Appearance;;
Hunter Malone is the kind of man whose appearance contradicts his personality -- at least, for the most part. At just over six feet tall, and weighing somewhere in the region of one-hundred and ninety pounds, he's certainly of an imposing stature. He's pretty well-muscled, as would be expected of a soldier, but he isn't any spring-chicken, six-packed guy. He's content with his form, and though he might not be some bodybuilding icon, he does work out to keep himself in shape.

His hair is dark brown, though it can look reddish on occasion, and when he's not on active duty -- which requires short, neatly-cropped hair -- gets to be on the longish side. Hunter almost always has stubble on his chin, though it isn't for lack of shaving. It just happens.
His eyes are an interesting shade of steely blue-grey, but it depends on his mood and the day's weather whether the blue or grey is dominant. Despite a gruff sort of exterior, his eyes are usually sparkling with an inner laughter, a sort of bemusement with the world around him. Whereas many of his comrades have lost that optimistic little twinkle, Hunter has done his best to maintain that sparkle, and he has so far. Whenever he feels that twinkle failing it is thoughts of home that keep him from loosing it entirely.

He doesn't genuinely smile too often, but when he does, it's a perfect, beaming one. This smile only makes an appearance around his closest friends and family, which sometimes leads others to be a little bit intimidated by him. A large, broad man with a scowl on his face isn't exactly the most comforting sight, especially when he's looming over you.

His wardrobe consists of pretty simple fare, usually plaid-print shirts over a solid-colored T-shirt and dark wash jeans, with work boots covering his feet. More often than not, his ensembles when at home are accompanied by a backwards baseball cap -- it's just something he's always done, he doesn't really have an explanation for it. Obviously, when on active duty, he's found in his uniform, and also on occasions when it's called for. His 'dressy' fare consists of dark-colored button-down shirts and slacks, usually accompanied by a leather jacket and black shoes.

Personality;;

If you want to go and talk to Hunter and walk away with tears of laughter still pouring down your cheeks you’ve come to the wrong person. If however, you want to talk, really talk, to somebody who cares enough to let you do just that without interrupting you, who manages to convey a lot more with his serious silence than others do with their noisy proclamations of love and every other emotion under the sun then you’ve come to the right one. Hunter used to be a joker, he used to walk around with a smile on his face that could make everyone else smile too but he lost that along the way. Only with Scarlet can he still be that person, the person who can be that relaxed and carefree without having to worry about the consequences. But then Hunter’s the kind of guy who always worries about the consequences.

The fact that Hunter so rarely smiles and is always so serious makes him appear to be rather gruff and detached, but in truth large crowds of people simply make him feel nervous. Other than when he was on the sports pitch or when he is fighting he hates being surrounded by a huge crowd of people. This shyness is one of his many loveable qualities, once you get to know him. In fact many of Hunter’s less attractive personality traits are the things that people end up liking him for once they see the reason behind them. His serious nature makes him an ideal person to talk something through with because you know that he’ll give you the right advice, not the advice you want to hear. The problem is making the effort, because Hunter so rarely makes the effort himself to appear anything other than how he normally is and so it takes people a while to get to like him.

Hunter likes the basic things in life, as much of a cliché as that is. The one place he feels truly happy, truly relaxed is with Scarlet and his family. He likes to play the alpha male from time to time, the guy who protects his family and loved ones from anything. It’s why he went into the army all those years ago, not solely why but a part of it at least. He wants to help but doesn’t see much way of doing that except through brute force because that’s all he thinks he’s capable of. His urge to help is slightly overwhelming, he doesn’t like to watch people he cares about face things alone and he hates to watch them struggle. Occasionally in his attempts to help he oversteps boundaries or helps people who say they don’t want or need his help. But the reserve, the desire to help, the dedication he shows, all these things make him good leader in the armed forces.

Hunter’s sense of humour is dry at best, in response to Scarlet’s question about whether he was a good soldier, good enough for the current war, he replied, “Honey, I must be doing something good or they wouldn’t want me out here.” However this humour is something he rarely indulges in, he lost the urge to be funny like that a long time ago. But when he does laugh, when he does smile it’s hard to stop other people smiling too. One thing he struggles with more than his sense of humour is his short temper. Sometimes he reacts too fast and to the wrong thing, when he’s fighting that simply isn’t a problem -he’s much to focused on what has to be done- but small things that Frankie says can set him off like nothing else. In his attempts to deal with this he often finds himself walking out of the room rather than yelling but this tactic doesn’t seem to work well either.

History;;

At night we tuck our little babies in bed

Hunter’s parents married young, not ridiculously young but young enough for his father to still be in college when their eldest daughter was born. His mother never went to college, it wasn’t what she aspired to at the time, but she held down some secretarial jobs until her husband graduated. By this point there was a little boy in the nursery back home, Hunter’s older brother Nate. Their third child, another girl, was born when Nate was five and Hunter was born three years later. Hunter was the baby of the family, but he wasn’t the type to be spoilt. Instead Nate went from strength to strength while Hunter followed his big brother in everything he did. Hunter was a good baby, calm and quiet, and a much better toddler than any of his siblings had been. Hunter didn’t go rushing off into things, he never found himself on his rump in front of the table bawling his eyes out having collided with it head first, instead he took things slowly but he got them done right. The same could be said throughout his childhood. Hunter was the sensible kid, the trustworthy one. But he always looked up to his brother no matter how fast Nate lived his life.

was a big baseball player back in high school

The first time Hunter threw a ball it was because it was one of Nate’s favourite things to do. The funny thing was Hunter found that he loved it, and not only that but he was actually better than his brother at it. And that was a first. So it was that Hunter became a jock, he wasn’t the jock that partied or slept with cheerleaders, he was the one who never really believed in himself and who always deferred everything to his big brother. Baseball was the thing he could be good at, but he never really found anything else. Brute force could only be used in so many contexts. His eldest sister got married while he was still in high school and moved away shortly followed by his other sister. All the while his brother was training to be a doctor, he was the bright one and the charming one. But it was Hunter that everyone trusted, Hunter that made them laugh, Hunter that they knew would protect them.

I had a brother at Khe Sanh fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone

Nate joined up before he completed his medical training. It was a spur of the moment thing, he said he couldn’t bear to sit around on his ass while other people his age and younger died. The last time Hunter saw him was watching him board a plane, still smiling and waving at his family. They got the news three months later, Nate had died a few days before his twenty-fifth birthday. Hunter hated it, he hated the sorrow that hung over the house. He didn’t laugh or joke as much any more because it didn’t fit the mood, instead he just focused on not going mad with grief the way his mother had. His mother kept bemoaning the loss of her son in a way that made Hunter feel slightly worthless. It was that that made him join up. He wanted to make her as proud of him as she had been of Nate and this was the only way he could think to do it. He also felt the desire to help others take over, and he knew that by joining the army proper he could protect people. He dropped out of high school and joined up, and for the next sixteen years he only came home for short visits. He didn’t feel anything to keep him home when people needed him elsewhere.

Until I got you in my arms I can't be satisfied

Then one day he had an epiphany. During one of his visits home he went to see his brothers grave and saw that it had a freshly laid wreath on it. He knew that none of his family could have done it so he asked the warden. The warden told him that a lady came down once a week to lay flowers, sometimes she came with her kids and sometimes she came on her own. She stayed for a few minutes and then left. After asking around a little more Hunter found out that this lady had been Nate’s girlfriend when he had left, since married and with children but she still came back to lay flowers for the boy she had loved. It hit him that he didn’t have someone like that, there was no one to lay flowers for him. He wanted someone who would. He wanted someone who would make him come home, make him happy to be home. He never really thought he would find that person but then he, quite literally, walked into her. She tried to yell at him but he just smiled, that in itself should have been a sign. Her name was Scarlet and he knew then and there that he was going to fall in love with her, if he hadn’t already. For the first time in his life he took chances, he took an extended leave and started to date Scarlet. And he was happy. Six months in he asked her to marry him but she rejected him. Told him not yet, plain and simple. He thought he felt his heart break, he was going back to the war, he might never see Scarlet again and she was telling him this? Then she came and found him, told him that she was going to be the person he married, no one else. It was one of the happiest moments of his life. They were married before too long and now he really did have a reason to come home.

But I just hope when I grow up to have my own kids

It wasn’t something he’d wanted. Ever since his brother died Hunter’d felt restless but now he had Scarlet he wanted a whole new set of things. Now that he had something to come home for he was happy, but for him the family portrait wasn’t quite complete. It was one of the reasons that they had adopted Frankie and Abby, that and a desire to help the two children. Hunter’s longing for a family of his own with Scarlet didn’t stop there, as much as he loved his children he wanted a child of his own flesh and Scarlet‘s flesh too, one he could hold for the first time, see it’s eyes open, teach it to walk and talk. Because then he knew that he would find something far past the happiness he already had. That would be something akin to elation. It's what he wants more than anything, because now he's coming home from war and he wants everything to be perfect.
