Today, Japan officially embarks on joining the International Space Station with the launching of the main part of the Kibo laboratory on Space Shuttle Discovery. Liftoff time is 5:02 PM EDT, with a mission duration of 14 days.

Anybody want to give their thoughts?

Yep. Japan now will have the capability to carry out their own science experiments in the environment of Low Earth Orbit, and also the future permanent Japanese astronauts will now have their lab waiting for them when they arrive.

Shuttle Discovery's crew for STS-124:

Mark E. Kelly - Commander

This will be Mark Kelly's third fight, second as a commander. His previous missions:
STS-108 in December of 2001
STS-121 in June of 2005


Kenneth Ham - Pilot

STS-124 is Kenneth Ham's first spaceflght.


Karen L. Nyberg - Mission Specialist 1

The only woman on this flight, STS-124 is also Miss Nyberg's first spaceflight.


Ronald J. Garan, Jr. - Mission Specialist 2

STS-124 is Mr. Garan's first spaceflight.


Mike Fossum - Mission Specialist 3

STS-124 will be Mr. Fossum's second spaceflight, as he was one of Mark Kelly's crewmates during his first spaceflight on STS-121


Akihiko Hoshide - Mission Specialist 4

Representing the Japanese Space Agengcy of JAXA, Hoshide Akihiko is representing Japan on this flight and will be principally reponsible for the initial setting up of Kibo once it has been attached using the ISS Canadarm 2 robotic arm.
