Title: The Death Lord

N.I.B. - May 6, 2007 10:41 PM (GMT)
I continue to have great success with this build, I think I'm something like 19 wins and 2 draws with it (you mave have read about it on other threads here):

Necrarch Vampire Lord, lvl 3 (4) (using Lore of Death)
Master of the Black Arts
Nehekara's Noble Blood
Unholy Cynosure
Forbidden Lore

Necromancer lvl 2
Rod of Flaming Death

Necromancer lvl 2
Book of Arkhan
Dispel Scroll

5 Ghouls
5 Ghouls
5 Dire Wolves
5 Dire Wolves

25 Zombies with command group
25 Zombies with standard
24 Skellies with full command and light armour
15 Zombies

10 Black Knights with barding and full command
Banner of the Barrows

2 Spirit Hosts
5 Fell Bats

1 Banshee

Casting Pool: 10
Dispel Pool: 6
Models in Army: 131

Total Army Cost: 2250

I dust it off from time to time when I long from a change from all necromancy. The Death spells I'm always shooting for are #2 and #6, so I can use them with my extra range. Drain Life is just evil.

Usually I'm happy to march up and just hold the center, knights and Hosts are held back to counter attack on the flanks. Wolves divert and Ghouls usually guard the area behind my lines together with Fell Bats.
My general tries to find a good central spot in which to hide, and then I unleash Hell. Rod of Flaming Death goes to work to draw out scrolls, and I can usually draw out more scrolls with Vanhels and Invocations from the necro's.

Against elite armies the game is often mine after one or two unchecked Drain Life. It's just crazy to see how easy those knights drop off their saddles, especially the Bretonnia or Empire kind.

Had a game against Slaanesh mortals a couple of weeks ago - he conceded after 3 turns. Tonight I faced Brets - he conceded after 5 turns. So another two massacres to the Death Lord :)

The charactrers sound something like I have been wanting to try out a while. Only I would give the Necrarch spell familiar instead of the cynosure, just to make sure I get the important spells from lore of death. I would like to know how you usually cast the spells. I mean, do you cast invocation with both necromancers with 3 dice every turn and the vampire uses the 4 to do his thing? Because I thought that by giving the necromancers power familiar, periapt and scroll, I would get 12 dice. This would mean I could summon twice with 3 dice and still have 6 for the vampire. In the first turn or two I could use them to cast wind of death and steal soul, both likely in range with the master of the black arts-power. Then, when the vampire is near the enemy lines in his unit, I could use 4 dice to cast the spell number 6 and the two dice left could be used to cast steal soul in close combat, with one dice borrowed from either of the necromancers.

The problem with this setup is that there is no bound spells. But two death spells a turn cast by a Necrarch Lord could be devastating :) . Do you think this is a decent idea?

You can't borrow dice from necromancers in 7th ed.

I meant that I usually give the two basic magic dice to my necromancers. The Lord would be using one of these basic dice, that usually "belong" to my necromancers.

I've thought about this, but you'll roll more snake eyes than you'll miss Drain Life when you have five spells.

Sometimes, if I really want to be sure of getting it off. And sometimes I cast 2 spells with 3 dice each with the Necrarch, depending on if I'm in range with Drain or not.

Sure it can work. Personally I like the more reliable approach with the two bound spells and Cynosure. The Book of Arkhan is just too good to leave at home.

The famous death lord. Since you first thought up the idea I´ve had great sucess as well with it... similiar list though not identical. I also have had numerous of debates with players concerning the master of dark arts and certain death lore spells. Thankfully when they saw the wording they agreed that they did infact work with drain life and so on.

Some have called me a rule-nazi for it though. Have you encounter similiar reactions?

Still, love the list.

The range vs radius issue isn't officially clarified for 7th ed, so my standing advice to any player who wants to take this trick to a tournament is - talk to the tournament organizer first. If it's ok with him, it's ok.

My local organizer (Fantasia Fanatic) thought it was obvious that extra range = extra radius for Drain Life, and I haven't encountered any opponent neither in friendly games nor tournaments, that has questioned it.

Hi N.I.B.

I'm really intrigued by your list. And I'll definitely try-out something simular.
I see you have encoutered Brettonians with this list. So I have a qouple of questions.
1) Was it a Bret flying circus?
1) How did you deploy?
2) What tactic did you utilize?

In other words in this list strong enough versus Brettonians?

Yours
