Title: Off Tomorrow...Again.
Description: I hate work shortages.

Okay, how many on here also have a job? I'm starting to already feel the effects of this recession. Have been for awhile actually, in that I've been working for a few days, then sent home for a few days, on then off again, and it's driving me nuts. Anybody else been having this problem?

I have a job. :]
I work at a market.
But they've never done that.
Probably cuz I barely have like 6 months.
but I have a similar problem
I sometimes request to work on Mondays, Tuesdays,
or Wednesdays, but my boss ends up giving me
the weekend.
Darn it. She told me its because their short on hours,
so they dont really need that many people.
Maybe thats what they're doing at your job.
They might be short on hours, or not they don't
have that much business now in days.
That's what my mom is getting too.
Thats why I'm seeing her alot at home.
haha :]

It has more to do with business slowdowns more than anything. As my employer is primarily there to help disabled and mentally challenged people the most, they're who are first inline for jobs there. The more disabled, the higher their priority. I'm kinda light in both regards, but still disabled enough to be getting Social Security Disability checks each month.
I can take care of myself much, much more than many of the others where I work at, but I still have some problems, mostly in my hands being physically weaker than most people's. I also have some fused bones in my neck that limit the amount I can turn my head, so that affects what I'm capable of, and add to that all the heart valve problems I've been having for awhile in addition to having battled and overcome Hodgekins Disease.
I'm starting to wonder where I could maybe get advanced Linux operating system training so I could maybe go for getting a computer networking certification. It'd be great if I could take some community college classes on it through the venture my employer has with the local one.

My brother has had that problem. When he used to work at Target like a few weeks ago, he would get a certain number of hours for one week, and then the next week, he'd get like 1 hour less or something. And it would always be off and on again. It was crazy.

Just for kicks, I decided to post a picture of the front door of the plant I work at:
Industrial Opportunities, Inc.
I think this is the third building that IOI has been in in its 34 years in business. Built in 1951, the building used to be a plant where jeans were made, but it was closed down when the owner, VF Jeanswear, moved the operations that were in it to Mexico I think. IOI bought it 2002, moved in in 2003, with me joining the workforce in 2004. Originally having 50,000 sq. feet of floorspace, we've added another 15,000 sq. feet to house educational facilities for the disabled clients, as well as to enlarge the cafeteria.
Part of the floorspace was recently walled up and converted into a sterile, hospital-like cleanroom environment to house the new medical products division, which is where I was working last week and the beginning of this week. That is, until I got word today we didn't get a shipment of surgical bags to work on like I was hoping, meaning I and my co-worker ran out of work today.
My co-worker on what we were doing is more disabled than I am, so he gets dibs first on other things in the plant. There's nothing for me to do tomorrow, and I've got a CT scan on Thursday combined with band volunteering, so Friday, when I get paid again is the next opportunity for me to work.

I've worked one day in two weeks,I'm sooo bored.
Patriot1776 - April 10, 2008 11:12 AM (GMT)
I am going to work a half-day today. I found out yesterday my CT scan isn't until NEXT week. That frees me up to work this morning before band practice in the afternoon. I'm not sure about being able to work tomorrow. I may wind up just driving up there tomorrow to just get my paycheck. I HOPE I'll be able to work tomorrow too however.

I think the cleaning company I am working for is feeling the effects of the recession. I operate a floor cleaning machine that sweeps and scrubs the floor at the same time. This machine is a ride-on and has a 62 inch sweep path, 48 inch scrub path, holds 75 gallons of cleaning solution. The brooms, scrub brushes, traction system, etc are hydraulic powered. This hydraulic system is powered by a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder GM industrial propane engine. The only other engine driven component is the alternator. Anyway, back to the topic. The machine needs some repairs done. It needs new brooms, scrub brushes, dust control filter, and some other things, and we just don't have the money at this point since we are on a budget,

I did get a paycheck yesterday from work, but it wasn't even worth putting in the bank. It was for only $17.98. I straight cashed it instead.

What do you do there? If it sounds good enough, I might try and find me a place like it too and go for it.

Unfortunately, Dunkin Donuts doesn't pay that well. It's an average paycheck of less than 200 bucks, I think. My friend works there.
Patriot1776 - May 11, 2008 10:51 PM (GMT)
And Tim Horton's doesn't have a franchise here anyway. I'm not completely turned off by working in a restaurant, I just won't work in a place like a fast foot joint ever again. It has to be a different place, more prestigious place, like a steakhouse or something similar (Red Lobster, Applebee's, etc.). The best restaurant locally I wouldn't mind working as a waiter at, if the hours weren't insane, would be Rib Country. VERY local chain of places that are a mountaineer-themed place and have a lot of Appalachian decor in them. Bluegrass music is the music featured within.
If things don't start picking up at Industrial Opportunities, Inc. soon, I may seriously start looking for a place that's more steady. I'm hoping when I call in tomorrow they tell me to come in.
Rin_Sama - May 12, 2008 03:38 AM (GMT)
I'd figure that Best Buy would pay at least $12/hr. When I was working at Future Shop that was my starting wage. Of course, the cost of living in Calgary is the highest in the country. That is why I moved home
Patriot1776 - May 12, 2008 10:55 AM (GMT)
No Best Buy here either. In fact, there's NOTHING really big here except for Wal-Mart and Ingles. Not going in at Wal-Mart, and Ingles I'm not sure about either.
