Wow...
"it seems goofy.....we like getting our pens..."
These doctors can afford to buy pens for office use...if they don't like to see Bic on the pens...why don't they have pens made up with their own names or the name of their medical practice?
As a typical person...I definitely feel I'm giving credibility to the name of anything I use or wear. So a doctor, certainly must know that every time a patient sees the name of a drug on a pen that a doctor uses to write a prescription or make notes on the chart...that patient must feel the doctor supports/believes in that product.
I see someone once a week at a meeting; she frequently talks about the wonderful food the drug reps bring for lunch at the medical office where she works. She never talks about the "educational topic" that was discussed.
It is so sad when the "common man" sees the blatant "sucking up" the drug companies do with medical people...and these medical people, people who are supposed to be wise and intelligent...just seem to say I love free stuff...give me more free stuff.
Oh well, at least this article seems to indicate someone is making a minimal attempt to make some change.

You would be surprised how many MH conferences I attend where the key note speakers/lunches/bags/etc are there due to the funding of pharmas. The agency I work with has not been involved with them because we have been afraid to "get into bed" with pharmas, but we are now looking into grants from pharmas to pay for our annual camp, speakers, etc as long as we don't have to endorse their products. I have to admit it would sure save us quite a few $$$ instead of paying it out of our general budget. After all, they have the BIG BUCK$ to go around!!!
I personally have more "green" grocery bags than I will ever use from these conferences, have a couple of umbrellas, coffee cups, etc... as long as a drug name is not on it, I will take it. Most of mine are sponsored by large Mental Health agencies who do alot of PR.
:D
