Have you seriously ever broken a string? I've only known one person who's ever broken a string. And he was playing around on it, so it was obvious it was going to happen.
Well with the violin or any other orchestra instrument the strings get loose and then they can pop out. Thats when you change them. My E string came out once, but its easily fixed.
