If it contains the very badly performed City of Prague Philarmonic's version of Predator, I'm really scared... Some of the worst percussions I've ever heard...
ESB - July 9, 2006 09:48 AM (GMT)
Yeah everything is performed on that CD by The City Of Prague Philharmonic. That orchestra doesn't really excite me. But I never got excited by recordings that are not the original or not conduced by Alan. Even McNeely's version of Forrest Gump and Debney's versions of BTTF and Who Framed Roger Rabbit were disappointing.
BigMacGyver - July 9, 2006 11:36 AM (GMT)
Although a Silvestri release from Silva was overdue, I am afraid this will just be another recycling sampler of their worn out City Of Prague recordings. On the other hand, True Grit sounded pretty neat and if this compilation really contains some new suites of previously unreleased music with solid performance I will gladly buy it.
If it contains performances of the following music I will have to have it:
A Cop and a Half, Super Mario Bros., Siegfried & Roy and The Polar Express
These should rock even with a not so convincing performance.
Anakin McFly - July 9, 2006 12:43 PM (GMT)
It was John Scott that rerecorded WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, and Joel McNeely's versions of FORREST GUMP & JUDGE DREDD weren't bad at all, although it's true that Silvestri's sound is the most difficult sound to be performed well by another conductor...
tjguitar - July 9, 2006 07:20 PM (GMT)
The cover art is at AMAZON UK, it has a track listing but it's not very helpful as it says 'main theme' without the movie.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000GLL0VG/Looks like the track listing is at play.com
http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/1094345/Fi...ri/Product.htmlWho Framed Roger Rabbit appears to be hte only new recording.
Anakin McFly - July 9, 2006 09:15 PM (GMT)
The cover looks really cheap ? The Delorean is obviously not the time machine we all know... cheap way to have a BTTF picture I guess.
The titles choice is not bad but rather very restricted. The tracklisting should have contained some famous movies like Romancing the Stone, Super Mario Bros, Death Becomes Her, Blown Away, Forrest Gump, Mousehunt, Stuart Little, Lilo & Stitch, Tomb Raider 2, Van Helsing and The Polar Express. Once again, a very commercial album, but if it can spread the word that Alan Silvestri is a huge composer...
BigMacGyver - July 9, 2006 09:44 PM (GMT)
Well, that's one poor presentation if you ask me. The cover is just so boring, simple without any real meaning. I mean why does it have to be a delorean from BEHIND? Almost as uninteresting is the selection. All Silvestri-evergreens. Where are the many hidden gems that Alan's filmography offers? Where are the more recent highlights? Where are the unsung pearls?
Let's just take a closer look:
1. BTTF - Main Theme: okay, we have figured out how it sounds by now.
2. Predator - Main Theme: As if the theme is anything representative for the great score
3. The Abyss - End Credits: unreleased but nothing that special if you have the OST
4. The Bodyguard - Love Theme: First real plus.
5. WFRR - Eddie's Theme: Out of all the great cues, they choose the most boring one.
6. TQATD - Main Title: Why not a nicely recorded suite of highlights instead?
7. Judge Dredd - Suite: I like that much better!
8. Volcano - Suite - Raise your hand if you don't know it!
9. Contact - End Credits: What? No Forrest Gump instead?
10. TMR - Main Theme: No thanks! End Credits please!
Well, as a Silvestri fan I may get it just for the sake of having another Silvestri CD during a dry-spell but otherwise this album is really a complete joke.
tjguitar - July 9, 2006 09:59 PM (GMT)
I'm assuming that The Mummy Returns track is the same one from 2002's The Fantasy Album which Tom Daish described "Both Goldsmith's and Silvestri's Mummy scores are well presented, even if Silvestri's suite, which is a back to front version of the suite from the original album, sounds like it has finished halfway through."

I have doubts about if I should include that album in the discography of the AS site... I always tried to avoid those second rate re-recordings. I mean where's the line? They even have released cheap electronic versions of Alan's music like BTTF on synthesizer compilations. But Tom Daish said that TMR was performed quite well, so who knows with this one.

You should wait and listen to it when it will be released... if it's good enough, you can put in alan's compilations :)
(only a suggestion of corse) :P
Sincerely i'm quite bored about these re-recordings and compilations, where only 1 or 2 tracks are usually interesting, expecially for people (like me) who gots almost all Silvestri's official releases.
Anyway, I completely agree with Anakin's:

I like Joel McNeely's suite from Forrest Gump or John Scott's suite from Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Voyages album), but Alan's sound is too personal to give same emotions through re-recordins (in my personal opinion of corse). :)

I said this earlier, but I think I was wrong. This appeared on the JAZZ IN FILM cd from 2003.
Assuming this is the same track anyway, then it's by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. The rest, likely by Prague.

I am really surprised about silva's hesitation to go beyond evergreens. Here is a little overview of cues from silvestri-scores re-recorded by the city of prague philharmonic which eventually found their way on (Silva) compilations:
The Abyss - suite
Back To The Future - theme
The Bodyguard - On the job, Love Theme
Contact - end credits
Fandango - various cues
Judge Dredd - suite
The Mummy Returns - apparently features the end titles as well
My Stephmother is an Alien - The Klyston
Predator - main theme
The Quick and the Dead - suite
Super Mario Bros. - main title & prison chase
Volcano - suite
Who Framed Roger Rabbit - Eddie's Theme
They basically only choose the cues from their own catalogue, so if you don't own any silva samplers with these recordings you might want to invest. However, it would have been nice for collectors if they would have done the additional work of licencing the other city of prague recordings from the edel label (Fandango, Super Mario Bros). Correct me if I am wrong, but Edel seems to be a company related to Silva so licencing should not be a big problem and the cues would have made the album much more interesting. Why My Stephmother is an Alien did not made the cut though is beyond me.

I hope nobody from Silva Screen will read this thread, considering we're so negative :D
Ah well, let's look at the bright side and be more positive. It's certainly better than nothing.
Anakin McFly - July 12, 2006 07:34 PM (GMT)
One positive opinion though :
It's a very nice compilation for those who wanna discover Alan Silvestri. I remember when I bought the Voyage Compilation back in 1995 and discovered all the wondrous themes (many that I knew from the movies) and fell in love with it ! If I discovered this CD today, I would be very bored I guess, but at the time I was thrilled.
I think I will buy the CD anyway, because I don't own many Silva previous compilations containing rerecordings of Silvestri, and as a fan I'm a very curious to hear how they all sound.

Silva doesn't own these recordings. As you mentioned, these were recorded by Edel in the early 90s. So for Silva to use these, they would theoretically have to pay Edel (if they are even still available for licensing.)
By the way, Edel also recorded Young Guns II, Mac & Me and Back To The Future III. THe first on their western sampler and the latter two on their sci fi sampler.
BigMacGyver - July 13, 2006 04:18 PM (GMT)
In that case, an Edel Silvestri Sampler would be much more interesting for me than a Silva Silvestri Sampler. Just look at this possible track listing:
Back To The Future Part III - Main Titles (?)
Fandango - Selections (five or more cues - more than 20 minutes)
Super Mario Bros - Main Title & Prison Chase
Young Guns 2 - Main Theme (?)
My Stephmother is an Alien - The Klyston
Mac & Me - Main Theme
Fingers crossed that Edel (or whoever owns that stuff now) will put out something like that, maybe bundled with new recordings of more recent scores.

and I messed up, BTTF: III was on their Fantasy compilation, not the sci if one.
BigMacGyver - July 13, 2006 04:25 PM (GMT)
Well, those would make a nice compilation. Anybody knows what Edel's status is right now? Are they still putting out compilations like that?
tjguitar - July 13, 2006 04:38 PM (GMT)
Nope. The most recent that I know of, they released a "Greatest Sci Fi Themes of the 20th Century" in 2000-ish, which used recordings from their sci fi compilation and licensed some star wars tracks from silva.

Yes. Goldsmith and Silvestri (Aug in UK, Sep in US) are the next two after Williams/Horner (July in UK, Aug in US)

I have received my copy yesterday and I must say that it's not as bad as I expected it to be.
The new recording of eddie's theme and the end credits from the Mummy Returns are definitely very good performances and most of the others are quite solid at least. Only Volcano is a real bummer in terms of performance. Overall, its not as bad as Debney's The Back To The Future Trilogy re-recording.

Thanks for your opinion ! I will certainly give it a try...

Hope this helps some of you with your decision wether or not to buy this thing.

I just received it and listened to it once in my car today. Not bad at all. Only the rhythms in the beginning of Predator was quite bad in my opinion. Could be album page worthy.
