of them so she had to try. She had to fight for them.

As Helen walked down the halls she began to remember. Nikki professing her love, when she kissed her in her cell, and sneaking off to the art room. These memories were happy and should have made her smile, but they just made her heart ache more. Helen had settled in the library to do some paperwork when Yvonne came in. "Well miss you are the last person I thought I would see here." "Hello Yvonne how are you?" "Surviving and you miss?" Helen looked at Yvonne and tried to so hard to hold back the tears. She had no one to talk to, but she needed it desperately. "I am getting by." "If you don't mind me asking miss. Why are you here?" "To work, to prove that I can do it and stay clean. And to remember a time when things were better." "I understand. But you do realize this isn't going to prove it to her you know." Helen just looked at Yvonne in shock. She couldn't know, could she? "I don't know what you mean." "Oh I think you do." Helen finally broke down. "I tried to find her but no one will tell me where she is. I want to prove it to her but I don't know how. All I know is that if I can come here every day and stay clean then it means I am beating this."

"I know that Nikki would not be pleased that you are back here. But I do understand. You can prove that you love her by not giving up on her. She will give you a chance when she is ready, and she will probably make you choose. This place or her, what will you chose." "Her I would give it all up to be in her arms even one more time. I just wish I could explain there is so much I wish I could say to her maybe it would make everything right once and for all." "I'll tell you what. Write her a letter and I will have it sent out to her. But you must promise not to trace the letter and locate her. It needs to be her choice." "Okay. Thank you so much Yvonne. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you." "I might just take you up on that miss."
Helen left the library and walked down the hall not realizing that someone was watching her and had heard what was said in the library. It was Robyn Dawson. The woman who had escaped and went after Helen. She had claimed that she loved Helen and escaped so they could spend there lives together. She had been captured the evening before and was being held on g-wing until there was room for her on in another prision.

Chapter 9
Robyn went to her room and curled up on her bed. Nikki she was the one, the one who is keeping my Helen from me. Helen went to the art room sat down and tried to write the letter. But what would she say. It had been so long and so many things had happened. She was in mid thought when she heard officers running past the door. What was going on she wondered they were all headed for g-wing. When she got to the wing she stood there paralyzed with fear for a moment. It was Robyn, she was here but how why it wasn't possible. This couldn't be happening. But it was and she had Yvonne. She was holding her from behind and had a piece of mirror to her throat. It didn't take long for Helen to realize what she had to do.

She walked into the wing and said. "Robyn what are you doing?" "Yvonne and I were just having a little chat about Nikki Wade." Helen wanted to scream out. But she knew that she could not let Robyn see that this name affected her.” Why don't you let Yvonne go? It is me you want isn't it?" "Yes more than you will ever know. But I can't have you not until I get rid of her." "Get rid of who?" "Nikki Wade. She is keeping us apart. It is because of her that we can't be together." "It has nothing to do with Nikki you are a prisoner in my care." "No I can see that your lying it is her it's all her fault. Once I get her out of the way we can finally be together." "Just let Yvonne go and we can talk about this. It has nothing to do with her." As Helen spoke she walked closer and closer to her making sure to keep eye contact the whole time. "Please let’s just talk you and me this is about us." Robyn lowered her head and loosened her grip.

This was the opportunity Helen needed. She lunged at Robyn pushing Yvonne out of the way. She tried to get the mirror out of Robyn's hand as they were rolling on the ground. Robyn rolled over and was now on top of Helen. "You tricked me. I thought you cared. If I can't have you know one can." Robyn screamed and lunged the mirror downwards toward Helen. Helen grabbed her arm and pushed it away from her with all of her might. Just when she thought she couldn't hold her anymore Nikki's face flashed in front of her eyes. She pushes as hard as she could turning the glass around and plunging it into Robyn’s stomach. As Robyn fell to the floor everything got hazy it was like it was happening in a dream. She could hear people calling her name and running towards her. Then it all went black.

When Helen woke up and looked around she realized that she was in the medical wing of the prison. She looked over and saw Yvonne sitting in the chair beside the bed. "I thought screws were supposed to watch the prisoners not the other way around." "Well I guess they decided this was a special occasion." "What happened?" "You saved me. Robyn went after me to get to Nikki and you stepped in." "Robyn oh my god where is she?" Yvonne just looked at the ground. She wasn't sure what to say or how she was going to say it. Helen picked up on this right away. "Yvonne where is she?" "Well she was bleeding pretty badly so they phoned for an ambulance and had her taken to the hospital. Half way there she overtook the medics and escaped." "No that’s not possible, they will get her. They have to." "There is one more thing. I had my address book in my pocket in the struggle she must have taken it. Normally it wouldn't worry me but after what happened and they found Nikki's name written in blood on the ambulance door. I think she may be going after her." "No she can’t I have to stop her. Tell me where Nikki is I have to protect her." "No we can't if Robyn see's you there it will just make her even angrier she will just want Nikki more." "We could warn her. She could pack up Sophie and run." Yvonne nodded "I will phone her right away." Yvonne was on her way out the door when Helen stopped her.

"No you can't. She will only follow them. We have to stop her once and for all. You have to stop her." "But me how? Incase you haven't noticed I am in prison I hardly think they are going to let met out for a day trip." "Well we will just have to change that then won't we?" "But I don't understand." "If I can get you out of her will you go to Nikki, will you protect her?" "Of course I would do anything for her you know that." "Well sit down and hear me out then I think I have a way to make that happen but we are going to have to do it quick." Yvonne nodded and sat there listening as Helen explained her plan. She never knew that this woman had it in her. She must really love Nikki. The doctor walked in just as Helen had finished up. “Well miss Stewart you will be happy to know that we are going to let you go home. You will need to take it easy for a few days but after that everything should be back to normal. Yvonne stood up to leave. “I will see you soon miss.” “Yes. And Yvonne. Thank you.” “ No problem miss.”

Helen made it into work on time the next day for probably the first time since she started working there. Jim Fenner was walking to the door just as Helen got to it. “Well miss your back soon.” “Yes thank you Jim. I don’t like to get behind.” As Helen took her keys she spotted Yvonne out of the corner of her eye. Well it was now or never. Helen turned and walked beside Jim then suddenly Yvonne collapsed. Helen yelled. “Jim come help me something has happened to Yvonne. Someone call for the nurse quick.” Jim leaned down to Yvonne to make sure she was still breathing as he did this Julie s bumped into him from behind pushing him onto Yvonne. “Is she okay sir?” “Yes now back up.” Just then the nurse came running out. “What’s the problem?” I was Helen who answered. “I don’t know she was just standing there and then the collapsed to the ground.” As the nurse leaned down to take Yvonne’s vital signs she started to come around. The nurse asked her. “Yvonne can you tell me what happened?” “I don’t know I just got really dizzy and everything went black.” “Okay well you seem to be alright now but I will take you down to the medical wing so that we can keep and eye on you for a little while. Just incase.” Yvonne nodded and Helen led the way unlocking the doors for them as they went. Jim and Helen stopped on the g-wing as the nurse continued on with Yvonne. She got Yvonne into a bed and checked her vital signs one more time. “Well I will leave you here to rest for a little bit. Please try to relax.” “Yes miss” Yvonne said as she lay down on the bed.

She watched the nurse leave then waited a few minutes to make sure she was gone before she sat up and pulled Jim Fenners keys from her pants. She left the medical wing and snuck down through the halls and out of the prison to a waiting car. She smiled to herself. That will teach you Fenner. She was happy to finally be on the outside but she knew her celebration would have to wait. There was some business that needed to be taken care of first.

Chapter 10
About an hour later the nurse came to check on Yvonne only to find her missing. She phoned the governor right away. They searched the rest of the prison and when they didn’t have any luck them moved onto her cell to see if there was any clue as to what might have happened. Jim was standing outside the cell talking to Karen when one of the officers came out. “Miss I think you better see this I found it inside Atkins’s pillow case.” He handed Karen an envelope. When Karen opened it she was horrified at what she saw inside. Inside the envelope was ten thousand pounds and a not that said. Fenner thanks for the freedom. Karen turned and looked at Jim right away. “Jim what is the meaning of this?” “Karen what do you mean. You know that I would never do anything like that. Even if I had I would have insisted on searching the cell myself. That bitch is just trying to stitch me up again.” Karen could feel her resolve starting to fade. She always had a soft spot with Jim. He was right if he was in on it he wouldn’t have taken a chance like letting someone else search the cell. “Alright Jim but even so I am going to have to ask you to turn over your keys and your id and go home until we can get this all figured out. Oh god no he thought my keys. He had thought at first that maybe with all the commotion he had left them at the front gate. But he had gone back to see if they were there but they weren’t. He was in the middle of looking for them when the alarm sounded. “Well Karen the thing is I don’t have my keys. I think I may have left them in the locker room.” “Really how convenient. A prisoner goes missing leaves you a note and a large sum of money thanking your for her freedom. Now we find out that you don’t have your keys. You actually expect me to believe that you had nothing to do with it?” Karen spun around and looked at two of the officers. “Will you please escort Mr. Fenner downstairs the police will be along to collect him shortly.” Helen Stewart watched from a window as the police drug Jim Fenner from the prison kicking and screaming. He was finally getting what he deserved. She couldn’t think of a better way to do it she only hoped that the rest of her plan worked as well as this part.

Chapter 11
Meanwhile on the other side of the world Nikki was getting ready for work. It was a Friday evening and Sophie was spending the night at a friend’s house so Nikki had agreed to take the evening shift at the restaurant so that Trish and Claire could spend some much needed time together. She had a bit of time before she had to be there and it was a beautiful night so she decided to ride the bike in. She was having a hard time relaxing lately. Too much going on in her head. A nice long ride was just what she needed. Nikki walked into the restaurant. It looked like the usual Friday night, so they would be busy right up until closing. Tonight though something felt different, she couldn’t put her finger on what but something was defiantly out of place. She quickly went to work helping the serving staff and managing the many crisis that came along. But still all evening something wasn’t right she almost felt as though someone was watching every move that she made. Finally it was time to close up. She helped with cleanup and when that was done said goodbye to the staff and locked all the doors. Then went to her office to get all of the paperwork from the evening straightened out.

She couldn’t though; she tried staring at it for over an hour. But her mind just kept drifting off. All she could think about was Helen and the last time she saw her. Had to made the right decision to leave her there like that. Maybe if she had told her that she loved her they could have worked thought it together. But Nikki knew better she could no longer settle for second best and that’s what would have happened. Even now that’s where Helen was back at the prison. Nikki shook her head and got up it was obvious that she wasn’t going to get any work done tonight. She might as well go home and come back early tomorrow to finish up. She put everything in the safe shut out the lights and locked up. She sat on her bike for a minute and just looked up at the stars. All these years of being free and she still cherished every part of it like it might be her last time.

She started up the bike and drove off feeling all of her tension ease away as she drove. This was her favorite time to ride no one else was out so it was just her and the road. She was about half way home when she when a set of lights come up behind her quickly. She kept a steady speed and pulled over to the edge of her lane so that they could pass her. But they didn’t they just stayed right behind her, a little too close for her comfort. She accelerated quickly to pull away and looked in her mirror hoping they had stayed back. But they didn’t they came up behind her again this time running into the back tire of her bike. She struggled to keep it on the road; finally she got it under control and straightened out. The car then came up beside her; finally she thought they are going to pass. She recognized the driver of the car as a customer from the restaurant earlier. Then before she knew what was going on the car swerved sideways knocking Nikki and the bike off the road. The next thing she knew she was on the side of the road and her bike was on top of her. She managed to get her helmet off and tried to move the bike off of her legs but she could not get it to budge. With her one hand she reached down and felt in her pocket for her phone. Crap she thought to her self, she had left her cell phone on her desk.

The woman from the car then came and stood over top of her. “So you are Nikki wade. Tell me Nikki what is so special about you?” “I don’t understand what you mean. Why are you doing this to me?” “Because you are so perfect that no one else is worthy. NO one else can hold a candle to Nikki bloody Wade. Your not so special now are you?” Nikki could fell her leg getting damp and the reality of the pain kick in. She focused on the woman and what she was saying in hopes of trying to keep herself conscious. “What are you talking about I don’t even know you.” “Well let me introduce myself. MY name is Robyn. I am the woman whose love is not good enough, the woman who keeps trying to step out of your shadow. But no mater what I do it is not good enough. I am never enough. All she wants is you. Well soon you won’t be a problem anymore.” It clicked in Nikki’s head who this was. It was the woman who had escaped and gone after Helen. “It won’t matter you know. She will always love me. Even if you kill me I will always have her heart.” “No it’s not true.” “Yes it is Helen’s heart will always belong to me. She will always be mine.” Robyn raised a gun and pointed it at Nikki. “Stop it stop saying that. It’s not true. Stop it.” “It is true and you know it so you might as well put the gun down and walk away. At least you will have your freedom. No one will ever know you were here.” Robyn lowered the gun turned around and stood there for a minute. Nikki though she had gotten through to her finally. But she spun back around pointing the gun at Nikki again. “If I can’t have her No one else can.” Nikki then heard two shots ring out then it all went black.

Chapter 12
Robyn stood there looking over the lifeless body of Nikki Wade. She wasn’t so special now wash she. Then she heard a noise beside the car. Spinning around and pointing the gun in that direction she said ‘who is it who’s there?” “It’s me Helen.” Robyn walked over and saw Helen Stewart leaning up against the car. “Well, well Miss Stewart. To what do I owe this pleasure?” “Oh I think you know why I’m here.” “Yes miss I think I do.” Robyn pulled Helen in and kissed her passionately on the lips. She could hear a soft moan escape from the small scott. She pushed her up against the car roughly shoving her hands up her skirt. She ripped off her under wear and pantyhose. Feeling that the woman was ready for her she thrust two fingers deep inside of her. “Is this what you want miss?” “Yes, yes I want you to make me cume please.” Robyn did as she was asked. Kissing down Helen’s neck as her fingers went in and out forcefully until she felt the woman’s back arch and she screamed out. “Yes oh god yes.” Robyn pulled her fingers out and kissed Helen softly on the lips. “What do you so long to get here?” “The plane was delayed but I’m here now. Where’s Nikki?” “She’s over there on the ground. I don’t think she’s going to be getting in the way any time soon.” “What did you do?” “I had to kill her to make sure she wouldn’t try to stop us.” “What you weren’t supposed to do that. Once Yvonne led you to her you were just supposed to keep the two of them holed up somewhere until we got Sophie and ran. This was never part of the plan.” Helen tried so hard to hold back her tears. She could not let Robyn see how much this was hurting her. All she had ever wanted was to get her daughter back. She never wanted this. “I’m sorry I just wanted to make sure. I know how much you wanted Sophie back.” All of the life left from Helen’s eyes at that moment. Sophie, what kind of mother could she possibly be to her? She couldn’t, she was better off with Claire and Trish. Defiantly not with a monster like her. That was when she made up her mind. “Its okay baby lets just go.” “Where to the house to get her?” “No let’s just leave. She would only get in the way. It’s just you and me from now on.” Robyn smiled and got into the drivers side of the car. As they drove away Helen looked at Nikki’s lifeless body lying on the ground. After all that she had done all the pain that she had caused. This was what she deserved, to spend the rest of her life with a monster.

The end.

Note: I made two endings for this story but the devil on my shoulder won over the angel and this one got posted first. I am not making any promises on how the other ending is but i will post it soon.

K here is the happier ending.

Chapter 12
Helen was staring out the window looking out at the potting shed. So many times she had stood there and watched Nikki without her even knowing it. She wished she was there now; she would just run right out and tell here that she loved her. Karen came running in when Helen was in mid thought. “Helen there you are. I just got and important call for you. They wouldn’t leave a name just a message. They said to tell you that Nikki was in the hospital in Toronto and that she might not make it.” Helen just stood there. This couldn’t be happening. It must be a mistake Yvonne was there and she would protect Nikki. “Helen are you alright? They don’t mean Nikki Wade do they?” Helen crumpled to the floor sobbing. Karen wrapped her arms around her and held her until the sobs slowed. When she had finally calmed down Karen asked “Helen what’s going on? Is it Nikki Wade?” “Yes it is.” “But I don’t understand why would someone phone here about her for you?” “Because I love her” Karen didn’t know what to say. She had heard rumors when Nikki was in prison but didn’t think any thing of them. “I have been in love with her for a long time I have just been too scared to do anything about it. And now well now it’s too late.” “Helen it’s not too late. Nikki is still alive you need to go and be there for her. Helen nodded and then left the prison as quickly as she could hoping she would get to Nikki’s side before it was too late.
Chapter 13
Nikki Wade stood up against the bar with her drink. A song started to play.
This time, This place
Misused, Mistakes
Too long, Too late
Who was I to make you wait
Just one chance
Just one breath
Just in case there's just one left
'Cause you know,
you know, you know

That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you'll be with me
and you'll never go
Stop breathing if
I don't see you anymore
She swore she knew it from somewhere engrossed in the lyrics she didn’t see the woman walking up to her. Helen took her hand and without a word led her out to the dance floor. They danced staring into each others eyes and not speaking a single word.

On my knees, I'll ask
Last chance for one last dance
'Cause with you, I'd withstand
All of hell to hold your hand
I'd give it all
I'd give for us
Give anything but I won't give up
'Cause you know,
you know, you know

That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you'll be with me
and you'll never go
Stop breathing if
I don't see you anymore

So far away
Been far away for far too long
So far away
Been far away for far too long
But you know, you know, you know

I wanted
I wanted you to stay
'Cause I needed
I need to hear you say
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long
So keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and, never let me go
The music ended and Nikki leaned in towards Helen. Their lips were almost touching when she heard someone calling her. “Nikki please come back to me I promise I will make things right.” Nikki turned around to see who it was. It sounded like Helen’s voice but that was impossible. Then she heard it again. “I love you please come back.” She turned back and Helen was gone then everything went fuzzy. She blinked her eyes a few times and they cleared up. She was in a hospital; she could hear the beeping of the monitors. She looked down and saw Helen with her head on the bed crying. She tried to lift her hand to touch her when the door came flying open; quickly she closed her eyes again.

“Mommy mommy I’m back did you miss me?” Sophie came flying into the room and stopped abruptly when Helen looked up at her. "What are you doing here? You can't take me; I am staying with mommy you can't make me go!" Helen wiped her eyes and cleared her throat. She could not believe how much she looked like her. But the tone, the attitude that was all Nikki. "I haven't come to take you. I would never do that. I just came to make sure that she; I mean the both of you were okay." "We are fine and we don't need you. You better leave before I yell for my auntie Claire." "No I will go please don't tell Claire I was here." Helen got up and walked to the door. She put her hand on the door knob and spoke. "I know that you may not believe me because I have not shown it very well. But I do love the both of you very much and you have been in my thoughts every day." With that Helen turned and walked out the door, tears welling up in her eyes. It was a mistake for her to come here. What made her think that she would be wanted? They had a new life, a better life without her. Maybe it was time now to go back to hers. But what kind of life would she have without them in it?

Chapter 14
Nikki pretended that she was still unconscious all day while she took some time to think. Was Helen really here or was that all just a dream too? Surely if Helen had been there then she would come back tonight after everyone left. She waited until the evening. She heard Sophie and Claire leave then it was silence for a long time. Just when she was about to give up and go to sleep she heard the door open. She opened her eyes expecting to see Helen but was surprised when she as Yvonne standing in front of her. "Well hello it's about time you woke up. Do you want me to get the nurse?" "No I am okay thank you. Yvonne how I mean why are you here?" "Are you wondering why I am here or why someone else isn't?" "No she probably ran back to her precious job. But if I remember correctly aren't you supposed to be in prison?" "Hold on here now. She did not run back to her precious job as you so nicely put it for your information she is the reason why I am not in prison right now which is also the reason you are still alive." "I don't understand."

"I will explain it to you have to promise not to interrupt me or judge until I am finished." Nikki nodded her head. "Well Helen looked for you after she got out of rehab but no one would tell her where you were. So she came back to work at Larkhall. I asked her why and she said she had to prove that she could, that she had beat her addiction. But judging by the amount of time she spent staring out at the potting shed I think the real reason was because she felt close to you there. One day her and I talked about you on the wing I guess Robyn overheard us. She went nuts and attacked me trying to find information on you. Helen jumped in and saved me. She managed to get the upper hand and stab Robyn with a piece of glass. The medics came to transport her to the hospital in an ambulance and half way there she attacked them and escaped. We knew that she would come after you because she thought it was you that stood between her and Helen. So Helen thought of a plan. She found a way for me to escape from prison and for Fenner to get the blame conveniently enough. I came over here right away. I missed you at the restaurant so I tried to catch up. I caught up just as she was pointing the gun at you. I fired but it was too late she had already pulled the trigger. I phoned Helen and she flew right over. That was three days ago, she has been sitting by your bedside every night since." "But where is she now?" "Sophie came in and found her here this morning, she said some rather not nice things to Helen and she was scared to come back." "I know I was just waking up as Sophie came in but until now I thought it was all just another dream. That doesn't change the fact that she left again. Just like always." Yvonne was getting angry now. "You know if you weren't lying in a hospital bed I would walk right over there and slap you right now. She chose you; she risked everything to keep you safe. Incase you are forgetting it is frowned upon when you work in the prison service to help a prisoner escape no matter how good the reason is. If you ask me then you don't get much more proof than that. Yvonne got up and walked out the door. Leaving Nikki alone with her thoughts.
Chapter 15
3 Months later.

Helen stood there staring out the window like she did every day. Somehow she thought that maybe if she wished hard enough Nikki would walk out of the potting shed even one last time. She had stayed in Toronto for three days after her confrontation with Sophie. Just incase Nikki found out she had been there and tried to find her. The night she was leaving she went up to the hospital she stood outside the door for a long time but just could not bring herself to go in. So she came back home. She and Karen had become good friends since she came back. They sat down and had a long talk when Helen came back. Helen explained everything well with the exception of two prison breaks. But she still missed Nikki terribly every day. Sylvia came running in pulling Helen from her thoughts. “Miss Stewart, Miss Betts needs you on g-wing right away.” “What’s going on Sylvia?” “I don’t know mam but whatever it is has cause quite a ruckus.” Helen got down to the wing as quickly as she could. She saw a large crowd gathered around the staircase. She pushed through to find Karen standing in the middle. “Karen what is going on? What’s all the commotion?” “It’s me.” Helen spun around to see where the voice was coming from. At first she thought she must be dreaming as Nikki Wade came walking down the stairs in a perfectly tailored black Armani suit. The sight of her took Helen’s breath away. “Isn’t it nice of her mam? Nikki here came to see us.” Julie.S said. “Well not exactly Julie. Actually I came to Miss Stewart.” Helen still couldn’t say anything she just stood there mesmerized by the woman. “You see Julie I have a very important question to ask Miss Stewart and it just didn’t seem right to do it over the phone.” Nikki then got down on one knee and pulled a box from her pocket. As she did she heard the gasps coming from all the women. She took Helen’s hand and spoke. “I know that it has been a bumpy road and I can’t tell you that the future will be any smoother. But what I can tell you is that from the first moment I saw you I was in love with you and together I know we can overcome any obstacle. In the past couple of years I have learned that I can live without your but the truth is I really don’t want to. So I am here today asking you to spend the rest of your life by my side. Helen will you marry me?” Helen just stood there not quite believing that any of this was happening. Then Nikki stood up and pulled Helen into her arms she leaned down and as their lips touch she could feel the sparks fly. At that moment Helen knew that she was finally where she belonged, in Nikki’s arms. She pulled back and looked into Nikki’s eyes. “Yes of course I will.” They leaned in and kissed again as the women of g-wing cheered them on.
