Title: PC games

ESB - March 13, 2005 09:06 AM (GMT)
Okay, I have a small hunch that some of you play video games :D

I'm also pretty addicted. Okay everybody lists his stuff here.

I have:

Videocard: GeForce FX 5900 Ultra 256 MB (from ASUS)
Monitor: IIyama 22 inches (oh yeah!)
CPU: 2,7 GHz - AMD Athlon XP 2700+
Motherboard: NVIDIA nForce 2 chipset (ASUS A7N8X)
Soundcard: Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 and 5.1 dolby surround system from Cambridge Soundworks

Favorite game genre: Adventure, First person shooters, Simulations
Favorite games: The Longest Journey, X - Beyond the Frontier space simulation games, Mafia, Far Cry, Half Life games, Silent Hill games, Syberia games, No One Lives Forever games, Monkey Island Games (Guybrush Threepwood! :D), Clive Barker's Undying, etc.
Currently addicted to: Max Payne 2

I'm trying to buy World of Warcraft but it's sold out everywhere. Anyone has it?

I'm also thinking about buying the GeForce 6800 Ultra but it needs a power supply of 480W and TWO extra power cords!! :suicide:

BigMacGyver - March 13, 2005 10:05 AM (GMT)
When i was younger i have been really addicted to PC games but it is not so much anymore, mostly because of the lack of time.

Favorite Genres: RPG, round based Strategy, Adventure, Simulations
Favorite Games: Thief 1-3, Alpha Centauri, Civilisation 3, Baldur's Gate 1-2, Ultima Online, X-Wing Alliance, Sim City 1-3, Max Payne, Mafia, Operation Flashpoint, Diablo 2

Currently addicted to: Civilisation 3

From adventure games i really love the Thief games. The atmosphere in these games is so strong and the stories are so great that you just can't stop playing. Alpha Centauri is probably the best round based strategy game i have ever played. It is so old but never gets boring, mostly because of the great plot and the individual groups. These are all games which would work perfect as movies imo.

Hardware: well... it works and thats all we need to know ;)

Pogel - March 13, 2005 10:10 AM (GMT)
I used love videogames, too, but I haven’t played too many lately, they tend to absorb me too much and I rather do something creative instead.
Hence, my Hardware mirrors that:
Videocard is a gf 440 MX (I think)
Monitors: 2x Siemens Nixdorf 21" , but that is only useful for Flighsimulator (for which I also have the Flight Sim Yoke)
CPU: 1700 Athlon
1500 MB Ram.
I use that PC mostly for graphics and music software, so I play with the thought of making my next computer a MAC...
--------------------------
My favourite games are:

Grim Fandango: This game is just perfect. You totally live in that world. The score by Peter McConnell is Oscar-worthy, the backgrounds are beautiful, the riddles logical and the story and characters better then most movies'.
Deus Ex: Another game which’s characters and story totally absorbs you and you live in that world. The Gameplay is also great, so many little details, relative freedom and yet a very strong story line.

I like all parts of GTA, it's of course also very movie-like, but it doesn't quite capture the spirit like the two above.
Half-Life 1 has been great, Opposing Force was fine. I never played HL 2 and I don't plan to, after I saw it at a friend's. It's just not HL anymore. Stupid future scenario, stupid ever-spawning enemies. And there's not a care in the world for your character anymore.

Honorary mentions are:
Age of Empires 2, a game I can play forever...though it ends up me sitting behind 3-4 lines of thick walls, building an invincible army and mowing down all the enemies. But it's truly great fun.
Jedi Knight 1-3: You've got to love lightsaber action. That's also the only game I occasionally play online.
Zedla: Both the SNES and the N64 game(s) are fantastic, to bad the quality of the graphics isn't any better. I downloaded an emulator for Ocarina of Time, but without the gamepad, it's just not the same.
So back to my 92" 16:9 TV and wishy-washy look.
Commander Keen: The first 3 parts suck and so does Keen Dreams, but Keen 4 is one of my first ever games, and so I love it especially. It's the best of the series, but 5 and 6 are fun, too.
Roboman: My first game ever. I played it when I was very little at my father's work.
It's horrible to play today, but it deserves this mention.

I also played a lot of other games when I was younger.
And most importantly, I bought all of them. I have had one or two pirated games, but I got rid of them quickly.
A lot of my friends called my insane that I did this, but it was the only right thing to do.

BigMacGyver - March 13, 2005 10:26 AM (GMT)
Pogel's post reminded me of something: I forgot to mention my old Nintendo days (nostalgia alert!) :D

I was addicted to almost every Nintendo game i have played. It all started with the Game Boy and Warioland. Then came the SNES and fun games like Super Mario Kart, Super Soccer, Super Mario World, Mario Paint and so on. I can't believe i sold this thing! After that there was N64. I remember i preordered this thing and i was so pissed when they delayed the release again and again ;) . I clearly remember the games that i had played on that console one by one: Zelda Ocarina Of Time, Mario 64, WaveRace, Starfox 64, Rogue Squadron, Body Harvest, Banjo & Kazooie, Jet Force Gemini, Mario Kart 64, PilotWings 64, Donkey Kong 64...

:D I think i have to get this machine out of the basement in the future ;)

Pogel - March 13, 2005 10:46 AM (GMT)
Right, and I forgot about the gameboy games!
Marioland 2-4 (inclused WL 1,2) , Kirby's Dreamland and many more.
On every holdiday I used to play my and my brother's entire collection. (As a geek, you can't just enjoy your holiday away from home...but then again I don't consider traveling holiday, much rather stress, but that's another topic ;) )

You sold your SNES?! I probably spend every time of my youth I was allowed to at that console.
I was never allowed to have a N64, but a few years back I bought one for 10€ or so.

Predatorfan - March 13, 2005 10:46 AM (GMT)
Well, I might be growing out of it a little but I can still play games. I'm partial to the Indiana Jones games, also first person shooters Outlaws, Unreal Tournament, Carmaggedon, also war games are good for me like Medal of Honor. I had the first Max Payne game and that bullettime is the best invention in years.

Dennis - March 13, 2005 10:48 AM (GMT)
Hey guys,

Good topic. A couple of years ago, I used to play videogames a lot. It's the lack of time; I'm composing music all the time and I won't stop till I write an action cue as good as Al Silvestri (something which is of course impossible to do, but hey, I'll keep trying) :D
Anyway, I still like videogames.

Videocard: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 128 MB
Monitor: IIyama, 15 inches
CPU: 1,83 GHz - AMD Athlon XP 2500+
Ram: 1,5 GB
Motherboard: ASUS VIA KT400 (well, something like that)
Soundcard: Creative SB Audigy, Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 Dolby Surround System

Favorite Game Genre: Adventure, First person shooters, Simulations
Favorite Games: Soldier Of Fortune, Soldier Of Fortune 2: Double Helix, Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault, Max Payne 2, GTA Vice City, Doom 3 and some other ones of which I can't remember their names

BUT, I'm sick and tired of that PC of mine; I want to have a PowerMac G5. Macs are much better when you're composing music and stuff like that, but they're so freakin' expensive!!! I guess I'll have to work a bit harder haha.

Dennis

Yeah i can't believe it myself. N64 basically replaced it and i needed money for new games so i had to sell it before it became worthless, but I will never sell my N64! Some time in the future, i can show my kids what i played with every day in my youth ;)

Great topic. I am addicted to some games.

My favorite game ever is SYBERIA. This game is perfect. It has a great story, great characters (I love Kate Walker :P ), great landscapes and a GREAT SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pogel what you said about Grim Fandango is exactly what I feel about Syberia.

Emile, I see that you played Syberia. What do you think about the score? I think is one of the best score ever for a game.

Another game that I really like is Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. I am currently addicted to it. This game has also a great score. There are some really beautiful themes and motifs for every race. Night Elf are the best.

I also played with pleasure: Half Life, Trainz, Call of Duty (good score), Medal of Honor (good score), Age of Empires 1&2, Railroad Tycoon 2&3.

Can the score be ripped easily? Are the music tracks stored in Mp3 in the game folders? Are they in hi-quality?

Also, you mentioned Medal of Honor. You surely already knows it, but the composer is Michael Giacchino, the same of Alias, The Incredibles and some other videogames.

I never played Syberia, but I guess I should. I saw it in a store some months ago. It was sold together with Amerzone, another similar game (from the same team I think?).

I look forward for Syberia 2...

My favourite games are from LucasArts, by the way...I'll add my list later...it's 1.30 AM here and I have to work tomorrow, so probably it's a good idea to sleep a little bit before. :D

Yes the score was good. When you think of it, the life of Kate Walker is very dramatic and that is reflected well in the music.

You HAVE to buy The Longest Journey! It's a classic. If you like Syberia I'm sure you will love The Longest Journey. The character is somewhat similar to Kate Walker

Part 2 is coming too!

And how could I have forgotten to mention the Myst games?!

The score can't be ripped easily because the music tracks aren't stored in Mp3 in the game folders. The team who made the game had that in mind, obviously. Anyway, after I played for the first time the next morning I had the theme from Valedilene in my mind, and for the rest of the day.

So my advise is to get this game Tommy.

Yup, I know about Michael Giacchino. Also he wrote the score for Lost.

Yes, I should get this game. Thanks for the links. Good review. Wow, I'm looking forward to play it.

Right now I'm completely addicted to Guild Wars. What a game!
http://www.guildwars.com

The landscape is beautiful. It's truly an immersive adventure to explore and discover new places in the game. Is anyone here playing it too? We could meat up then and go on a quest or mission. I'm a Ranger and have Elementalist as a second profession. I also have a deadly level 8 pet wolf named Silver :)

BTW, my addiction to this game is the reason why I don't post a lot lately :D

Demetris Christodoulides - June 18, 2005 12:51 PM (GMT)
PLAYSTATION II, the ultimate gaming machine and of course....

GRAND THEFT AUTO : San Andreas

I need nothing else! :smoke:

TommyJohnson - June 19, 2005 10:04 AM (GMT)
Emile, I don't know that game, but judging by your description (and by the pics in the site) I bet that's a really interesting game!!

How's the score in it? Who is the composer?

Pogel - June 19, 2005 02:57 PM (GMT)
Talking about games, I saw some screenshots of Age of Empires 3 (just google for images)
Wooooow!
I think I'm going to have to upgrade my system!

TommyJohnson - June 19, 2005 03:04 PM (GMT)
Well, I searched on eMule and found out that the Guild Wars score is by Jeremy Soule, who did Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. He's a good game composer, so, in short, I'm downloading this Guild Wars thing.

Dimitri - June 19, 2005 06:56 PM (GMT)
I like the music of Age of Empire but prefer Desperatos!! It's like a movie! :D

TommyJohnson - June 19, 2005 07:08 PM (GMT)
You mean Desperados - Wanted dead or alive?

If yes, I agree, the score is really great!! I also like the game itself, it's very similar to Commandos, but in the Far West! ;)

Dimitri - June 19, 2005 07:28 PM (GMT)
Yes! I love action-adventure games like this - also Monkey Island wich has a not sooo good music but I really think a live action Desperado movie would be great..and the big boss is Bruce Willis, the girl is Nicole Kidman and Benicio Del Toro as the Mexican guy ;)

TommyJohnson - June 19, 2005 07:42 PM (GMT)
Ehehe that would be a great game indeed!

But a strongly disagree on that Monkey Island statement. I love the Monkey Island soundtracks (althought they aren't classical scores). ;)

Dimitri - June 19, 2005 07:45 PM (GMT)
Maybe I have wrong memories about it :(

TommyJohnson - June 19, 2005 07:48 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it must be that.

So, go here and download! ;)

Dimitri - June 19, 2005 07:55 PM (GMT)
Interesting Link..thanks Mirko! ;)

TommyJohnson - June 19, 2005 08:00 PM (GMT)
Yeah I talked to it before too (probably in the PC games scores thread).

The site author used to have all the Indiana Jones and Star Wars game scores, but unfortunately he had to take them down due to legal problems (since the site is dedicated to LucasArts games scores and both Indy and SW videogames aren't property of LucasArts anymore).

But there's no legal problem for all the other scores and soundtracks, so kinda download the whole thing and give yourself a LucasArts music culture.

Lee, in case you didn't know I'm sure you would be excited to hear that Dreamfall the successor of The Longest Journey is out and it seems to be fantastic!
http://www.dreamfall.com

Be sure to check out the trailers on the site.

Lee - May 6, 2006 05:40 PM (GMT)
:yahoo: :yahoo: I didn't know, thanks for the link!

The trailers and the screenshots are amazing, and it gets great reviews! :yeah:

Ah and the music (especially music from Arcadia 1), yep I'm pretty excited :D! I can't wait to play it!
