Wolves and Foxes

Part 1

Crimson Gorge was soaked in the bloody rain that constantly fell. It dripped from the jagged black cliffs, only to land upon another point and continue rolling until it soaked into the dark Earth far below. The sky pounded thunder as lightning split the clouds with blinding flashes. This was the usual weather, although it was especially stormy and violent tonight.
The moon could hardly be seen behind the fierce storm clouds, no matter how bright it was. Casting an odd picture against the moon was the shape of a wolf. Her head was turned to the sky, red rain dripping down her grey fur. Wrapped about her muzzle, was rose vine, coated in sharp thorns that never seemed to come off. Set about her front right leg, was also rose vine, giving her a very slight limp. At the base of her tail, was even more of the sharp green rope. Placed so perfectly in her mane that flopped between her hairs and over her left eye, was a rose. A beautiful, extravagant red rose that shimmered even in this dark night.
The wolf stood proudly with her head thrust to the night sky. Her eyes were open, such eerie holes in her face. They glowed hideously, giving her a frightening appearance. She then laid herself down sadly, her tied muzzle resting on her front paws. She blinked sadly, staring out up to the moon upon the crooked mountain top. Her tail wrapped up closer to her chest for warmth, although nearly none came. The sky echoed with the solemn whimper of hers, though it did not surpass the scream of thunder…

Part 2.

The small brown fox pup danced along playfully, yipping in excitement. His wooden wings swayed slightly as he went, and the ivy around his paw flittered a bit. He barked to his female companion, a black and rusty pup with a cool grey stripe below her left eye. She wobbled over, being a bit fat at that. They circled each other, then growled affectionately and tackled, rolling down the hill playfully then slamming into the front paws of their caretaker. The hideous green wolf looked down at them, smiling through her stitches. Her body was sewn together and covered in misshapen patches, her lump of hair flopped over the side of her head, and her eyes were frightening and glowing as well. She laughed lightly to herself, and then flicked her head for them to follow. The two playful pups did so, running around in circles and dashing about with one another.
The three animals eventually arrived at a hollowed-out tree, then entered and sat down in the center, a dead rabbit waiting for each of them. They all sat down before their food and bowed heads, the green rag-doll creature saying grace.

“Bless our hearts as this food,
Thank you spirits for allowing us a healthy hunt,
May we never take without permission,
And always return what we borrow.”

Her voice was beautiful compared to her hideous appearance. The three animals then started to eat, each of them enjoying their meal. The brown one with wooden wings was Vulpeculae, who always wished to fly, such being the purpose for his wooden wings. The fat black one was Emsohl, always smiling and giggling about something. At last, Ciriquoi came into place, with her kind ways and forgiving manner, even though her past was not what you would expect.
Slowly, the male of their family came home from his outing. He entered, his tons of white, ragged fur slapped over him. His long tail weaved around to Ciriquoi, who cuddled into his neck, nuzzling him.
“I’m glad to see you home safe, Bandit,” the wolf-lady said happily. Bandit, her male mate, smiled and licked her face. “Always a pleasure to be home with the ones I love,” he cooed, just before Emsohl and Vulpeculae dived on him, tugging at his ears playfully and goofing around while Ciriquoi dragged out a rabbit for him and set it at his place. Bandit licked his mate’s cheek again and trotted over to his food, bowed his head, then started eating and enjoying his dinner. Emsohl and Vulpeculae bounced about, chasing small wooden balls around the room for fun and enjoying themselves before bedtime.
“Go to bed now cuties,” Ciriquoi said kindly, padding up the carved wooden stairs to the room of her children and cuddling them as they lay down on the soft carpet before the hot coals of a low fire. She licked them each goodnight then walked downstairs to her mate, sitting beside him and muttering, “Was that odd wolf out again today, did you see her on Crimson Gorge?”
“Yes,” Bandit replied urgently, his tone slightly rough. “I’m going to go check it out; I want you to stay here with the kids if anything goes wrong.” Ciriquoi tried to argue, but it was not her place and he was already out the door.
The same sad wolf from before was still in her place at the tip of Crimson Gorge, where she had been the recent night. She was sleeping though, her sorrowful muzzle resting between her paws. Bandit strode up behind her, then barked, “She-wolf, what do you think you’re doing here? You should know this region is dangerous.” The wolf got up and turned to him, her eyes the same as Ciriqoui’s; cold, glowing, and dangerous.
“This is my home,” a soft voice said inside Bandit’s head. “I have nowhere else to live but here.” Bandit knew the voice was hers, for she could not speak with the vine tied around her muzzle. “My name is Etraduth, Seeker of the Night.” Bandit stared at her coldly. “Call me Bandit,” he mumbled. “I come from the large Oak back in Underway Green.” He spoke of the forest with lush valleys and beautiful greenery. Etraduth stared at him longingly. “I’ve heard that place was just a fantasy land it was so extravagant. I suppose not now them hm?” An odd, hollow laugh echoed through Bandit’s skull as Etraduth’s muzzle formed a frightening grin of sorts. “So,” Etraduth said inside his head. “Do you come to me for a reason, or just to torment me with your questions?” Bandit growled back, “I come here to ask why you’re always prowling about in a shiftily, you’re scaring my children.” “Aww, poor babies,” Etraduth shook her head. “I’m sorry, but I’m usually just looking for someone to talk to, that’s all. I get so lonely up here, all alone.” Etraduth sighed through her bonds. “But you wouldn’t care much about that now would you?” Bandit was about to ask another question, but Etraduth had turned away from him, staring into the early moon. Seeing the time of the sky, Bandit barked slightly and jumped from rock to rock, descending the cliff and running back to his home.
“No one ever really did care much anyways,” Etraduth reminded herself. “I suppose it’s hard to care for such as wretched, misshapen failure as I…”
