Title: Basil Poledouris
Description: Now definitely among my favorites!
BigMacGyver - October 20, 2004 09:08 PM (GMT)
:yahoo: I have received my order from buysoundtrax.com today including 5 discs: Big Wednesday, Flesh & Blood, The Fury, Basic Instinct and Supergirl. I have been curious about the two Poledouris Scores, because everybody is praising both (especially Big Wednesday) and so i immediately listened to both poledouris scores! Both really surprised me and it feels like i realy have added some nice gems of this great composer. Poledouris music is more and more growing on me with every new Poledouris score i listen to.
The music from Flesh & Blood is somehow similar to Conan and maybe that's the reason why i like it so much. After listening to Flesh & Blood and Big Wednesday, i will definitely seek for more of his music. Maybe you guys can recommend any more Poledouris music :) ? Someone already mentioned Lonesome Dove i think, is it similar to Quigley Down Under? And how is Flyers/Fire On The Mountain, or Wind or... Damn, there is so much ;)

I think Lonesome Dove is his best score (if you have not seen the film then check it out as well...the music will mean a lot more after seeing the film). I also like The Hunt for Red October.

Poledouris is an excellent composer. Here are some that you got to check out:
- Robocop
- Farewell to the King
- The Hunt for Red October
- Free Willy 1 and 2
- The Jungle Book
- It's My Party
- Starship Troopers (the complete score of course!)
- For Love of the Game
Wind is an alright electronically-oriented score, but not too special though. Quigley Down Under didn't rock my boat, so to speak.

FLESH & BLOOD is one of my most beloved Poledouris scores, here's the ones no one should miss in my opinion :
Robocop/Robocop 3
Flesh + Blood
Conan the Barbarian/Conan the Destroyer
Starship Troopers
Free Willy
Lonesome Dove
Big Wednesday
Cherry 2000
Hunt for Red October

Nice music site, Emile! I think i will go for the Cherry 2000/No Man's Land and Wind prometheus releases next.
BTW, i have heard about an isolated score track on the Starship Troopers DVD. Is this the source of the complete score or is there a complete promo?
goomba - June 24, 2008 10:31 AM (GMT)
The DVD isolated score must be the source of the majority of circulating bootlegs.
There is no complete official promo, but I could be wrong.
But I had some Starship Troopers unreleased tracks (complete and along with unused cues even!) on a White Fang boot !
Basil Poledouris is my favorite composer, along with Silvestri. From both, I prefer their "testosterone"-oriented scores, but I much more pleased with the more "personal" efforts from Poledouris than Silvestri (I like better Basil's use of synthezisers - especially in scores from the 80's). But, it's true that Basil never scored much comedies, which, I find a bit too present in Silvestri's filmography (I prefer his dark side  ).
BigMac, you mentionned Quigley Down Under as a possible buy, and I believe it's a very strong score from Basil : thematically warm, memorable and powerful, with very punchy action material and absolutely delightful emotionnal cues.
Too lesser know scores from him that I like too are Amanda (with lots of Americana), Amerika (very dramatic), Switchback (great theme! and very well constructed score) and Free Willy (only too short!). Les Misérables may be his most depressing score, but among his most sophisticated too.

Oh wow, that is certainly an old topic of mine. I posted this almost 4 years ago! :omg:
Needless to say my poledouris collection has since increased enormously and by now i even found out there IS an official unofficial starship troopers expanded promo (which has slightly thinner sound than the iso-score, yet some pieces are uncut and have even electronic elements that werent used in the finished film mix).
How time flies :D
Too bad he passed away so suddenly. I was looking forward to anything that guy would ever do. Now any poledouris cd that comes out is a blind purchase for me, just like iron eagle in the last varese club batch.

When I was at the Soncinemad Film Music Conference in Madrid last year I almost bought the Cherry 2000/No Man`s Land soundtrack and I somewhat regret that I did not buy it. However I did buy Silvestri`s Romancing The Stone and Graeme Revell`s Pitch Black/Bride of Chucky soundtracks instead.
Those of you that have the "first" Robocop 1 CD soundtrack, have you also bought the rerelease with those few extra minutes of music and if you did, was it worth it?
goomba - June 25, 2008 09:21 AM (GMT)
I've got both.
And... well... It depends if you're a huge fan of Poledouris or not.
The extra seconds of bonus tracks all come from the false TV ads in the movie (the SUX car ad, the War family game ad, the artificial heart ad...). However there are still some short cues unreleased, like a statement of the Robocop theme when he's patrolling at night in the car.
One silly thing is that the re-release does feature only one take of the two that were present on the first edition of the score of the cue "Robo Tips His Hat" (the "sad theme"). But one of theme had wrong notes in the strings... and they remastered and re-released the wrong take! The good one is only on the old cd... :D

I'm keeping my "old CD" anyway...
By the way, i've just ordered Iron Eagle (along with BIG from Howard shore, one of my most beloved soundtrack and never took the chance to have it in a legal form from varese CD Club)
justin boggan - June 26, 2008 05:36 AM (GMT)
There were 2CD boots of Troopers before the isolated score, for many years. The best combination of the isolated score and the bootlegs I have seen is the one on Majestyx's site.

I am also awaiting Iron Eagle, it should arrive any day now. Especially since the order I did after that one has arrived.
Anakin, I should also order Shore`s BIG. I am no fan of Howard Shore but this is one of the few Shore scores that I like.

BigMacGyver - June 26, 2008 08:42 PM (GMT)
They start shipping them on june 30th... and i am counting the minutes! Can't wait to receive that magnificent bernstein-box.
Anakin McFly - June 26, 2008 08:59 PM (GMT)
I didn't took the Bernstein box, because it's too expensive for only one score that I'm really fond of (Natty Gann)... Too bad it's not sold separately ! Bad move from varèse in my opinion, coz it only aims the Bernstein absolute fans, and not the Natty Gann's fans or the Bersntein casual fans like me...
