Title: Forever Winter

I think I was sitting in science when I thought of this idea. Either that or it was the bus... This’ll either be a short story or a one shot.

The way I’ve been writing this story is quite different than how I normally write. And I like it. A lot.

Title: Forever Winter
Fandom: None
Rating: T
Warning: Pure fiction?
Summary: A species thought to be extinct comes back in the worst way, powerful and hungry for revenge. Exactly how are you supposed to suppress them?

It was winter. But it always was in Tokyo. Ever since the long ago freeze-over, the world was thrown into an eternal winter. It had started with ‘Global Warming’ as the concern, until it grew to ‘Global Cooling’ and then into the Forever Winter.

It took a little over 10 years for all the humans to die out completely. Whether it was from the cold temperature that the earth took shortly after the sun had been blocked out, or if it was the fact that plants had such a hard time growing, nobody really cared much. As long as there were animals that could survive, so could they.

Cameron took a long drag from her cigarette. She didn’t know the real reason why she even lit the damned thing. After all, it’s not like she would taste any of it; much less breathe after this. It had just been so long since she’d been able to do this.

50 years she had been stuck in school. 50 years of not being able to sit with a cigarette and watch the snow drift by. No, it wasn’t that she was idiotic or anything, that was simply how long she had to be there. In her culture, old traditions did not die, and that’s why her school - nearing its 2000th year of existence - was still open.

Invincibility and eternal life in this world gave you something that you would not have otherwise; a chance to think. And Cameron thought. The lack of ‘life’ on the earth caused a lack of work. In reality, there was plenty that she needed to do. Find animals, find a mate, find a way of ‘life’.

She shook the heavy snow out of her strawberry blonde hair, one of the few tributes that made her at all separated from the rest of the brunette world. She threw her cigarette off the top of the 30 story building, jumping off herself, racing it to the ground.

She won; her landing soft and elegant like it should be. Her Physical Education class of 5 years would have been a waste had she not. Wasting time was something that Cameron hated to do. But being lost in thought was something that was far from wasting time to her.

Running home from the outskirts of former Tokyo, to the heart of downtown was easy. It was harder when the snow was coming down at a rate of an inch per hour, but to her it was still easy. Her home was with her family, consisting of her mother, father, and 5 siblings.

Her mother had been extremely paranoid as of late. Cameron’s brother Lucas had gone off few days ago. This normally was no big deal, except that he had not come back, nor was there any word of where he could have gone.

But Lucas was a very trusted boy, having just come out of the academy like Cameron, he knew every rule by heart. Her family wasn’t in complete distress, just in a state of confusion as to where the oldest son would have run off to.

After all, her family was the calmest family in Tokyo. Perhaps it was because her parents had lived long ago, during the time of the sun. And now, nothing surprised them. But that wasn’t anything to brag about, only 5 separate families lived in Tokyo. Bragging was more or less a sort of gossip.

In this world, ‘cities’ were small. The most harsh rule to families though, was that mates and marked could not be form the same region. This could be one of the reasons that Lucas had left. But Cameron and Lucas had been closer than any of their siblings, and she would have known about his departure.

The time of the endless night was only told by the ancient clock on the main room wall. This was how her family knew when she was late.

On this particular night, she was 10 minutes late, but in her world, this was much later than what was acceptable. “Cameron Morgan Taylor.” Her parents were originally English, thus her quite English name and why she spoke English at home. Even though it was clearly against the rules. “Please do tell me where you have been. And why you smell of cigarettes. I do wish you’d listen to my household rules.” Ameilia Taylor was a very old fashioned mother with sentence formation and diction to prove it.

“Smoking does nothing to me, I don’t understand why you care.” Cameron did not care about what her mother wanted, much less did she understand her reasoning.

Ameilia sighed, her daughter before never acted in such a way. But ever since she had come back from the academy, she had been quite disobedient.

The door of the Taylor household swung open – not quickly to the family – to show a calm, yet panicked face. Ameilia welcomed the guest without even looking to see who it was. “Hello Matthew.”

“Ameilia,” The boy with the mentality of the 45 year old paused, “We found Lucas.”

The path to the place where Lucas was found was a confusing road. Twists and turns at nearly every tree, to the point that Cameron was sure they were going in circles. And then a scent caught her nose.

It was bitter and foul at the same time. A scent she had never smelled before. And mixed into the scent, was the sweet smell of death that had always showered Lucas. Ameilia sniffed the air, pausing in the middle of the forest. The look on her face was one that Cameron was not familiar with. It was full of confusion and an attempt to remember something; but that was absurd because Ameilia remembered everything.

The scent was overpowering within a few seconds, having moved at least 25 miles closer to the source. A small pile of ash lay dark on the snow covered ground. It had stopped snowing long ago, and the ash looked out of place.

“When we found him, he was nearly gone. There was nothing we could do.” It took Cameron a second to understand what he meant. Lucas was... dead.

Dead was a word that was only used to describe humans and animals. Not Lucas or anybody in their family. “Lucas was cut apart. But it wasn’t any average cut, by clean rips. They were jagged. Almost, torn.”

“But no animals know of fire.” Danielle was Cameron’s youngest sister. She was innocent and young, still not having attended any of the academy. Speaking in such a direct way about such a serious subject was looked down upon by the educated type.

“Yes Danielle. We understand that. And that is why we are trying to find the answer to this unsolvable question.” It annoyed Cameron the way that her mother spoke to Danielle. Danielle was a simple 15 seconds younger than Cameron, yet they were still the same. And Ameilia failed to realize that they were.

Then the ‘adults’ talked in quiet voices. Voices that could not be heard by Danielle, somebody who had never been trained to listen for the unhearable. But Cameron understood every word that was mouthed out of their mouths.

“What do you conclude is the creature that killed your son?” Matthew’s voice was full of concern, as though he had no idea, and Ameilia had all of them.

“I know the scent that is entwined with Lucas’.” She paused like he had back at her home. “It’s a very distinguishable scent.” Again she paused.

Ameilia liked suspense, and she loved to build it. But this was suspense that was not the type she liked. She preferred when it did not directly involve her. She liked it when it would not possibly change the course of the world. She liked it when it did not involve other creatures. “It’s the scent of a wolf.”

That was an amazing chapter... It's unique, and interesting. I would love to read more of it. ^_^ The detail was exquisite; I could picture almost everything. (But, then again, I have a more active imagination than most of my friends, picturing odd and strange things that I have no clue where the hell they come from. o_0)

Why a wolf, I wonder. Do you just like the animal, or...do you have something else in mind that involves the wolf? ^^;; I don't mean to pry, I'm just curious....

Ashita Genki Ni Naare - May 17, 2008 01:22 AM (GMT)
You'll see soon. In the next chapter.

Kamilah_femaledogdemon - May 17, 2008 01:33 AM (GMT)
I can't (but can, and will) wait! It seems very interesting as to how you've organized things to be. The events all leading up to this... It's just perfect! (To me anyway. lol)

Patriot1776 - May 17, 2008 02:53 AM (GMT)
Hmm...the people in this story are vampires correct?

Ashita Genki Ni Naare - May 17, 2008 02:54 AM (GMT)
Of course. I don't write about anything else. :3

Jostanos - May 20, 2008 07:13 AM (GMT)
:victory: :kittylove: :excited: Excellent Story, Ari. ^^

Please continue when you may. ^^

I'm sorry it's taking a while. I got through about half of the 2nd chapter and then I decided that I didn't like the path it was creating and scrapped it. In the meanwhile...

I changed some names in this story for a variety of reasons. I changed Ameilia because I looked back on Vampires Are Completely Terrifying and I realized that they’re really different people. Ameilia is really a loving person deep down, while Emily (new character/name) is generally cold towards everybody.

Danielle’s name changed because I changed Dylan’s name to Daniel. But I think the biggest reason for those 3 name changes is because no matter if you have immortality, you’re never going to live for 2000 years. Especially if you live in the world of vampires.

So just information for everybody.

I put this in big and everything, but this chapter 1.5 NOT chapter 2. That comes later.

Title: Forever Winter
Chapter: 1.5

Matthew’s face was twisted in a sort of way that only confused Cameron more. Such a flat out answer did not call for that amount of confusion. He opened in mouth in an attempt to talk, but instead closed it again to rethink his reply. It ended up being quite a simple one, “Wolves don’t exist.”

“Please, dear Matthew, tell me what this scent is if it is not a wolf’s.” Emily made an easy request. “I assure you that you will not think of a logical answer.”

Matthew could not think of a valid answer. “Wolves don’t exist. They haven’t since 2578.” All he could do was repeat his previous answer. But for a man like him, it was logical. While people might have had their disagreements, in this world, you could never accept the fact that you might have been wrong. It was simply against the rules to be wrong.

Emily was very much caught up in her personal views before she remembered the rule. Having been nearly five hundred fifty years old when she entered The Academy made her views much different than others. She was more free minded, and expressed her opinion. But what she had seen as an adolescent made her millions of times smarter than anybody else.

She sighed, “Well, then please do decide what is the scent on your own, I do not have time to sit here and wait for your ideas to take form. I have family to inform.” As soon as the last word had left her lips, she was gone.

Cameron could simply stare at where her mother had been. Emily rarely left in such a quick way, much less such a rude way. Following the deathly floral scent, Cameron caught up to her mother quite easily.

“Excuse me Mother, but what the hell was that?” Cameron and her mother may have been rude to each other at home, but they were family. It was much different when it was towards a non-family member.

Matthew was definitely not a family member. Even with the amount of power Emily had in the clan, such behaviour was unacceptable. “I simply requested that which he could not fulfill.”

The way she said it made Cameron’s non-flowing blood boil. It sounded like something a five year old would have said. “That has to be the most immature thing you’ve ever said since the day I met you.”

“Because you’re so much more mature than me. Learn some respect Cameron.” Emily’s words were sharp and hateful as they left her lips. They were cruel in the way that Cameron could not stand; from her mother.

“You were the one who was being disrespectful back there Mother. Don’t you dare tell me to learn respect when you can’t even comprehend what the word means.” Cameron spat it back, obviously aware of the hypocrisy behind it. She was focusing on mirroring the lack of emotion her mother had rather than watch what she was actually saying.

It was mere milliseconds before she felt her back crushing through layers upon layers of cardboard. But it wasn’t cardboard that she was falling through, they were Cedar trees. Cameron focused for a moment; her mother was at least a mile away. She’d been thrown through at least thirty Cedar trees. But it still wasn’t anything new to Cameron, Emily did this quite often. It was a simple way of disciplining her children.

“You can only deny so much.” In a single instant, Emily was once again in front of Cameron. Her glare at least a million times intenser than before.

“Learn to shut your mouth you ungrateful insect.” The words coming from Emily’s mouth were doused in bitter disgust. While most her words towards Cameron were harsh, never had she ever said things in such a cruel way.

Home was now not an option for Cameron; unless she chose to be verbally and possibly physically abused. Instead all she could think to do was to go back where, if luck was on her side, to where Alexandra and Matthew were. At a speed faster than lightening, she flew back to the memorable clearing that was a tad too small to be a clearing.

The scent in the area was amazingly strong. Much more than Cameron had realized before. And regardless of the countless tests on scents Cameron had taken, she simply couldn’t believe the strength of it. It was a sour and bitter smell that combined in an attempt to cause her stomach to revolt. Had it not been for Lucas’ sweet and masculine scent, Cameron might have found a way to vomit.

Leaning softly against a strong tree, she stared at the black snow that was the remains of – no matter what her mother said – her brother. “Oh Lucas.” Cameron made a mental note to herself to punish herself for the much human action of talking to the dead; and more importantly, to herself, “I wish you hadn’t left this earth.”

That was when her fingers felt the dent in the wood. Her fingers traced the mark as she tried to identify it. It had a large, almost arch shape with three smaller and rounder shapes to the side. The shape did not belong to a creature native to the Far East lands.

Cameron had the habit of losing track of time. It was dark in the forest when she regained her mind. Losing herself in her mind was the closest thing that she could get to the ability to sleep. that was perhaps the reason why it happened so often to her. That and the fact that Emily hated it.

Shippo: Uh oh... A print like that means only one thing.

Matsuo (Various fanfictions): What's that, Cousin Shippo?

Shippo: Kouga's come to visit! ^^

Both 'sune: :hilarious: :hilarious:

:cutelaugh: Great Story Update, Ari. Please continue when you may.

Hmm... It may not be Kouga that was there, but it seems that what was supposed to be a myth and something not supposed to have been around since 2578 ...

It isn't a myth any more.. ^^
