Title: Vagus Nerve Stimulation & Coagulation
Description: Blood Clots

:hiya:
I became familiar about a former member of the site, and she had issues with blood clots during VNS treatment and post removal-no prior history. There is also a current member whose sister has VNS and has also developed blood clots. I now am going thru a battery of tests for blood clots and I am post removal. With all this in mind, I began researching the correlation of vagus nerve stimulation and blood clots. The following links are what I have found.
Effects of Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Coagulability/Sept. 18, 1973AND
Effects of Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Coagulability/Jan. 1975These articles were published in some 30 years ago. The tests were ran on cats & dogs. VNS has also been tested on rats. If vagus nerve stimulation affects animals in this manner, there is the probability it can also affect humans.
I have been unable to locate any information on any studies done after these dates, or any studies conducted or sponsored by Cyberonics regarding this issue. I also have been unable to locate any FDA MAUDE reports regarding this issue. I am curious if there will ever be any more studies done regarding this.

Blood clots are listed as a side effect. Anita, was a memeber and Moderator for a while. But we never heard from her again after she developed the clood clotting problems. It was extremely life threatening for her, they were filtering her blood. My fear is she had sucombed to the clotting issues.

:D Hey Birdbomb...
You lost me on the blood clots are listed as a side effect. I understood it was a possibility with the surgery not the actual stimulation, so back to the manual I go.
I hope Anita has not passed away from her health problems.

:D HI!
Ok, I just read it in the adverse events...I go back to the date of being implanted and if I had been given the manual, I would have not been implanted. Geesh, I learn more & more every day. Thanks BB!
So, I still wonder when are there going to be more studies regarding blood clotting and all the other safety issues. The studies going on now are for parameter settings. Some studies are being cancelled due to not enough participants.

:D HI Labrat!
THANKS and it is all going to be ok in the end! That doesn't take away the being scared factor, but it helps keep me in check to continually remind myself it is going to be ok.

How are things going now, Dispatch?
Personally, I wish they'd do a study (or maybe 2) on side effects of VNS and VNS removal. Wonder what kinds of interesting results would show up? Maybe we could get the medical community, the public and the powers that be more interested and more involved. Or is that wishful thinking on my part?

I'm doing ok thanks for asking. I have more blood work done next month.
