"How many doctors speak for drug companies? We don’t know for sure, but one recent study indicates that at least 25 percent of all doctors in the United States receive drug money for lecturing to physicians or for helping to market drugs in other ways."

Dr. Drug Rep

This article will OPEN your eyes. Detail men know exactly what they are doing. Marketing is BIG, BIG business. I wonder just how well Dr. Carlat sleeps.

The New York Times seems to be the only major news media source giving this issue any play. Here's a previous article they published on the same theme: Indictment of Doctor Tests Drug Marketing Rules

Thanks for that link Bernard. I'd like to see more of this kind of action. Hold the docotrs responsible for the claims as well as big pharma. I have no respect of any doctor who sells his soul to push any drug.

: clap2 : Ditto! : clap2 :

I wonder how many of the 100,000 plus needless deaths every year in the U.S. from prescription drugs are a result of Drs. like the ones mentioned in those articles.

Well I am not surprised to hear this. I have always suspected this about drug companies and doctors. It's all about money; and the rest doesn't matter. I am glad this article was put in. I used to work for some doctor's offices, and when the drug rep's came in with their samples; they would go and talk with the MD.'s behind closed doors. Who knows what they said to the MD.'s? They are just (some of them) giving drugs to patients for the money. And that's all. They are getting paid to push the drug of choice. I have seen much in 20+ years of nursing. Drug companies do withhold negative information about a drug, as they do not want the public to know about it. Doctors are giving certain drugs on a long term basis, when they are not indicated for it. It doesn't matter if they are doctors or not!! They should be following the instructions listed in the Physicians Desk Manuel (PD) and they ARE NOT!!! Patients; many of them are getting drugs not needed for them at all. They are addicted to the drugs; that is the bottom line. And the doctor addicted them to these drugs. Doctors have been sued for this in court. And cases have won. I know of patients that were withdrawing from Paxil, and it was so severe, that the drug company was called for a detox regime. That is just one example. I could go on and on. Patients need to know what is safe and what is not. Doctors that do this should be hung up. and severely punished. The problem is that is they are often protected from the law. And that is the truth. Anyway, I am glad this was written up publicly.
Sincerely,
Bonnie
