Is there anyone who has vns and is feeling better who can not hear it going off and does not have noticeable voice changes?
Hi. I'm a VNs recipient myself and am helping a friend of mine. He is hoping to get his implant soon but is hoping to talk to a few people with the implant. He has spoken to several people who's VNS you can actually hear or who's voice is dramatically changed when it goes off. Do you have an implant yourself? Do you have any sound/voice difficulties?
{edited} I appreciate your consideration. Thanks, Yvonne

I've had the VNS since 2005 and don't feel anything or expierence any voice changes. All that happens while you are trying to get to the right setting.
My implant was done in May 2006. I don't hear anything when the generator is on, but my voice is changed significantly for the 30 second on time. It started with the first activation and continues to happen for 30 seconds every five minutes.
My voice gets "rough" and it is weak...if I had to yell for help during those 30 seconds I would not be able to do it (unless I use my magnet). Also, the symptoms increase with anxiety, stress, or when I'm walking or exercising.
During that same 30 seconds, my throat muscles spasm and sometimes I have shortness of breath. It's difficult and dangerous for me to swallow during that time.
That's it!
:D
My voice changed significantly while activating and I also had symptoms described above in Oreo's post. I never heard the generator activating and have never heard of that happening.
I read your post on Yahoo-if voice alteration is keeping your friend from being implanted, there are other treatment options he can research and talk over with his doctor. One is Neurofeedback, and there is also rTMS, Deep Brain Stimulation, meditation & relaxation techniques, counseling (individually and group thearpy), change of diet, exercise, and change in environment.
I think it is great you have been a voice for your friend. Please encourage him to become a Member on this board so we can give him some direct encouragement.
Take care!
