Chapter 1
It was a small service outside on a sunny day. Trish was there and a few of Nikki's friends from the club. Karen Betts went and with her she took Barbara Hunt and Yvonne Atkins. She felt that since they were so close to Nikki that they deserved to be there. No one saw the other woman standing under the trees. Helen stood there and watched as Barbara got up to say a few words. "I shared a cell with Nikki at Larkhall. At first I was terrified of her, scared that she would jump me at any moment. She always had this tough image, but it wasn't very long before I got to see the good side of Nikki. She had a big heart and would do anything for someone that was in need." Barbara looked up as she spoke and caught a glimpse of Helen under the trees. "There was one woman though who knew Nikki better than any of us. She gave Nikki hope for the future and showed Nikki what it was like to love again. I don't know if Helen ever knew just how much Nikki loved her because she had a strange way of showing it sometimes. But I know that Nikki loved her with all of her heart and that Helen gave her happiness in her darkest time. Goodbye Nikki we will all miss you and Thank you Helen for giving our friend her smile back." Barbara walked back and stood next to Yvonne. Karen spoke right away. "You don't mean Helen Stewart do you?" "Yes miss I do. Don't worry nothing ever happened but they did love each other more than I have ever saw one person love another."
Helen Stewart walked away from the cemetery thinking that she should not have gone. But she just couldn't keep herself away. It seemed ironic somehow that it took this to bring their love out into the open. She was sitting in her living room drinking a bottle of wine when she heard a knock at the door. She got up and went to answer it surprised to see Karen standing on her door step. "Karen to what do I owe this surprise." "Well Helen I have something for you and since I didn't see you at the funeral today I thought I would bring it round for you." Karen handed Helen a box. "What’s this?" "They are Nikki's belongings I thought since the two of you were so close you might like to have them." "Close I don't know what you mean." "Come on Helen you and I both know what was going on between you and Nikki." Helen took the box and looked at Karen. "I don't know what you’re talking about. Now if you don't mind I was in the middle of something very important." Then without letting Karen say another word she closed the door and walked back into the living room to finish her drink.
Helen wondered if she had sounded cold to Karen. She had not meant to but the truth was that she had shown no emotion at all since she heard the news of Nikki’s death. Somehow she had convinced herself that it wasn’t real, that somehow it was all just a dream. She couldn’t do anything without it reminding her in some way of Nikki. The houses, her car, even the book store downtown. That’s why she had decided to move, to get away from the memories and from the pain. She started to pack up her clothes and other belongings from her room. She had cleared out part of her closet and a couple of drawers in her dresser to make room for Nikki’s things. She had hoped that when Nikki got out then maybe they could move in together. Just one more dream that would never become a reality.

Chapter 2
Helen had been in San Francisco only a couple of days and already it was starting to feel like home. She had bought a small house with a large back yard. Other than going to the market she had spend all of her time at home unpacking and getting everything just the way she wanted it. She had unpacked all but one box. The one that had Nikki’s things in it. She had looked at it so many times but just could not bring herself to open it. But for some reason today she felt strangely drawn to it. So she put some music on, opened a bottle of wine and sat down on the floor in front of the box. Well, she thought to herself it was now or never. As soon as she opened the box the smell of Nikki overtook her. She did not have much for belongings. Some clothes and her books, her precious books. But when Helen went through them she realized that one was missing. For the love of Sophie the one that Helen had given to her. But why would It be missing Nikki loved that book. Maybe Barbara had taken it as a reminder of her friend. Helen took the books and carefully put them on the bookshelf. Then she took the clothes, went upstairs to the bedroom slowly folded them and put them away one by one into the dresser drawer. She then went back downstairs and out to the back garden. This would have been Nikki’s space. She would have cleaned it up and made it beautiful. Out of the corner of her eye Helen thought she saw someone in the trees. Had someone been watching her? She stood there for a long time waiting to see it again. But as the sun went down she finally gave up and went inside. She lay down in bed that night and drifted off to sleep dreaming of that night again.
Helen was sitting at the desk in her office watching the television. She was waiting patiently for them to announce the result of Nikki’s appeal. She knew she should have gone down there to be there for Nikki. But with Jim Fenner losing his job over the Dockley incident they were already short officers and as governor it was her duty to be there. It wasn’t just that though she was scared, scared of what would happen if Nikki got sent back to prison. But at least as long as she was governor she would get to see Nikki every day. Even if they could not be together. Finally the news was on. Helen turned up the volume on the TV but did not hear what she expected. “We are here at the courthouse at the scene of a recent shooting. Nikki Wade had just won her appeal and was on her way out of the courthouse a free woman when she was gunned down by former prison officer Jim Fenner. Mr. Fenner apparently blamed Ms Wade for the loss of his job. There is no word at this time on Ms. Wade’s condition. The police are now looking for Mr. Fenner who fled the scene of the crime before they arrived. They would like to warn the public that Mr. Fenner is believed to be armed and extremely dangerous.” Helen stood up still staring at the TV with tears running down her face. It couldn’t be not Nikki. She had to go and see if she was alright. As she was about to turn and leave her office she heard the door open.
Helen woke up in a cold sweat and looked around the room confused by her surroundings. Then she remembered where she was and that Nikki was gone. She thought about going back to sleep but it was 6 am already so she decided to get out of bed and face the day. She made some coffee and took it out on the back porch to drink it. She sat there thinking about what she should do with her day, deciding that she would go and explore some of the city. She had a week left before she started her new job so she might as well take that time to get to know her surroundings.
Chapter 3
It was one in the afternoon and after spending all day in the house Helen figured that it was time to get out and get some fresh air. She was just about to walk out the door when she heard the phone ringing. She ran back inside to answer it. “Hello.” “Helen my god is that you? I have been looking everywhere for you are you alright?” “Claire I’m fine why are you so worried?” “Why am I so worried well lets see. My best friend’s lover who I didn’t know she had dies and then said best friend decides to leave the country without as much as a goodbye or a forwarding number. Now ask me again why I am so worried.” “Claire I’m fine I just needed a change. I was going to call you when I got all settled in. Don’t worry about me.” “But I do worry Helen. But that is not the only reason I called. You need to get in touch with Trish Harris.” Helen’s tone went very cold. “Why do I need to contact her?” “Well she wants to know what you are going to do with your half of the club.” “What? What do you mean my half?” “Oh my god you don’t know.” “Don’t know what? Could you please tell me what the hell is going on?” “Helen Nikki had a will. She left you everything including her half of the club that she owned with Trish.” Helen didn’t know what to say. Why would Nikki have done that? “Claire I have to go I will call you soon.” Then she hung up the phone and walked out the door. She walked around for hours looking in different stores. She looked at clothes, some house appliances. The last store she stopped in was a little book store. She was looking around and could have sworn someone was standing behind her and that she could smell Nikki. She spun around quickly but no one was there. I must be going crazy she thought. There was no way Nikki could be here she’s gone I watched them burry her in the ground. Helen quickly left the bookstore and headed home.

Chapter 4
Tired from the afternoon of shopping she opened up a bottle of wine and sat on the couch to relax. She knew that she should have cried, and mourned Nikki. But she did not feel sadness only emptiness, and for the firs time in her life really lost. She had run away from Nikki so many times. Now there was no going back. Maybe she was being punished for not taking the chance when she had it. Then it finally hit her there were no more chances it was over and Nikki was never coming back. Helen curled up on the couch sobbing uncontrollably. She had never even told her that she loved her. Nikki had died without knowing. Helen cried for hours until finally exhausted she drifted off to sleep.
Helen looked at the now open door of her office. Jim Fenner was standing there with a gun in his hand. “Jim what the hell have you done? Why are you here?” “Payback miss. You and your little girlfriend have taken my life from me. You took my job, Karen, everything I had. Now it’s time for me to repay the favor. I started with your little girlfriend and now I am here for you. Only you’re not going to be as lucky as Wade was. It’s going to be a slow painful death for you. So come on Miss Lets get going before someone realizes what’s going on.” “Jim come on there are other ways lets just talk this through.” As Helen spoke she walked towards him slowly. “No I don’t think so Miss. It’s time for you to get what you deserve.” Helen was close enough now she jumped at Jim trying to grab the gun from his hand. She heard a shot ring out then felt the pain rip through her side. She could hear people yelling and running in the hallway as she collapsed to the ground clutching her side.
Helen screamed out and sat up. She looked around the room to get her bearings and clutched at her side. It was all just a dream, she was o.k. She grabbed the bottle of wine off the table and went outside with it and her glass. Sitting on the back porch staring up at the stars and drinking she wondered how she made such a mess of her life. She should be with Nikki right now still celebrating her release. Why had she been such a coward? She had it that one great love of a lifetime and now it was gone. What was there to live for now. She had lost everything. All for what, some stupid job. She stood up and walked inside deciding to try and get some more sleep. She had very little in the past few days and it was starting to mess with her mind. She took one of Nikki’s shirts out of the dresser and curled up in bed with it in her arms. Then she drifted off to sleep.

Chapter 5
Then she drifted off to sleep.
Helen was sitting in her chair clutching her side. She could see Jim pacing around the room and hear the officers in the hall. She could also hear the women in the garden. They were talking to each other wondering what was going on, and then she heard Karen’s voice. “Julie’s what happened?” “Mr. Fenner is holed up with the gov in her office. Someone said they heard a gun shot.” “Oh my god no. I got a call to come back when I was at the hospital with Nikki.” They all turned as they heard a familiar voice behind them. “What is it what’s going on? Where’s Helen?” It was Karen who spoke. “Nikki what are you doing here?” “I heard what was going on, on the news. I had to come and see if she was alright.” “Nikki you should be at the hospital resting you’ve just been shot in the arm. Why do you care so much what’s going on with Helen anyway?” “Because I love her now tell me what’s going on.” Karen just stood there in shock for a moment. Not knowing what to say. She had always wondered about Nikki’s feelings for Helen. “Jim has her locked inside her office. Someone heard a gun shot but we don’t know who or if anyone got shot.” The Helen heard Jim’s voice again. “Well it looks like your little girlfriend survived. Let’s see if she is dumb enough to try and come in here to save you.” “Nikki” Helen whispered.
Helen woke up calling out Nikki’s name. She could smell her so she must be there some where. She searched the room frantically with here eyes and calling out for her. Then she remembered the shirt and that Nikki was gone. It must have been the smell from the shirt that triggered her dream. Realizing that she probably wasn’t going to get any more sleep she put some clothes on and decided to go for a walk. She walked to a cliff that she had seen the day before. It had such a beautiful view of the ocean. She stood there looking and listening to the as crashing against the shore as she spoke to herself. “What do I do now? How do I go on my life is nothing without you in it.” She began to walk closer and closer to the edge. Finally it hit her, a way that they could be together again forever. She was just about to step over the edge when she heard a voice calling her name. It was Nikki. “No” Helen screamed. “You’re gone.” Then she heard it again. “Helen please, no. Please come back to me.” It sounded so real. Helen looked over the cliff then behind her. She finally turned around and walked back the way she came. Towards the sound of Nikki’s voice.
Helen blinked her eyes a few times and looked up. “Nikki.” She whispered. “I am here darling. You’re safe now everything is going to be o.k.” “I thought I lost you.” “Never sweetheart, I will always be here.” Then Nikki leaned in and kissed Helen softly as the guards cuffed Fenner's lifeless body on the floor.
Helen woke up and looked around the room. She could hear the monitors beeping and see Karen sitting beside the bed. “Nikki where is she?” Helen asked. Karen looked surprised by the sound of the woman’s voice. “She is in another room. They wouldn’t let her see you because she’s not family. The only reason they let me in was because I told them I was here for your protection. Besides she needed to get her arm stitched up. She ran out of the hospital last time before they got a chance to do it.” “Karen what happened? It’s all a little fuzzy right now.” “Well Jim blamed you for his life falling apart. He shot Nikki on the steps outside the courthouse. Then he came to Larkhall to kidnap you, only you put up a fight. In the struggle the gun went off and you got shot. Nikki heard the news that there was a hostage situation at the prison and came right down to see if you were alright. I don’t know how she did it but some how she convinced them to let her up to your office to talk to Jim. I think what she said was ‘wouldn’t you rather loose the life of an ex con then the life of one of your officers.’ She convinced Jim to let her in then overpowered him and got a hold of the gun.” “Did she kill him?” “No she hit him over the head with the gun. He was out cold when the police came barging in. She loves you very much you know Helen.” “I know. Can you pleas get her for me.” Karen nodded and went out to get Nikki.
Nikki followed her back into the room but would not make eye contact with Helen. “Hiya Nikki. How are you?” “I am o.k. down one arm for a while but it wasn’t my good one so I should be alright. How about you Miss?” “I am fine thanks to you. Why did you do it Nikki? Why did you risk your life to save me?” “You know why.” Nikki looked over at Karen then back down at the ground. “I need to hear it Nikki please tell me.” Nikki looked Helen in the eyes now as she spoke and her tears started to fall. “Because I love you. I know that there is no us but when I heard what was going all I could think about was you. Never being able to see your face again or hear your voice even just for a moment in passing. My life would be nothing without you.” “Oh Nikki I love you so much. I am sorry I have been such a coward. All that matters is you. I know I screwed up but if you will let me I will spend the rest of my life proving to you that you are the most important thing in it.” Nikki just stood there not knowing what to say. She never expected to hear those words come out of Helen’s mouth. “Nikki say something please.” “Do you really mean it Helen? Cause I don’t think I could handle the let down if you don’t.” “Of course I do more than anything.” Nikki walked over and leaned down kissing Helen softly on the lips. Karen cleared her throat and Helen looked up surprised and said “Oh Karen I am so sorry I forgot you were here.” “That’s o.k. I should be going anyhow and you need some rest.” “Thank you so much for everything Karen.” “You are a lucky women Helen. Not many people would have done what Nikki did for you.” “I Know Karen I know” Karen walked out the door without another word. The two women looked into each others eyes mesmerized by what they saw. Love, devotion and the future.
