Title: .srt files for subtitles

Help me said the fly!
Ok. So I finally found English-language subtitles for this movie I've got. I can't get them to work with the movie. They're the identical title. I've changed it to a one-word title in case the software had a problem with a longer title. Nothing. Any suggs?

You know, I had the same problem with a movie a while back. What player are you using?

Have tried this with a variety of players--current problem child is an AVI file, so I've tried Winbloze, Nero Showtime, etc. I've tried burning it to cd & running it on my Phillips divx-friendly player at home (which is the ultimate point of this exercise). Nada, ergo me be posting here. :(
I did have this issue before & it was because I'd stupidly thought the files had the identical title but they didn't. But have triple-checked & that's not the issue. The AVI file is Mpg4, Gspot said correct codecs installed. So *that* shouldn't be a deal either.

Just had a thought. I have a very old version of BS Player on the computer, before it became uber-spyware. Back in the day it was excellent for me to use when I had to tweak aspect ratios, etc.: it's also good w/subtitles.
It played FINE on BS Player: it's the only player I know that lets you select certain qualitied for subtitles. And son of a b if it didn't have an option for "transparent". I deselected it--and lo, suddenly the freakin subtitles appeared.
What in the name of god is up with THAT? Too weird. I mean, who distributes invisible subtitles, & how do I get em visible otherwise?
Oh sh**, I know. You're gonna tell me to get subrip & do something with that, right? It's gotta be the only solution. *(%) me, I'm gonna be here half the evening learning another new program.
...
:party
Um. If there's some less painful option pls let me know. This is not really making sense. Transparent subtitles? Surely some obscure joke at my expense by the electronic gods, no?

Heh, ekny, you panic easily. Just keep telling yourself that technology is your friend. ;)
No, what I was going to suggest was to download a little program called VobSub. You can get it here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Vi...cs/VobSub.shtmlIt's freeware, so no problems there. Install it and, for me, it worked in Windows Media Player. I notice the description says that it works in all players, but that wasn't the case on my computer.

Okay, will try tomorrow, thanks. It works as a filter for media players, according to the description, so I could theoretically then play these movies on the computer. But it doesn't address the problem of burning them to disc & (theoretically) playing them at home on a tv w/the divx-player, does it? I mean... I try them out first at work: if the subs show up, I know it'll play at home. Otherwise burning them seems a waste; I've tried it a number of times already with these movies & it's just not happening. Iow I thought there was something I needed to do differently on the technical end to make the subs show up...?

Hi ekny,
I currently adding english subtitles to a dutch show that had a lesbian storyline (have 2 clips uploaded on youtube) so i know a little about subtitles.
Vobsub is recommended on videohelp.com, but i had problems installing it. If you have a file with the subtitles you can download Subtitle Workshop and check it with the clip you have. (in Subtitle workshop you can syngronate it to audio) If all is well you can attach it to the avi file in AutoGK or VirtualdubMod.
It won't be easy, but if I can do it so can you!
ps: on videohelp.com they are all talking about .ssa files. That is the best way to add subtitles. Perhaps that is your problem.

Hi Jules2, Ok, I'll check that out next week too. I've never had to bother with this stuff before: if I burn a cd with a movie & a separate .srt file, my player usually just picks it up. You hit the "subtitle" key before telling the movie to play & that's it, it just... works.
