The waves crashed against the shore, the chilly day even more frigid beside the beach. But Lily Jeffery didn't care; she loved the beach, even when it was frigid outside. She loved the scent of salt and the rumble of the waves; she loved the sand beneath her feet, although at the moment she was wearing shoes. But most of all, she just loved the sea. One could get lost just looking at it, Lily more so than most people. But she didn't worry about that as she stood on the dock, her arms resting on the fence of the dock. Her right hand propped up her chin, keeping her looking straight at the sea. Drifting and dreaming in the crashing of the waves.

From several feet away, Lily would look no different than most teenagers, even if it was odd for someone to be at the beach on a day when one was forced to wear a sweatshirt. She was wearing a light pink zip-up sweater with a white camisole beneath it and a pair of brown corduroy's. On her feet she wore a beige pair of Converse, the pink lines on the edge of the sole accentuating her sweater. Her hair was tied back in a bun and a brown headband was at the forefront of her hair. But it was nothing outrageous and one would never think her different.

Until one stepped closer to her, at least, and saw that the look in her eye was not one getting lost in the average thoughts of a teenager, such as who one would date or school assignments one needed to get done, but her thoughts were thousands of miles away, such as they were most of the time. It wasn't a vacant expression in her gray eyes, exactly, but it was a dreamy expression.

What was she dreaming exactly? With Lily it could be anything and everything. She didn't have a set of daydreams that she wandered through like some people; wherever her mind went, that's what path she followed, at least most of the time. At the moment, however, she was dreaming of one of the few things that she did dream about with her own path of wandering in mind; she was dreaming about love, the type of love that she wasn't sure truly existed but the thing that she wanted most in the world. Someone to love her for who she was and wouldn't try to change her; she had dated people in the past who had liked her for the pretty package, but her dreaming mind was too different for them and they had tried to change her. That she hated most above all.

But there were other aspects that Lily wanted for someone to fall in love with, although she had never voiced them, thinking that everyone would think her for being so foolish for believing in something like love while living in this dark time. But she had strict inner morals and one of them was that she would never marry without love. Like her brother was being forced to do; something which she hated her parents for making him do. She may pretend some of the time that she disliked her brother, but deep down Lily truly loved him and she was completely against forcing him into this marriage. Why isn't he trying to get out of it? It's clear that he loves Tohna! she thought irritatedly, the emotion showing through her eyes. But as soon as the thought drifted into her mind, she pushed it out. She had come to the beach to relax and so she looked out at the waves, ignoring the thoughts in her mind until they were forced out with ones of far off places and happiness, returning the dreamy expression to her face.

An expression which remained in Lily's hazel eyes until someone broke her from her reverie and she looked over her shoulder, a bit startled but smiled upon seeing whom it was.

((Wow... Sorry for the suckiness.))

As Kevin walked across the silent road he smiled as he came to the beach, the cold bursts of air almost tearing through him yet he had always found listening to the waves a tranquil experiance. It was almost as if he was 1000 miles away, where his problems and the trivialities of everyday life seemed as far off and unknown as they had been when he was younger and his only problem had been grasping the subject of Maths. He remembered sitting at those desks as he stared at the board, adjusting his seat every few minutes. Trying to distract himself from his bad grades and as he looked forward and the problems began life got harder but he was thankful. It had spurred him on so he would be more attentive, and make his way through life with a good education. It had taken many hours of revision but eventually he managed to pass his exams, which in his eyes was a miracle as he still barely remembered the facts he had learned. As his eyes drifted along the beach he saw a body ahead, wearing a pink top and brown bottoms. Deciding no harm could come from moving a head, he walked briskly towards the brunette. As he got closer he realised who she was, Lillian Jeffery or Lily as most knew her. A friend of Coralee's, a dreamer. Constantly looking off into the stars, he had never known her to hold a decent conversation for longer than five minutes but then again, he hadn't spoken to her for more than five minutes. He thought she was a friend of his, by default and this brought on an inner laugh as he watched her spot him from across her shoulder.

Kevin stood with his hands in the pockets of his jeans, they were navy but washed out as was the style and some tears around the heels where he had been walking on them due to being longer than he had needed. That had been the last time he let Christian shop for him, he wore a plain green T-Shirt that was barely visible except for it's neck due to being under a striped jumper of two colours, a light and a dark green that crossed it horizontally. Something they had in common, as she wore beige converse he too wore a pair. His were of plain black with the official All*Star logo on the inner side as well as on the thick white bottom at the back, facing the heel. The converse had a red tongue and retained their natural, white laces opposed to those alternatives with the names of rock bands or daft slogans etched across them. Paying extra for what? To do the same as the originals do, Kevin was a great believer in saving the money earned for what was important. Like trivial questions of where the money for the shopping was coming from. Money was tight at the minute and he worried he would have to find a second job to support them, he wasn't sure why but the stunts had lost the appeal they once had. Maybe war had shown him gambling his life wasn't worth it? Or maybe he just needed to let himself get back into the swings of things, he felt as though he had to resume responsibilities such as making sure they had enough which was foolish as he wasn't the oldest and it wasn't meant to be his job.

He suddenly remembered why he could remember Lily so clearly, she had been the friend of Coralee's who would be a gay rights activist in a few years. Her strong will and opinionated personality had earned her a title in the Oaks home he wouldn't repeat in fear of insulting her, his father didn't take kindly to anyone who thought he was wrong and Lily was no better than the rest. Also, Kevin knew he feared Coralee turning against him and she was on the verge of it. Babying her hadn't helped her develop, sheltering her only prevented her from expanding her emotional range. If they weren't careful she would end up the emotional range of a teaspoon, she idolised Kevin and that was what worried them. As the brunette gave him a small smile, he walked closer as he now stood beside her while the cold air virtually froze him but he fought through it, forcing a smile as the dimples appeared in his cheeks. "Hello Lily," he muttered as he tried not to sound as cold as he felt.

((I'm getting sick of the font, so now I'm just not going to use it. ))

Lily looked at Kevin for a moment after he spoke, trying to read him, hoping to know what had caused him to come out to the beach on a day like this. Everyone knew what she was doing there, dreaming as always, but most people wouldn't come to the beach today. Why Kevin was around piqued Lily's interest. After a moment of staring at him, Lily turned her face back towards the water and thought about what she had just seen by reading Kevin's... Aura. Something wasn't right, but then again, in these times, more often than not something wasn't right with someone somewhere, most often in St. Peters where it was not supposed to.

Lily was curious what was wrong with him and ideas swiftly flew into her mind. The first idea was the simple one, that there was a war going on in the world and Kevin was a soldier of the country. War took it's toll on everyone, whether they were a soldier or not, but Lily knew that soldiers faced the toll only less than one other type of person; the one who had lost someone to the dreadful war. Recalling images of the town graveyard, watching a funeral of some people she hardly knew occur, Lily wondered if he found out that someone he knew abroad, fighting, had been killed. But the sensible part of Lily, however large that part was, realized that he would either be comforting or being consoled if that was the case. No, Lily's reason told her that it was something closer to home and not the war that was bothering Master Kevin Oaks.

Another idea swiftly planted itself in Lily's mind, perhaps Kevin was having trouble with his job. Lily didn't drive much herself, she was still a New Yorker at heart and subways were her prefer way of getting around, but perhaps something had happened to his car. She hoped he hadn't gotten into an accident or anything; an image of a burning car swiftly flashed before Lily's hazel eyes but she blinked and glanced over at Kevin swiftly to know that that idea wasn't the truth either. So what was the problem with Kevin? Lily, luckily, had enough tact not to ask straight out, but she was curious. People still couldn't be troubling him about his sexuality, could they? He had just come back from war! As did most of the people bothering him! Didn't they have better things to do?

"Lovely day, huh, Kevin?" Lily asked in a dreamy tone, looking out at the waves once more. Perhaps the best thing to do, to help the man whom Lily considered a friendly acquaintance at the very least, would be to help him think that his problem wasn't as obvious to others as it was to Lily. For, truth be told, Lily, thanks to her personality, was a bit more perceptive to the problems of people whom she was friendly with than most people were.

Lily was such a spacer, she always had been. Rather dreamy. Her expression was a constant, it was almost as if she saw things on a deeper level than anyone else. Scanning the messy beach that floundered ahead of him, he cracked his knuckles while staring almost blankly towards the sea. It wouldn't be long before he was forced across sea again and could he possibly return? This was a war, death was imminent would he become one the so called martyrs? A hero? But even if he was killed out there, what made him a hero? All he was doing was fighting the enemy, America had failed them once more and he wasn't ready to listen to any more of it's idle promises. To fix this, to end the war. Life was hard enough and he knew even if he returned he wouldn't be the same. Some of his friends would be dead, some of those he cared for more than anything and he didn't want that. The war was useless, it wasn't proving anything and he wanted results as much as they next man but there had to be a better way. War and violence where never the answer. Forcing women to wed and teenage girls to become pregnant while pulling the men from their lives wasn't the answer either but the government had yet to realise this could all be worked out over their tables without bringing in civilian casualties such as Jacob Bones and Finn Tucker. Two men known throughout the community, dead because of a war they had no part in starting.

"Yes it's an, interesting day," he replied to sudden warmth and then harsh winds following, it was rather temperamental, "How are you Lily? Oh, and Coralee?" This was his chance to find out how young Coralee had been doing, without her knowing he had asked about her.
