MUSC Research Offers Hope for Those Resistant to Depression Treatmenthttp://www.drugnewswire.com/15267/The only thing that bothered me about this article was that I didn't see anything mentioned in the article about a comparison between people whose device was turned on versus those whose wasn't. Perhaps they didn't study that? I wonder why they didn't? It also didn't mention what percentage of the patients showed a response versus which percentage didn't.
I did like this quote, though:
| QUOTE |
| The study participants had a 50 percent improvement in their depressive symptoms at either three months or a year after being treated with VNS Therapy. Between 61 and 79 percent of patients sustained this response for 24 months. The durability of response was not attributable to alterations in other treatments. |
It's still promising for the people it DID work for though...the only reason why I question these things is because I would like to get one of these devices myself. However, I don't want to permanently implant something in my body if it's not going to work.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know if the VNS is going to work for you or not (or cause worse problems or not) until you try it.
Like Bernard said, you don't have any garantee that it will work. It does seem the worst of the worst it helps.

When I had my inplant , the drs were surprised my szs were controlled
from the 5th day on. They never saw that before (I was inplanted
with it on) I think the Drs are still surprised when it works well, because
they never know whats going to happen. Their are no guarentees and
they can't tell you why it worked in one patient and didn't in another.

My VNS is for TRD. I also started seeing improvement quickly. With depression though it was two steps forward, one step back. I'm so glad those days are behind me and I'm thankful to have a husband that stood by me and made sure I got the best help available.
