Title: Boycott Beijing 2008
Description: as it the subject came

I am not just a nerd, but I can also be serious.
So, as an intelectual of sort, I throw my support on the groups who will boycot this farsical, cynical and hypocritical mess.
Mainland China is a dictature mixing an hard political communist with some unsavory parts of capitalism, who represss religious and ethnical/cultural minorities, as seen in Xijiang (spelling?) and Tibet., and enforce many violations of human rights in general, as well as a terrible pollutor. And let's not forget the hard line against taiwan.
Boycott Beijing 2008!

We had to write an essay on this in Area Studies: Asia.
It was really interesting.
I think we should boycott the Olympics because of the following reasons
1) They(China) are uprooting people's homes in Bejing just for the event.
2) They have not upheld their end of the human rights deal.
3) The pollution... UGH.
and finally, 4) They will censor all info about the bad things about China[I.E.: Tianamen(sp?), Tibet, etc.]

I'm definitely all for boycotting it because of the pollution. I was in Beijing a little over a year ago. It was horrible. You can literally see the air pollution. It's disgusting.

Full supporter as well Ubber. We as the rest of the world need to keep it raised up, especially to the International Olympic Committee, that China continued repression of minorities, especially Tibet, means they are the Hypocritical Games.

I guess I'm the only one who supports the olympics being in Beijing this year.

Why?

I saw some footage of protesters trying to put the flame out, one almost succeeded

Well I just find it very unfair. I mean, I don't remember the year, but the only reason that South Korea decided to host the olympics in the mid-late 1900s was because they wanted to prove they weren't, ......I don't remember the term either. It was a type of goverment that started with an A. I had a topic and all the hard info on another site, but the topic was deleted.
Anyways.
Russia got to hold the olympics. Nazi Germany got to too. Why are we taking it away from China?
Even if they are taking people out of their homes, I doubt that they're going to keep the bulidings that they've built. So they'd rebuild NEW places for people to live.
I guess the cons outweight the pros a lot, but I just feel that if we boycott Beijing, what will the prove?
I just feel that we're being unfair to China right now, they reason they're going to all this trouble is to try to impress the world. Rome wasn't bulit in a day. Nor will be a perfect China.

Its the fact that they're forcing people out of their homes for it though, thats why theres an attempted boycott

Meh. I guess it's all because people are more open-minded about things.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing, I'm just saying there's a fine line between being open-minded and stupid.

I think that's just stupid. The flame represents the olympics, not China. They're basically trying to put out the sign of the Olympics, not China's holding of the olympics.

I agree, I was there last November... Oh man, never in my life had I spent a whole day walking around mist!!!! So disgusting, I didnīt even want to breathe!!! I had to wear a mask...
But yeah, I kind of agree with Hachi. Why should it be boycotted? Yes, China has political problems, and yes there are like a "googuillion" terrorist groups, bla bla bla.... Change has to start somewhere, doesnīt it?
I disagree, however, with the whole "taking down houses" part. ALTHOUGH they are actually doing all of this to prepare Beijing for all the tourists that are going to go this year.
Do you people realize that public toilets in China donīt have doors? Or at least they didnīt; theyīve started to put doors because, OBVIOUSLY, foreigners arenīt going to be able to take in so much culture at once!!
There are pros and cons people, but letīs try to focus on the pros instead, shall we? Cons just bring out the worst in people who can have good things.

People do dumb thing's when they're angry, besides its kinda funny to watch the cops dive on them
