Yes Mario's slightly stronger but, luigi's taller, faster, can jump higher AND;
He has better control over his fireballs.

I think Mario's cuter, and I've only played Mariokart before and I play with Luigi rather than Mario. HOwever Yoshi is the coolest! So I voted for Luigi, partially because he is fitter. >_>
