Title: The Water Horse
mr.caliente - January 14, 2007 11:03 PM (GMT)
Some exciting news-- James Newton Howard will be scoring the fantasy film "The Waterhorse" which is to be released in September of this year.
From director Jay Russel's myspace:
Just a brief note to tell you how excited I am that I just signed James Newton Howard on to compose the score for "The Waterhorse." I loved his scores for "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs." I thought both pieces had a wonderful combination of tension and mysticism. Not the easiest musical feat to accomplish.

Nice find.
But is there any other source yet to confirm this info?
justin boggan - January 15, 2007 02:31 AM (GMT)
Well, I guess he'll just have to produce Jay Ruseell's blood, eh? ;)
I wonder why he didn't choose his past composer, William Ross.
BigMacGyver - January 15, 2007 06:13 PM (GMT)
I hope emile will give us some first-hand confirmation of this. A lot of stuff is being written on myspace these days, so you never know... and soundtrack.net or film music radio don't seem to know about it either.
Lee Hayward - January 15, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
My, what a project. If it's true, that is.
IMDB Plot Outline: A lonely boy discovers a mysterious egg that hatches a sea creature of Scottish legend.
JNH + Fantasy + Scottish influences = ???
Very intriguing, I hope this is a go-ahead.

Well, it said "just signed", so I guess not many people kow yet. But you guys could try e-mailing Blake Neely, Stuart M. Thomson, Jeff Atmajian, Alex Kharlamov, Julia Newmann ... someone working for him might know by now.

Yeah there's no confirmation, but I actually read about it on kongisking.net, a fan site for Peter Jackson's King Kong. They've been posting a bunch of stuff from Jay Russel's myspace about "The Waterhorse."
That's the only reason why I would consider it to be a valid myspace for Russel, but who knows. Hopefully we'll get some confirmation soon.
ESB - January 17, 2007 09:10 PM (GMT)
I got an official confirmation. Seems like a super project! An adventure fantasy film seems very promising for James. He is a master at it.
And we all know that if James scores films with "water" in it we can expect something remarkable ;)
N.P. Treasure Planet :music:

Good, good, good!
Now that's something to look forward to for sure!
Masterpiece = James . Water ^2. The power two reffers to fantasy part of the score.
Don't believe me? Reffer to Einstein's Theory of Relativity. :D
BigMacGyver - January 18, 2007 12:29 AM (GMT)
Great news.
I am thirsty for more watery scores from James! Bring them on!
Thank you very much emile for this confirmation. You are really THE ultimate source of info when it comes to James and Alan.

Woohoo!Fantastic project! :smoke:
Another plot outline, from Wikipedia:
Set in the 1930s, a girl named Kirstie and her brother, Angus, discover an egg after a storm and take it home. To their surprise this egg hatches into a kind sea monster they name Crusoe. It grows, until finally it is too big to live anywhere but in nearby Loch Ness. The Waterhorse (Wikipedia)

He is the best!
And I also see an egg :D . "Egg Travels" from Dinosaur comes to my mind. A theme for the egg would be so nice.
I'm very happy that James choose this kind of movies.
BigMacGyver - February 28, 2007 08:35 PM (GMT)
The release date was pushed back from September 21st to December 25th this year. Interesting. They are making this a christmas release.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! :D
Water Water Water
I am excited after Lady in the WATER, WATERworld and Atlantis!!!
Lee Hayward - May 28, 2007 10:17 AM (GMT)
Just realised that William Ross' scores for the last two Jay Russell films (Ladder 49 and Tuck Everlasting) were pretty heavily temp-tracked. I hope this will not be the case this time round.
:/
justin boggan - June 27, 2007 08:28 PM (GMT)
Being the ever curious fudger that I am, I asked if the score was recorded, and yeah -- it's already been.
I assume he's onto/getting to to record some other score.
ESB - July 6, 2007 08:29 AM (GMT)
The official site has been opened and a trailer has been released:
http://www.thewaterhorse.com/It looks great! This project must have been fun for James. It reminds me a bit of Dinosaur. Looks very promising.
Also check out the blog of the director Jay Russel. Around May and April he talks about James' score which he calls "brilliant" :smoke:

Hm, theres music playing in the background which has a certain JNH ring to it even though the piece seems to be rather short.

Yeah but surely you have heard the introductory music? That piece sounds pretty grand and epic, I like it. I really can't wait for this score, especially now that I know that The Chieftains were involved in the recording.
:)

"Another lovely score from James and there is also a guest appearance from The Chieftans to add that special Celtic flavour."
Recorded at Abbey Road with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Posted this back in August on ScoreReviews, but I couldn't get logged in here to post here, until now.

Also the last video blog has some great scottish music.
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/thewate.../blog/index.phpI was afraid that the score would be more comedy than drama (maybe because of that trailer). But everything I heard until now from the videos blog is great and it seems that there is some emotional music, too. I hope there is a good balance between comedy - adventure and drama.
Lee Hayward - November 9, 2007 03:09 PM (GMT)
I wonder if there will be a video blog about James' music.
:)
Lee Hayward - November 15, 2007 03:52 PM (GMT)
If you head over to Jay Russell's MySpace page, he has posted 3 short video clips of the recording sessions at Abbey Road for The Waterhorse. They are very short and not brilliant quality but worth looking at.
