Title: Michael Clayton: new project
ESB - July 17, 2006 07:02 PM (GMT)
It's already running on my site a few days but it seems James will score "Michael Clayton", a drama thriller starring George Clooney. It will probably open early 2007. I saw it on the LitW site.

Good news. I think we have something here. I hope the movie will be good enough to inspire James.

Really? How do you know? When did that happen? Any additional infos?

Two or three composers already have on their websites what functions they preformed (orchestration, additional score [Stuart M . Thomas]) and one orchestrator who listed having just done it.

Michael Clayton (George Clooney) is an in-house “fixer” at one of the largest corporate law firms in New York. A former criminal prosecutor, Clayton takes care of Kenner, Bach & Ledeen’s dirtiest work at the behest of the firm’s co-founder Marty Bach (Sydney Pollack). Though burned out and hardly content with his job as a fixer, his divorce, a failed business venture and mounting debt have left Clayton inextricably tied to the firm. At U/North, meanwhile, the career of litigator Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton) rests on the multi-million dollar settlement of a class action suit that Clayton’s firm is leading to a seemingly successful conclusion. But when Kenner Bach’s brilliant and guilt-ridden attorney Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson) sabotages the U/North case, Clayton faces the biggest challenge of his career and his life.
The gripping score is by James Newton Howard (King Kong).
Warner Bros. opens MICHAEL CLAYTON on October 5.

I have already received the disc and I am not really satisfied with it. This score is a dull non-event and I dont like to say that. You can read more at my website.

I think this makes us all eager to see what James has in store for The Waterhorse. I didn't really like what he's been doing recently. Not sure if I can count on "I Am Legend" so I'm hoping that "The Waterhorse" at least is going to bring back the very James Newton Howard we all know and love. :hmm:
BigMacGyver - September 21, 2007 10:38 PM (GMT)
I only wish michael clayton would have been closer to something depressing yet colourful like falling down instead of this anonymous droning he did instead and which has become a routine for him since batman begins.
I also hope that waterhorse will be a return to good form for him. This genre always brought out the best in him, so there is hope. I am not so sure about I am legend though. It's horror/action, so it could have potential for a dark action score but it could also come along as rather exchangeable. Well see... or hear ;)

I don't think this score is that bad as some people said it is. It's more about mood and atmosphere so I guess depends on what kind of mood are you when you listen to it.
Lee - October 15, 2007 07:23 PM (GMT)
Hey look this guy think like me, heh I'm not alone:
http://www.soundtrack.net/albums/database/?id=4630&vote=10I told you it's all about mood. "I'm Not the Guy You Kill" is a very cool cue.

George Clooney is now looking sharp at the
JNH homepage :smoke:
I finally found some good artwork I could use (and finally found some time to update the site again). The official site didn't have any good artwork I could use. I think the Varese CD cover used the official USA poster. I don't like it all. I think the picture I used is the European version of the poster (that they use in Holland). Would have been much better for the CD release. Did anyone see that poster too in their country?
Lee - October 19, 2007 08:51 AM (GMT)
Yes, it's a lot better than the CD cover but hey you should upgrade the site soon (don't let Clooney to stay too long it will attract women :D ) with WaterHorse, the CD cover for this one looks excellent.
ESB - October 19, 2007 09:04 AM (GMT)
Yes, I will have a problem. I have to choose between 3 films in December. I will only make a promo image of 1 film. I'm also thinking of promoting The Water Horse, but I'm Legend is also a big film... :hmm:

I must say that I am not so disappointed by this score as most are. It's quite different and in my opinion better than The Lookout though. James has created an interesting and impressive electronic atmosphere. Quite different than he ever did before. But it's more a "sound-design score" than Freedomland and therefore Freedomland seems better to me now and is more melodic. But the sound design in Michael Clayton is top-notch and quite cool. And James always makes sure to give it some class. I am also reading good critics from film critics about the score's suitability in the film.
Remarkable is that Jim Hill hasn't worked on this highly electronic score. I see his name appear less and less. He used to be James' electronic right-hand man and worked on every score. He did some great electronic work on scores like A Perfect Murder and Primal Fear that also had a heavy focus on electronics just like Michael Clayton (only less). It seems Stuart Thomas, Chris Bacon and Mel Wesson are slowly taking over his work?

Certainly, and most likely because this was also mixed at remote control productions. James is using the zimmer facilities and personal more and more.

This is also my opinion. I like it more than "The Lookout". "I'm Not The Guy You Kill" and "25 Dollars Worth" are very impressive, the best cues.

Oh man! Dude! Michael Clayton's score is nominated for OSCAR! Totally unexpected. I mean, who would have thought that this one would be getting the green light for Oscars? Certainly not me! Way to go James!
http://www.oscar.com/nominees/Now, wouldn't it be ironic if this is going to James' first Oscar?
ESB - January 23, 2008 09:34 AM (GMT)
Wow, this very surprising! Congratulations to James :)
Lee - January 23, 2008 04:16 PM (GMT)
I don't care about the oscars but congratulations to James!
