Title: Possible Side Effects
Description: Respiritory Woes

GUEST-Control13 - April 4, 2007 08:52 PM (GMT)
I was implanted on 2/22/07 and switched on 3/12/07. For approximately the last three weeks, I have been stricken with a horrible bout of bronchitis or something like it. I have been on antibiotics, steroids to clear my lungs, and various sprays and inhalers to clear my nose, throat, and chest.
Still my sinuses and lungs are drenched with fluid and I feel extremely sick. I am sore from coughing so much for so long. I am beginning to suspect the implant and the pulses have some connection to my current problems. Both the study doctors for the implant and my GP say it is probably unrelated.
I saw a post in the member area where someone spoke of a horrible 3 week bout of bronchitis and continuing hoarseness. I am at the point where if the respiritory problems are not mostly cleared up by my next visit a week from now, I may ask the doctors to turn off the device and drop me from the study.
Does anyone have insight?

Welcome Control13

I think you have touched on an interesting issue. My husband is still suffering from that particular strain of bronchitis and is still coughing and hacking away after 2 months! He does NOT have VNS. Just a wicked strain this year, I guess.

Your body must adjust to the stimulation, but I suspect that it may be aggravating the situation. Stimulation can cause the vocal cords can produce excess phlem, (HowdyDave has this problem) If your gut feelings are telling you to turn it off just until you get over this bronchitis, maybe that is what you should do.

You also might want to consult an ENT (ear/nose/throat) doctor for a second opinion.
