- Attractive Spirals Tutorial
This tutorial is going to show you the basics of creating very cool looking patterns which have very little limiations. These patterns can be so different to everyone elses. And I am here to teach you a cool technique.
Open photoshop cs up and use these following settings for your new document. Either go to File >> New or click CTRL + N.
Name: Spiral Pattern
Preset: Custom
Width: 500
Height: 500
Resolution: 72 Pixels / Inch
Color Mode: RBG Color 8 bit
Background Contents: White
Double click the layer to unlock and rename to 'Spiral Pattern'. Press 'D' to reset your colors. Now invert the layer so it turns black, press
CTRL + I or go to Image >> Adjustments >> Invert.
Now instead of the pattern I want you to do, I am simply going to show you an image. You can use this template to follow the tutorial or you can alternatively create your own pattern and then proceed on with the tutorial with your new template to see what you come up with. Click
here. Its all done with the pencil tool with 1 pixel, except the middle line which is 2 pixels. Do not just save and use this as you need the template and the background on a seperate layer each. You can save it but you will have to use your magic wand and delete the black from the white line template. Ok, now if you got that done, great. Click on the background (black background layer) and do the plastic wrap effect shown in one of my previous tutorials. Do to
Filter >> Artistic >> Plastic Wrap with these following settings:
Highlight Strength: 20
Detail: 15
Smoothness: 15
Now add a lens flare, go to
Filter >> Render >> Lens Flare. Use these settings, note this effect should be applied to the black background layer. Use the plastic wrap blob to center our flare.
Brightness: 100%
Lens Type: 105mm Prime
Now click the actions tab, located next to the history tab. Click the 'Create new action' button which is the same as the create a new layer button. (A piece of paper with a folder edge) Put the name as 'Twirl' and set the function key as you wish. Now remember this fuction key. Click ok to proceed. (Note: we are in active recording mode now) Now duplicate the template layer, then go to
Edit >> Transform >> Rotate. Set the rotate attribute to -30. The rotate attribute is the third in from the right. Now click our 'Move Tool' and click Apply.
Now click 'Stop' in our actions tab and remember our fuction key? Press that 12 times, dont rush. Wait for each one to be completed and then do the next one. So we should have our main template layer and the copy we did for the action. And 12 more from the action key we just pressed. So 14 in total excluding our black background layer.
You should now merge all our template layers together into one. Which is simple. Make the black background invisible by clicking the eye and create a new layer above all the rest and go to
CTRL + ALT + Shift + E. You can alternatively link all the template layers together and merge all linked.
Now with our merged layer or template lines. Go to
Filter >> Distort >> Twirl and set to 94 degrees.
Create a new layer above the rest and set the blend mode of the layer to 'Color'. Go back to our frame and click one of the segments on the spiral with the magic wand. click on our color layer and then select a color and fill it in with the fill bucket tool. Keep doing this until all segments are filled in (on the spiral and not the outside). Once thats done get rid of our frame by taking it out of view using the eye on the left.
You can use the colors I used if you wish, the red hex code is #CF0000 and the blue hex code is #5212FF.
You can maybe make a few of these and make it into a .gif so it looks like the spiral is moving at high speed. Also try out various blend modes etc to see if your 3D glasses work ;)
