Title: SL interview, Irish Sunday Express
Description: [coolbyrne] {re WitB, Sep 27 2006}

I carried this around Poland and London with me after leaving Dublin! :) Found it amongst all the extra bits of paper I accumulated along the way, when I cleaned out my backpack. I looked around the board and didn't see it, but I apologize if it's already been posted.

Thanks for posting Coolbyrne!
Does anybody know what she means with congestion charge?
BadGurl - October 8, 2006 06:03 AM (GMT)
The congestion charge is a fee, (sort of like a the fees we pay at toll booths in the USA but more), that drivers who enter the city of London have to pay to encourage people to think again about using their vehicles in central London and to choose other forms of transport. The charge is supposed to reduce congestion, improve the bus, train, and underground networks, and make London a more pleasant location for residents, visitors and businesses. Operative words are "supposed to".
Thanks for posting the article Coolbyrne!!

Did you manage to see the LK interview? Becuase she mentioned her love of chocolate on that too. She said something along the lines of;
"Apparently I'm allergic, but it doesn't stop me eating it".

LOL
Didn't I see in her resume where she did at least one musical..."Oh, What a Lovely War" I think?
And...she had a credit as singing (!) in the closing credits for her first film, "The Girl in the Picture" (the only song it could be is the one playing in the background in her final scene in the bar.)

Sadly, just because someone is IN a musical doesn't mean they LIKE them. Or listen to them by choice in the cd player. Although after a horrendous babysitting experience this past weekend, I have a new theory on why Simone likes them: show tunes* are a miracle cure for screaming babies. The problem is, you have to sing them with A LOT of energy, and you can't stop. Which is tough to do for 90 minutes. I wish I didn't know this from experience, but sadly, I do.
*Except those written by Stephen Sondheim. I kid you not.

Abzug, I'm laughing my ass off! Tell me, does that god-awful song from Annie (I ain't gonna say it, don't worry) fall into the Sondheim category, perchance? :D

Shit, I can't believe I forgot about Annie! I was trying to remember every lyric to A Chorus Line and Fiddler on the Roof, but of course Annie would have been perfect (and I *definitely* know all the words to those songs). Definitely not Sondheim. Sondheim is Sweeney Todd--the musical about a man who slit people's throats and his neighbor baked the dead bodies into meat pies. Gee, I wonder why a baby wouldn't like hearing about THAT?!

Sweeny Todd is one of the only musicals I've seen that I actually liked! Annie, otoh... well. Shows to go you what I know from musicals OR babies. But if you'd like to be tortured by the Demon Barber of the Message Board, I'll try to cut into my time here & come up with a few other classics. Oh--wait, I know, wasn't there a movie adapted from a terrible musical, something bizarre about the South & some Irish guy... surely my twisted brain doesn't deceive me. You know--'How are things in gonorrhea?' <sneerk> That one.
I'm short on sleep. Run away: could get uglier.

You sang entire repertoires of showtunes in order to placate a screaming baby? omg <G> The comedic possibilities and images...
I remember some woman lost in the wilderness a few yrs. back who did the same thing in order to stomp about in the snow and gesticulate and keep herself alive...
I guess it's not all that different. ;)
(A thought on our beloved Sondheim...the dissonance is probably not that pleasant to tiny ears.)

No, it definitely wasn't. And I chose Into the Woods, which is one of his least disonant scores, but the baby was NOT having it!
But yes, singing musicals is the cure-all for everything that ails us, be it screaming babies, sub-zero arctic temperatures, or claustrophobic MRI machines.
Oh, e, the musical you refer to is Brigadoon, if I am not mistaken.
Jeanna - October 10, 2006 10:09 PM (GMT)
Umm...I think she means "Finnian's Rainbow" <G>
abzug - October 11, 2006 12:16 AM (GMT)
Shit! I always mix those two up! I even own the Finian's Rainbow recording, but listened to it once and had no interest in listening again.
Jeanna - October 11, 2006 12:50 AM (GMT)
Understandable. Both fantasy musicals. And Brigadoon...with all those scottish accents and all... <G>
I always enjoyed Patti Labelle's rendition of "Look to the Rainbow."

So Simone's carring 4.5kg extra weight around her tummy - that's heaps! :o
sophiesworld2 - October 18, 2006 01:48 AM (GMT)
I think she meant most of it around her tummy, I imagine there is probably some elsewhere too, possibly her cleavage from breast feeding.
I love musicals, I can't stand watching them on TV, but I love the real thing. I went to see Chicago 2 weeks ago (I had seen it about 4 years ago) and it was excellent, I like the songs from that. I really like Phantom of the Opera too. I can't wait to see Wicked and Dirty Dancing at the West End, I am hoping to go in November. I have never seen fiddler on the roof though. I think Starlight Express has to be one of my favs too.
